Source text - English The woodchuck came bumbling along the shoulder of Route 119, headed in the direction of Chester’s Mill, although
the town was still a mile and a half away and even Jim Rennie’s Used Cars was only a series of twinkling sunflashes
arranged in rows at the place where the highway curved to the left. The chuck planned (so far as a woodchuck can be
said to plan anything) to head back into the woods long before he got that far. But for now, the shoulder was fine.
He’d come farther from his burrow than he meant to, but the sun had been warm on his back and the smells were
crisp in his nose, forming rudimentary images—not quite pictures—in his brain.
He stopped and rose on his back paws for an instant. His eyes weren’t as good as they used to be, but good enough to
make out a human up there, walking in his direction on the other shoulder. The chuck decided he’d go a little farther
anyway. Humans sometimes left behind good things to eat.
He was an old fellow, and a fat fellow. He had raided many garbage cans in his time, and knew the way to the Chester’s
Mill landfill as well as he knew the three tunnels of his own burrow; always good things to eat at the landfill. He
waddled a complacent old fellow’s waddle, watching the human walking on the other side of the road.
The man stopped. The chuck realized he had been spotted. To his right and just ahead was a fallen birch. He would
hide under there, wait for the man to go by, then investigate for any tasty— The chuck got that far in his thoughts—
and another three waddling steps—although he had been cut in two. Then he fell apart on the edge of the road. Blood
squirted and pumped; guts tumbled into the dirt; his rear legs kicked rapidly twice, then stopped.
His last thought before the darkness that comes to us all, chucks and humans alike: What happened?
All the needles on the control panel dropped dead. “What the hell?” Claudie Sanders said. She turned to Chuck. Her
eyes were wide, but there was no panic in them, only bewilderment. There was no time for panic. Chuck never saw
the control panel. He saw the Seneca’s nose crumple toward him. Then he saw both propellers disintegrate. There was
no time to see more. No time for anything. The Seneca exploded over Route 119 and rained fire on the countryside. It
also rained body parts. A smoking forearm—Claudette’s—landed with a thump beside the neatly divided woodchuck.
It was October twenty-first.
Translation - Persian (Farsi) موش خرمایی در حالی که وزوز می کرد از شانه ی مسیر 119 می گذرد. در راه او به آسیاب چستر رسید، هرچند که هنوز هم یک مایل و نیم از شهر فاصله داشت و حتی ماشین استفاده شده توسط جیم رنی هم تنها تعدادی چراغ های چشمک زن است که توسط نور خورشید کار می کند و در مکانی که جاده به سمت چپ می پیچید به ردیف قرار گرفته اند. موش خرمایی تصمیم گرفت( از زمانی که بتوان گفت موش خرمایی بتواند تصمیمی بگیرد) قبل از این که خیلی دور شود به جنگل بازگردد. اما اکنون شرایط مسیر خوب است. او می تواند بیشتر از انچه تصمیم داشت از لانه اش دور شود، اما خورید از پشت سر به او میتابید و بوی سیب زمینی سرخ شده در بینی او پیچیده بود، این بو یک تصویر ابتدایی و نه یک تصویر کامل در ذهن او به وجود اورده بود.
موش خرمایی روی پنجه های پایش برای لحظه ای ایستاد. چشمانش به خوبی گذشته نبود اما به اندازه یک انسان میدید. او راهش را در یک مسیر دیگر ادامه داد. موش خرمایی تصمیم گرفت کمی دور تر برود. انسان ها گاهی اوقات چیز های خوبی برای خوردن به او می دادند.
او یک موش خرمایی پیر و چاق بود. او در زمان خودش سطل اشغال های زیادی را خراب کرده بود و مسیر رفتن به محل دفن زباله جستر میل را به خوبی سه تونلی که برای رفتن به لانه اش از ان ها استفاده می کرد بلد بود; همیشه چیز های خوبی برای خوردن در دفن زباله جستر میل وجود داشت. او همانند یک موش خرمایی پیر از خود راضی راه می رفت و انسان هایی که در طرف دیگر مسیر راه می رفتند را نگاه می کرد.
یکی از انسان ها ایستاد. موش خرمایی فهمید که دیده شده. سمت راستش یکم جلوتر یه سوارخ در یک درخت غان(نوعی درخت) بود. او می توانست تا زمانی که ان انسان برود زیر اون پنهان شود، سپس به دنبال غذا بگردد. موش خرمایی تا اونجایی که فکر می کرد به سمت اون درخت رفت سپس سه قدم به گونه ای از خود راضی برداشت. هرچند که در دومین قدم کار او تمام شد. سپس روی لبه مسیر روی زمین افتاد. خون در همه جا پاشیده شد. دل و روده او روی زمین افتاد; پای عقب او دو بار پرتاب شد و سپس به زمین افتاد.
اخرین فکر و اندیشه او قبل از مرگ ،که به سراغ همه ما می اید، این بود که موش خرمایی ها و انسان ها مثل هم هستند: چه اتفاقی افتاد؟
تمامی سوزن ها در جعبه سوزن از بین رفتنند.چه اتفاقی افتاده؟ کلودیو سندرز گفت. او به سمت موش خرمایی بازگشت. چشمان او کاملا باز بود. اما هیچ ترسی در ان نبود. او فقط گیج و سردرگم بود. هیچ فرصتی برای ترس وجود نداشت. موش خرمایی هیچ گاه جعبه سوزن را ندید. او بینی سرخپوست سنکا را دید که اطراف او است. سپس او دید که هر دو ملخ متلاشی شدند. زمانی برای بیشتر دیدن نبود. زمان برای هیچ چیز دیگر باقی نمانده بود. سنکا انفجاری در مسیر 119 ایجاد کرد و در منطقه سحرایی اتشی به پا کرد. او همچنین قسمت های بدن را هم سوزاند. دود -در کلودت- به صورتی منظم در اطراف بدن تکه تکه شده موش خرمایی به وجود امد. این واقعه در 21 اکتبر اتفاق افتاد.
