English to Chinese: Part of a consent form for a bilingualism research General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Linguistics | |
Source text - English We ask you and your child to participate in a research project that focuses on bilingualism. This consent form explains the goals of the study, the procedures, advantages, risks and inconvenience, and provides the contact details of people to contact should the need arise. The form might contain words that are unfamiliar to you. We invite you to ask any questions that you may have.
INTRODUCTION
Many children in Quebec who are schooled in French speak a different language in their home. Becoming bilingual as a child has many advantages, but can also be challenging at times, as children transition into a new language and continue to speak different languages in different contexts, such as home and school. The goal of this study is to better understand the long term outcomes of bilingualism for children and their families. You are invited to participate in this study because you and your child participated in a previous study that we conducted when your child was a preschooler or enrolled in grade 1 or 3. The data collected in this study will be combined with your child’s data collected in the previous study to permit an analysis of language learning over time and the factors that influence it.
The findings of this study will help us understand whether test results and/or background variables predict long term success in the learning of French and school success in a French school. They will also help us understand which aspects of the bilingual experience are relatively more easy or more difficult, and they will help us understand this experience from the point of view of the people who are living it – you and your child. The findings will help us better understand the advantages and disadvantages that may be associated with childhood bilingualism and will contribute to improving the educational experiences of bilingual children.

Source text - English Keeping in line with the unfaltering vision of its late namesake, the Sarah Burton-helmed incarnation of the Alexander McQueen label furthers a diaristic approach to design that is both impenetrable and alluring. Preserving the element of spectacle that is a mainstay of the label’s modus operandi, McQueen translate temporal and geographical specificity into stately womenswear, with regal accents striking a balance against delicate reinterpretations of the label’s recognizable morbid signifiers.
Fashion collective Youths in Balaclava boldly reject the staid and sanitized cultural images often projected by their native Singapore in order to create clothing that champions liberated expression. Originally founded by a small group of high-school friends, Youths in Balaclava has since expanded into an expansive roster of creators all united by a mutual passion for punk aesthetics and Do-It-Yourself design.
