Spanish to English: Inner Beauty: Rethinking Beauty from an Ayurvedic Lens General field: Other Detailed field: Philosophy
Translation - English Writing this book led me to reflect on what beauty means to me. I realize that now as an adult, my perception of beauty and broader and deeper. I also know that this has lead me to dig deeper and work harder to see the beauty in others. To recognize beauty beyond what society deems to be beautiful is journey in and of itself. This was especially challenging for me and many other women in my position. I came of age in the 1990's in Buenos Aires, when anorexia and other illnesses related to women's bodies and the unfair demands of society were rampant.
During these years, physical beauty was on par with godliness, in which the word "goddess" referred to a woman who had fulfilled the aesthetic expectations of the times. Inner beauty was unrecognized, if not completely ignored. Simply put, this was the result of multiple generations of women who had never known true self-love. Generations of women who had never learned how to value themselves.
These times serve as a reflection not only of our disconnection from our own being, but also of the great need of so many to be accepted in the world. As there was such a profound lack of depth and self-love in so many of us, we went looking for comfort in the external world.
In this way, many people subjected themselves to risky situations and extreme behaviors. Some even lost their lives in the attempt to find acceptance in the world.
I personally do not have anything against cosmetic surgery or other beauty treatments. But I do maintain that, first, we must do the inner work, so that if we do decide to manipulate or change our bodies, we do it for ourselves and not for a sense of belonging.
During these years we lost sight of what it means to have respect for our own bodies, our curves, and our nutrition. We denied our bodies space and permission to be in their natural state.
Today I see this as transgenerational trauma, which affected all of the women of my generation, profoundly altering our identity and our femininity.
However, plastic and cosmetic surgery is still a multi-million dollar industry. This tells us that millions of people who were not seen or understood during their childhoods, suffered a disconnection from themselves, and now as adults they are searching for ways to fill that empty space.
Our society is so sick that it validates these forms of compensation, even normalizes and profits from them.
With the great step forward that women are now taking towards their own rights and freedom, these ridiculous condemnations are now dying. Nowadays, the demand to be slim has become a form of torture, however, many women have awaken to the foolishness of this empty goal.
Ayurveda sees beauty through another lens. Instead of being something that is attained from the external world (breast implants, botox, makeup, etc.), beauty is something that shines out from within us.
