Why did we change our name and what does Adeso mean?
For many reasons Horn Relief no longer fit – we do more than relief, and we work outside of the Horn of Africa (e.g. South Sudan)
• We are African
• We seek long-term solutions
• Where possible, we prioritize development
• Adeso is not an acronym for African Development Solutions: we created a new word so that we would have something shorter, catchier, and more dynamic. An example of a made up word for an organization is Oxfam, and originally the full name was Oxford Famine……
• Adeso – flexibility, energy, enthusiasm, courage & creativity
• Adeso should never be written all in caps as it is not an acronym – ADESO is not correct but rather Adeso.
What does the logo mean?
We chose vibrant colors – it refers to our vitality and to the fertility of African landscapes. It should make people think about the land, the ocean, the sky.
The logo has three strands or ‘arrows’ – they represent different approaches and audiences, all coming together, a powerful image of unity. It shows that our work is holistic, comprehensive, multi-dimensional, multi-sectoral. For example we do work for the economy, for the environment, for women, for education – we work in more than one area. We work with different partners, with different beneficiaries, etc.
The shape of the arrows looks like the shape of the letter ‘A’ of Africa or Africans
The writing is simple: we want people to know we’re a strong, accessible organization that is paving the way for change.
Our new vision, mission and values – learn to put these into your own words
• Who we exist for/Who we work with: African communities who are yet to realize their full potential
• Our vision is an Africa that is not dependent on aid but on the resourcefulness and capabilities of its people
• Our mission: We work at the roots of African communities to create environments in which they can thrive
• What we do: We aim to prevent, manage, and overcome situations that adversely affect communities’ wellbeing by:
o Reinvigorating the economy (e.g. cash relief, cash for work, etc)
o Developing skills for life and work (trainings, providing tools, education, etc)
o Providing humanitarian aid (e.g. cash relief)
o Influencing policy (e.g. charcoal ban, women’s rights, etc)
• Our values:
o Efficiency – we do exactly what’s needed, where it’s needed
o Humility – an understanding that we don’t have all the answers and that listening is sometimes better than talking
o Collaboration — working with communities to co-create solutions
o Interconnection— recognizing that our work is only as effective as the relationships we build
o Conviction – doing and saying what’s needed, not what’s expected

Translation - Arabic إرشادات لطاقم العمل بخصوص إعادة التسمية
لماذا غيرنا اسمنا وماذا تعنى "أديسو"؟
لم يعد يصلح اسم "هورن ريليف" (إعانة القرن) لعدة أسباب؛ فنحن نقدم ما هو أكثر من مجرد الإعانة، ويتعدى نطاق عملنا القرن الإفريقى (جنوب السودان على سبيل المثال)
• نحن أفارقة
• نبحث عن حلول طويلة المدى
• إن أمكن، نعطى الأولوية للتنمية
• لا تعتبر "أديسو" اختصاراً لعبارة "حلول التنمية الإفريقية"؛ فقد ابتكرنا كلمة جديدة حتى نحصل على مصطلح أقصر يلفت الأنظار ويتمتع بحيوية، ومن الأمثلة على الكلمات المبتكرة للمنظمات هناك "أوكسفام" التى يعود أصلها إلى "أوكسفورد فامين".
• "أديسو": بها مرونة، وطاقة، وحماس، وشجاعة، وإبداع.
• يجب ألا تُكتب "أديسو" مطلقاً بالحروف الإنجليزية الكبيرة لأنها ليست اختصاراً، وإنما تُكتب ككلمة عادية.
ما دلالة الشعار؟
اخترنا ألواناً زاهية تُعبر عن همتنا وعن خصوبة المناظر الطبيعية الإفريقية، فعند رؤيته يجب أن يفكر الناس فى الأرض والمحيط والسماء.
يحوى الشعار ثلاثة خيوط او "سهام" تمثل أساليب وأفراد مختلفين، يتلاقون جميعاً معاً، فى صورة تلاحم مؤثرة؛ إنها تجعل ما نقوم به يبدو كامل الجوانب، و شاملاً، و متعدد الأبعاد والقطاعات؛ على سبيل المثال، نحن نعمل فى مجالات الاقتصاد والبيئة ومشاكل المرأة والتعليم وذلك فى أكثر من منطقة، كما نعمل مع شركاء ومنتفعين مختلفين...إلخ.
يضاهى شكل السهام شكل حرف (A)فى كلمتى (Africa) أو (Africans).
إسلوب الكتابة بسيط إذ نريد أن يعلم الناس أننا منظمة قوية فى متناولهم تمهد الطريق للتغيير.
رؤيتنا ومهمتنا وقيمنا الجديدة. تعلم أن تصيغ هذا بإسلوبك الخاص.
من نحن موجودون لأجلهم/ من نعمل معهم: المجتمعات الأفريقية التى لم تبلغ كامل قدراتها بعد.
رؤيتنا: خلق إفريقيا لا تعتمد على المساعدات وإنما تعتمد على وفرة خيراتها وقدرات شعوبها.
مهمتنا: نبدأ عملنا من جذور المجتمعات الإفريقية لخلق الظروف التى سوف تزدهر بها.
ماذا نفعل: نهدف إلى منع وإدراة والتغلب على المواقف التى تؤثر سلباً على سلامة المجتمعات من خلال:
o إعادة إنعاش الاقتصاد ( مثال: المساعدات النقدية، المال مقابل العمل...إلخ)
o تنمية المهارات الحيايتة والعملية (مثال: التدريب، إتاحة الأدوات، التعليم...إلخ)
o تقديم المساعدات الإنسانية (مثال: الإعانات النقدية)
o التأثير على السياسات (مثال: حظر استخدام الفحم، حقوق المرأة...إلخ)
قيمنا:
o الكفاءة: نؤدى المطلوب فى المكان المحدد.
o التواضع: نتقبل حقيقة أننا ليس لدينا كل الحلول، وأحياناً يكون الاستماع أفضل من الكلام.
o التعاون: العمل مع المجتمعات للتعاون فى خلق حلول.
o الاتصالات المتبادلة: نعرف أن كفاءة عملنا تقاس بكفاءة العلاقات التى نبنيها.
o الاعتقاد: عمل وقول ما هو مطلوب وليس ما هو متوقع.
