Source text - Czech Chtěla jsem tu psát, ale vítr, který se náhle zvednul, žene písečná zrna tak nízko při zemi, mám je už všude, mezi prsty, ve vlasech, v nose, skřípou v mých zubech, štípou mne do prsou, mezírkou v pravém oku sleduji jejich pohyb - tanec plavých korálků kolem slona v porcelánu, který zanechává úhledné modré stopy za svou jedinou a zároveň jedinečnou nohou, vítr mi zvučí membránami sluchových vjemů a já myslím na jedno a to samé - hledání inspirace je nekonečný proces, nebezpečný jako život sám, jako životy ostatních, jako život nás všech ... i ono je vždy ohroženo vidinou nedostatku, zřejmými konci a začátky v nedohlednu, stejně tak jako je povzbuzováno a současně napadáno modrými či jakýmikoliv jinými lehátky, hotely, restauracemi a více či méně ogrilovanými krevetami.
Také na ni myslívám, dokonce stále víc a víc se za ní ženu jako žena zbavená smyslů, jako nenaplněná studna v Libyjské poušti, jako nedokončený obraz, prahnu po dokončení, ale nikdy nechci viset na prodej v té přecpané galerii na Korčule, kde jsem viděla skvosty souložit s kýči v jednom velkém nepřehledném gruppen-sexu, barvy křičely svázány neforemnými těly a krásná těla naopak zmírala bledostí či se v hnilobě rozkládala a páchla oleji, které byly vyrobené ze zbytků makrel na tom stejném běžícím páse, na kterém kdysi běhali svalnatí muži v bílém a mladí hošíci ve snaze získat nabobtnalé svalstvo k omráčení slečen s nabobtnalým poprsím. Tyto pásy v rámci celosvětové recyklace fitness center, když ztratí svou ohebnost a pružnost, jsou transportovány do chudých přímořských oblastí starými ruskými dobytčáky ( též po recyklovatelné rekonstrukci ) a zde jsou následně použity jako součást strojů v rybích kombinátech, kde ovšem nezpracovávají ryby čerstvé tak jako dříve, ale zbytky ryb z restaurací, Fish-Donaldů a mrtvoly z rybích zápasů, které jsou teď více v módě než zápasy psů, kohoutů, štírů a lidí. Dají se totiž sledovat přímo pod vodou, v potápěčské výstroji v oblastech s nádhernými korálovými útesy nebo naopak na velmi odlehlých místech oceánu a není většího požitku pro milovníky těchto her, než být přímo v ohnisku kupříkladu kosatčí exploze (platí se velké částky za možnost být přímo v ochranné kleci v blízkosti dravců, kde dříve či později vytryskne krev jako rudá dýmovnice a tito lidé se jí mohou opájet dosytosti a čím méně vidí krze sklo potápěčských brýlí, tím lépe vnímají chuť krve na jazyku).
Ano, jak tak o tom neustále přemýšlím, chtěla bych být velmi bohatá - no dejme tomu - paní (pro začátek). Chtěla bych nashromáždit neskutečně velké bohatství, jak jinak než psaním a sice psaním s láskou v její nejčistší podobě, a pak ... pak bych koupila Krétu i s místním obyvatelstvem, pokud by to samo chtělo (už teď jsou to převážně sloužící, ovšem té konzumní části světa, která se skládá z neuvěřitelného množství klientů cestovních kanceláří a zákazníků
kýče). U mě by ona hrstka těch pravých potomků Kréťanů (jsou-li vůbec jací) sloužila inspiraci. Prohlásili by mne královnou. Za nahromaděné zlato bych pro ně znovu postavila město a palác Knóssos v celé své bývalé kráse a všichni ti sochaři, architekti, kameníci a dlaždiči, rytci, malíři, zedníci a instalatéři by byli mou inspirací tak, jako by mé básně inspirovaly je. Jak by postupovaly opravy jednotlivých místností a domů kdysi zaniklého království, tak by se rozrůstala komunita duševní slasti pramenící z inspirace. A nebyla by to utopie sexu, protože by to byla realita financovaná mou maličkostí.
Teď už jen zbývá získat tu prvopočáteční hromadu zlatých mincí. Jelikož ten, kdo na začátku stvořil tento svět, Vás a také mne, musel mít zcela určitě k dispozici obrovský poklad. A nebyl-li to poklad zlatý, pak to musela být jedině láska. Sama pramatka inspirace. Jakési osobní věno. Protože jedině láska (nebo v současnosti peníze či kombinace obojího) dokáže i hory přenášet. (Potřeba přežít je láska k člověku a k sobě samému a nenávist jako sestra lásky zase nedokáže konstruktivně stavět, namísto toho rozbíjí a ničí, a pakliže přece jen kdosi z nenávisti něco tvoří, tak je to z nenávisti k jiným, ale pro lásku k sobě samému či skupině.)
Tedy to věno.
Leží mi na srdci jako zlatý kámen, který nelze vydolovat. Mám pocit, že by mělo být těženo, neboť vše, co má dnes nějakou cenu, se těží. Myslím si, že mám cenu. A přesto se stále těží uhlí, těží se ropa, kamení a drahokamy, těží se na Urale, v Texasu, v Severním moři, děti těží ze svých rodičů a rodiče těží z dětí, cizí lidé těží z cizích dětí a muži těží z dospělých žen a mladistvých dívek a ženy těží z něžných chlapců a bohatých starců a zároveň ze svých vlastních mužů, zatímco jiné ženy, bývalé manželky, těží z bývalých manželů obtěžkány dalšími dětmi, které budou jednou také něco nebo z někoho těžit, protože jinak někdo vytěží je.
I já tu teď ležím na rozpláclé hromadě ještě nevytěženého písku a těžím.
Těžím "ji" odkud se dá. Nechci už promarnit ani chvíli. Bez výtěžku, který mě dosud netíží v kapse, aby mě následně zbavil tíže v srdci, nemohu "slušně" žít. Nemohu při své soutěživé povaze proplout a opustit zemskou tíži s klidným a svěžím svědomím. Jestliže se nezbavím pokladu, který nosím v srdci, neodvážu se. Snad bych mohla vinou nenávisti explodovat jako superNova, avšak ani tehdy nebude má duše dočista do čista.
Translation - English I wanted to write, but all of a sudden the wind rose and began chasing countless grains of sand across the ground, and I am now covered in them: they got between my fingers, into my hair, up my nose, they are crushed between my teeth, sting my breasts, and through the corner of my right eye I am watching them fly - fair beads of coral dancing round a bull in a china shop whose one and only foot will leave no neat blue imprints, the wind is resonating around the membranes of my inner ear and I am suddenly struck by the usual thought, searching for inspiration is a never-ending process, dangerous as life itself, as the lives of others, as the lives of all of us... even "it" is always menaced by a vision of shortcomings, the obvious ends and beginnings of infinity, in the same way as it is encouraged even as it is being threatened by blue beach loungers or deck chairs of any old colour, by hotels, restaurants and by langoustines which have been grilled any which way.
My vision of her seems more and more as if I were chasing her like a demented woman, like an unfulfilled oasis in the middle of the Libyan desert, like an unfinished painting I long for being completed but I never ever want to hang up for sale in that overstuffed gallery in Korčula, where I saw works of art copulating with kitsch in one enormously ambivalent group-sex romp, where thin colours shouted and were bound by shapeless bodies while on the other hand beautiful bodies expired beyond the pale or putrefied in rot, reeking of oils made from left-over mackerels on a conveyor belt reminiscent of one of those fitness-centre tread mills on which young men in white once used to jog and which are now the domain of young lads eager to develop outsize muscles with which to dazzle big-busted young beauties. In the name of world recycling, once these conveyors have lost their elasticity and flexibility, they are transported to less attractive and less affluent beach resorts in Russian cattle wagons (which have likewise undergone recycling and reconstruction) where they are subsequently used as machine parts in fish-processing plants, where however they do not process fresh fish as was once the case but leftovers garnered from restaurants, Fish-Donalds, along with those fish that die in fish fights, events which have now become far more fashionable than dog fights, cock fights, scorpion fights or even human contests. What is more, one can follow these battles under water wearing wetsuits and using snorkels among beautiful coral reefs or in the furthest-flung parts of the ocean and there is nothing more thrilling for lovers of these games than being right there in the explosive epicentre (and paying good money to be in a protective cage among the predators, waiting for the moment when blood spurts out like a red flare so they can savour the spectacle to the full even though the less they see through their goggles the better they perceive the taste of blood on their tongues).
Yes, and as I am constantly thinking about it, I would love to be a very rich - yes let it be - lady (to begin with). I would like to gather about me incredible wealth, through my writing of course, and what is more, through writing, writing with love in its purest form, and then... then I would buy Crete, along with her inhabitants, if they so wished (nowadays most of them do little more than serve consumerism, which means fawning on an unbelievably large percentage of travel agencies' clients and customers of kitsch). For me, the handful of genuine descendants of the Minoans (should such still exist) would serve as inspiration. They would proclaim me their queen. From my collective wealth in gold I would rebuild their city and the palace of Knossos in all its former glory and all the sculptors, architects, stonemasons and tilers, engravers, painters, bricklayers and plumbers would serve as my inspiration, just as my poetry would inspire them. As they restored the individual rooms and houses of this defunct kingdom, so would the community of psychic delight, flowing from this inspiration, grow. And it would not be a Utopia of Sex but, rather, a reality financed by "yours truly".
So now all that remains is to acquire that initial pile of gold coins. He, who at the outset created this world, you, as well as me, must have also had enormous treasure at His disposal. And if this did not consist of gold then it must have been of love. Love, the alma mater of inspiration. Some kind of personal dowry.
Because only love or nowadays money (or a combination of both) can move mountains. (The need to survive is the love of man and of oneself on the same way, just as hate is love's sister and incapable of building constructively but only breaking up and destroying, and should anyone ever build something out of hatred alone, it would be out of hatred for others, but for the love of oneself or of a group.)
Now to the dowry itself.
It weighs on my heart like a golden stone, impossible to extract. I have the feeling that it should be dug up, because today everything of value is exploited. Coal, crude oil, marble and precious stones are extracted every day, their exploitation goes on in the Urals, in Texas, in the North Sea, children exploit their parents, just as parents exploit their children, strange people exploit strange children and men exploit adult women or adolescent girls and in turn women exploit their toyboys or sugar-daddies and at the same time exploit their own husbands whilst other women, ex-wives, exploit their ex-husbands, burdened with their new children who will one day also exploit something or someone otherwise someone else will exploit them.
And even as I lie here under this flattened pile of unexploited sand I am eager to exploit. I am exploiting "her" wherever possible. I don't want to waste another moment. Without this treasure, which as yet is not weighing too heavily in my pocket and which will subsequently relieve the heaviness in my heart, I cannot "honestly" live. I cannot, due to my competitive nature, sail away and release the earth from its gravity with a clear conscience. If I cannot be rid of the treasure I cherish in my heart, I will not loosen up. I could, due to the machinations of hatred, explode like a superNova, but even then my soul would never be whiter than white.

Belarus bookshop braves the state to publish Nobel winner's work
Underground publisher says it is risking regulations to translate Svetlana Alexievich’s novels into her home language
Before a group of Belarusian artists and intellectuals chose it as their headquarters, Minsk drinkers would line up outside the run-down building for cheap vodka on tap.
These days the Lohvinau House of Literature is one of the city’s few outlets for local contemporary art. It houses a gallery, a wine bar and a bookshop, and is dedicated to publishing works by authors marginalised by state-run media houses.
One of these is Svetlana Alexievich, the recipient of this year’s Nobel prize for literature. Despite being Belarusian, Alexievich’s books are hard to find in her home country because of her criticism of the authoritarian president, Aleksander Lukashenko.
For the past 15 years, Lohvinau has been the only publisher to print Alexievich’s books in Belarusian, says owner Ihar Lohvinau.
The cultural hub was founded in 2009 as a physical expansion of the publishing house. It has an atmosphere that evokes the salon culture of the communist era, when dissident artists would hold covert expositions for culture-starved intellectuals, including Alexievich herself.
“The concept is to create a platform, especially for young artists, and to organise lectures and debates,” Lohvinau says.
The 500 or so titles arranged on the book shop shelves are a mix of fiction, poetry, art magazines and academic journals. Some works have been smuggled in from abroad or produced by sympathetic local printers. They are distributed through personal networks, passed on tothe offices of opposition political parties and private enthusiasts who sell them from home.
The government does not carry out overt censorship, says bookstore manager Pavol Kastiukevich, but rather relies on bureaucracy and red tape to control the dissemination of controversial literature.
In 2014, a law requiring publishers to obtain a government license for each new title caught Lohvinau by surprise. The publisher continued to print illegally, earning a €60,000 fine. Faced with closure the owners organised a successful online campaign to save the bookshop from financial ruin.
Competing in the state-run system has other obstacles. Printing licenses are state-controlled, and state-run bookshops enjoy special conditions– they don’t pay rent.
State institutions often dictate to the sellers what should be displayed on bookshelves by placing all publications into two categories: “socially significant” and “others”, says Kastiukevich.
The state-owned book trade monopoly Bielkniha (Belarusan book) may forbid the sales of selected titles on “ideological” grounds.
Russian-language books make up about 95% of the market. “Belarus-produced books have no chance, as they’re more expensive and less numerous,” says Kastiukevich.
The situation for independent publishers and booksellers is aggravated by high VAT rates of 20%.
Two years ago, Lohvinau printed 500 copies of Alexievich’s latest novel, Second-hand Time, translated into Belarusian by Valer Stralko and Cichan Carniakievič. Despite the modest print run, her books have not been as popular as expected, Kastiukevich says.
Part of the reason is that Alexievich writes in Russian, which alienates her from a generation of Minsk intellectuals dedicated to resuscitating the Belarusian language.
“Some people are still arrogant towards Russian language itself as being part of ‘Russian world’ and the main means of Putin’s propaganda in the former USSR,” says Kastiukevich.
But for younger readers, publishing Alexevich’s books in Belarusian is symbolically important in a country still trying to overcome national amnesia caused by the centuries of suppression, says bookshop patron Iryna Vidanava, the publisher of an independent Minsk-based cultural magazine and an expert on Belarusian history.
“To me she is like conscience, making you to think about hard issues which you would probably rather forget or ignore. Whether she writes about the war, Chernobyl or Soviet past, a simple human being is in the centre of her books and the difficult dilemmas about good and evil each of us faces.”

Běloruské knihkupectví se postavilo proti státu v otázce publikování práce držitelky Nobelovy ceny
Undergroundové nakladatelství říká, že vzhledem k panujícím podmínkám riskuje při překládání novel Světlany Alexijevičové do její mateřštiny
Před tím, než si skupina běloruských umělců a intelektuálů vybrala tohle místo za svůj hlavní stan, postávali před zchátralým domem minští opilci ve frontě na stáčenou vodku.
Dnes je Dům literatury Lohvinau jedno z mála prodejních míst ve městě, kde najdete zdejší současné umění. Je zde galerie, vinotéka a knihkupectví, které se věnuje publikování prací autorů přehlížených státními vydavatelstvími.
Mezi ně patří Světlana Alexijevičová, nositelka letošní Nobelovy ceny za literaturu. Přestože je Běloruska, její knihy najdete v její rodné zemi jen stěží, jelikož je kritičkou autoritativního režimu prezidenta Alexandra Lukašenka.
Za posledních 15 let bylo nakladatelství Lohvinau jediné, které vydalo knihy Alexijevičové v běloruštině, říká jeho majitel, Ihar Lohvinau.
Kulturní centrum bylo založeno v roce 2009 jako rozšíření již existujícího vydavatelství. Panuje zde atmosféra, která evokuje salónovou kulturu komunistické éry, kde umělci-disidenti organizují utajené výstavy pro intelektuály prahnoucí po kultuře, mezi něž Alexijevičová patří.
„Záměrem je vytvoření platformy, speciálně pro mladé umělce, a organizace přednášek a debat,“ sděluje Lohvinau.
V regálech obchodu je vystaveno asi 500 titulů, směs beletrie, poezie, uměleckých a akademických časopisů. Některé práce sem byly propašovány ze zahraničí nebo je vytiskli místní spříznění tiskaři. Jsou distribuovány osobně, přes kanceláře opozičních politických stran a šíří je i jednotliví nadšenci, kteří je prodávají z domova.
„Vláda neprovádí zjevnou cenzuru,“ říká Pavol Kasťjukevič, manažer knihkupectví, „ale pro kontrolu šíření kontroverzní literatury se spíše spoléhá na byrokracii a tzv. index.
Zákon z roku 2014, který vyžaduje, aby vydavatelé získali státní licenci pro vydání každého nového titulu, byl pro nakladatele, pana Lohvinaua, překvapením. Vydavatelství, které tiskne ilegálně, dostane pokutu €20.000. Tváří v tvář hrozbě uzavření podniku majitelé zorganizovali úspěšnou on-line kampaň na záchranu knihkupectví před finančním krachem.
Konkurence na trhu v systému nastaveném státem má však další překážky. Tisk licencí stát kontroluje a státem provozovaná knihkupectví využívají speciální výhody – neplatí nájemné.
Státní instituce často diktují obchodníkům, co by mělo být vystaveno na pultech. „Publikace jsou rozdělovány na dvě kategorie: ‚společensky významné‘ a ‚ostatní‘,“ upřesňuje Kasťjukevič.
Státem vlastněný monopolní knižní trh Bielkniha (Běloruská kniha) může zakázat prodej vybraných titulů z ‚ideologických‘ důvodů.
Ruskojazyčné knihy tvoří na trhu 95 % produkce. „Knihy z Běloruska nemají šanci, protože jsou mnohem dražší a v menším vydání,“ vysvětluje Kasťjukevič.
Situace nezávislých vydavatelů a prodejců knih je dále ztížena vysokou DPH, která činí 20%.
Před dvěma lety vydal Lohvinau 500 kopií nejnovějšího románu Alexijevičové – Doba z druhé ruky – který do běloruštiny přeložili Valer Stralko a Cichan Carniakievič. „I když kniha vyšla ve skromném nákladu, nebyla tak populární, jak se čekalo,“ vzpomíná Kasťjukevič.
Problém je částečně v tom, že Alexijevičová píše rusky, což ji odcizuje od generace minských intelektuálů, kteří se věnují záchraně běloruského jazyka.
„Někteří lidé jsou stále pohrdaví vůči ruštině, protože byla součástí tzv. ‚ruského světa‘ a hlavních myšlenek Putinovy propagandy v bývalém SSSR,“ říká Kasťjukevič.
„Ale je symbolicky významné vydávat knihy Alexijevičové pro mladou generaci čtenářů v Bělorusku, v zemi, která se stále snaží překonat národní amnézii zapříčiněnou stoletími represí,“ říká patronka knihkupectví, Iryna Vidanava, vydavatelka převážně minského kulturního časopisu a expertka na běloruskou historii.
„Ona je pro mě jako svědomí, které vás donutí přemýšlet o závažných otázkách, na které byste raději zapomněli nebo je ignorovali. Ať už píše o válce, o Černobylu nebo o sovětské minulosti, prostá lidská bytost je v jejích knihách centrem pozornosti a zrcadlí nám těžká dilemata o dobru a zlu, kterým čelí každý z nás.“

Autor knihy pochází z USA a je nadšeným milovníkem a sběratelem vín. Před více než 20 lety došel k závěru, že je nezbytně nutné vyřešit správné uskladnění své kolekce. Začal navrhovat a stavět vinný sklep ve svém domě v Massachusetts. Avšak již během prvního pokusu zjistil, že celá záležitost nebude tak snadná jak si myslel…Celý proces mu nakonec trval více než sedm let a stál ho mnoho těžké práce a úsilí. Svůj sen nakonec zdárně dokončil a výsledkem je nejen špičkový vinný sklep, ale i tato publikace.
