Translation - English The Landscape of Balinese Women
By Oka Rusmini
As a full time worker and a mother, writing a novel is a complicated yet pricey thing to do. Writing needs special times to contemplate, to collect the ideas that come up and keep it then cultivate it until it’s developed. However, I don’t have much time to do so. I face similar problem that women use to quit writing once they got married and raising kids. I have to make times for domestic tasks, office, social life etc. The daily chores that so boring but I have to commit to though it consumes my creative time.
By fortunate chance, those consuming activities turn out to be font of knowledge and cleanse my body and mind. It becomes the spirit of my creative process as a woman. Perhaps, those pains in the neck engaged with the process of marriage, being pregnant and giving birth: major events that only experienced by women.
The Novel Tempurung, is a result of my long contemplation. It is a reflection of Balinese women’s life: the desire and love, the conflict and its pain. It also the response to many social cases and issues which really breaking my heart as a woman that is a time when world starts abandon its own generation. Tempurung is a novel about life of women deal with their body, religion, custom and society. It portrays women who lives in an absurd marriage. Deep down in their heart, they don’t want marriage, however they need children, love, care, and touch for their body. Women, who searching for love, dream, in the contrary they don’t know what they want and what they wishing for and sometimes they don’t even dare to dream. This is a novel about women’s body which they don’t belong. They often forget of having it. The body that sometimes they don’t understand. The body that is so firmly attached yet so unfamiliar. This is the story of a woman who confuse of being a woman; it is either a gift or curse. It looks like they spin a top a coconut shell: the ‘sin’ they have made, the search of the meaning of life, but it is only bring despair, unfortunate, and dissatisfaction to their life. Sin that relays like a baton to another women. They must savor it, face it: sex, pregnant, giving birth, pain, and naivety, all mixed and implanted to their body.
Being a Journalist in Bali allow me to express many problems in the society in Bali in details. The ups and downs of Balinese society are portrayed in my books.
The character of Indonesia is its culture where its people grow and develop. My novel, poetry, and short stories, trying to record those problems and someday in the future it might become a cultural documentary to the future generation of Indonesia.
