Just like the left and right ventricles, there is also a “wall” between the left and right atria, which is referred to as the “atrial septum.” If one or many holes are present on its surface, it is called “atrial septal defect,” the incidence of which is second to ventricle septal deficit. This condition is formed by an atrial septal defect that remains unclosed after embryonic development.
During infancy, the symptoms of patients with atrial septal defects are relative to the size of the defects. Clinical manifestations are not obvious in mild cases and are usually diagnosed when heart murmurs are detected during physical examinations. For large defects, growth and development are influenced owing to a large amount of shunting, notable pulmonary congestion, susceptibility to bronchopneumonia, in addition to insufficient systemic circulation. During instances of crying, holding one’s breath, pneumonia, or heart failure, pressure in the right atrium may exceed that of the left atrium, causing the occurrence of a temporary right-to-left shunt and the incidence of cyanosis. As a patient grows older, it can manifest as incidences of developmental delays, reduced endurance, recurrent respiratory infections, excessive sweating, heart failure, atrial arrhythmia.
The majority of patients with atrial septal defects present no clear symptoms, early physical examinations are an important means of discovering atrial septal defects.

As an interpreter, I have been qualified as a per diem court interpreter of Mandarin Chinese with the NYS Unified Court System and completed the Chinese – English Medical Interpreter Certification of the NYU School of Professional Studies. This enables me to provide interpreting services in district court, legal depositions, doctor appointments, and a variety of meetings and conferences for social service organizations in the greater Long Island/NYC area. The translation services I provide are primarily related to contracts, patent specifications, medical documents, academic articles, and a variety of legal documents.
My education and professional experience are oriented toward facilitating communication across boundaries. In addition to coursework for interpreter certification and my professional experience as an interpreter and translator, I completed an M.A. in Chinese Linguistics and Culture at Tamkang University (Tamsui, Taiwan R.O.C.). As a part of the Taiwan scholarship program funded by the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office, the entire curriculum and thesis were completed in Chinese. Prior to this I received a B.A. in Chinese and Spanish from Tufts University (Medford, M.A.).
