Selon Van Gijn (2006), bien qu’il existe un certain degré de variation au sein des différentes communautés de locuteurs, il n’y a pas, à proprement parler, de dialectes du yuracaré.
Classification :
Le yuracaré est généralement considéré comme un isolat.
Des propositions, pour le moment non-concluantes, ont été faites pour le rapprocher de langues géographiquement proches, comme le mosetén, l’itonama ou le cayuvava ainsi que des langues quechuas.
Aire géographique :
Bolivie, Départements de Béni, Province de Moxos et de Cochabamba, Provinces de Chapare et de Carrasco.
Les Yuracarés vivent éparpillés sur un territoire assez vaste compris entre les rivières Isíboro et Securé au nord-ouest et Mamoré et Ichílo à l’est-sud-est ; le long des bassins des rivières Chimore, Chapare et Ichoa.
Nombre de locuteurs :
Selon le recensement bolivien de 2000 il y aurait 1809 locuteurs de yuracaré sur une population ethnique de 2809 personnes. L’UNESCO donne le chiffre de 2675 locuteurs et DoBes donne une estimation d’environ 2500 locuteurs.
Statut de la langue :
Selon les termes du décret suprême 25894 du 11 septembre, approuvé en l’an 2000, le yuracaré est une des langues « indigènes reconnues comme officielles » en Bolivie.
Enseignement :
le yuracaré est présent dans l’éducation scolaire locale qui est bilingue dans les premières années de l’école primaire, avant de devenir progressivement monolingue en espagnol.
Vitalité et Transmission :
Le yuracaré est une langue en danger selon les critères de l’UNESCO.
Une rupture de la transmission a eu lieu il y a 15-20 ans, tous les locuteurs natifs sont donc âgés de plus de 30 ans. Et même parmi la dernière génération de locuteurs natifs, l’usage de l’espagnol est préféré. La quasi-totalité des locuteurs sont bilingues en espagnol. Il resterait 519 locuteurs monolingues, mais selon Crevels (2010) ces chiffres doivent être maniés avec précaution, la réalité est probablement moindre.
Les plus jeunes générations se sont approprié les stéréotypes négatifs entourant leur identité ethnique qui ont longtemps été véhiculé par la société métisse bolivienne, ce qui pourrait expliquer ce dramatique et rapide déclin de la langue.
Le yuracaré fait partie d’un projet de documentation et de revitalisation mené par le Max Planck Institute dans le cadre du programme DoBes
Précisions historiques
Les premières mentions des Yuracarés dans la littérature coloniale remontent au 16ème siècle. Ils vivaient probablement à cette époque plus au sud qu’actuellement, près de l’actuelle ville de Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
Il est difficile de savoir s’ils ont été, ou non, placé sous la dépendance des incas au temps de l’expansion coloniale andine. Lors des migrations guaranis du 16ème siècle, ils sont restés suffisamment distant pour ne pas être réduit en esclavage et ont ainsi échappé à l’assimilation qu’ont subie les Chanés, par exemple.
L’arrivée des espagnols a créé des changements considérables dans l’environnement de la région, particulièrement après la fondation de Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Les Yuracarés ont été contraint à se déplacer et à s’isoler pour survivre, ce qui les a rendus relativement imperméable à la pénétration des missions jésuites dans la région. Globalement la population Yuracaré a été plus imperméable à l’action des différents missionnaires qui se sont succédé que les autres populations voisines. Depuis les années 50, cependant, les New Tribe Mission ont réussi à s’implanter durablement au sein de certaines communautés.
A cette période, l’ouverture de la route de Cochabamba à Santa Cruz a amené des paysans et des anciens mineurs des Andes à s’installer dans la région, rasant la forêt pour transformer les terres en zones agraires ou en production de caoutchouc et surtout pour la plantation de la coca et le trafic de drogue. Ce mouvement continue de nos jours, réduisant toujours un peu plus l’espace de vie des Yuracarés et les obligeant à se déplacer constamment. Mais surtout, cela a conduit d’autres ethnies à se déplacer vers les territoires occupés par les Yuracarés.
Précisions ethnographiques
Situés à la jonction des hautes et basses terres, les Yuracarés se trouvent à la jonction de deux, voire trois grands ensembles culturels : les cultures andines de l’ouest, les cultures amazoniennes de l’est et la région du Chaco au sud-est. Ils partagent des traits culturels avec chacune de ces trois typologies culturelles, bien qu’ils aient un mode de vie plus proche des populations des basses terres amazoniennes.
Traditionnellement l’économie des Yuracarés reposait sur une agriculture sur brûlis, et sur la chasse, la pêche et la cueillette. Cette économie a tendance à disparaître de nos jours et les Yuracarés sont de plus en plus contraints de travailler comme ouvrier agricole dans les plantations, de Coca notamment.
Les villages étaient traditionnellement très éclatés, avec des maisons non-permanentes assez éloignées les unes des autres. Ces villages sont des regroupements de quelques familles. La famille nucléaire est l’unité sociale de base et sont très indépendantes. Un village est un regroupement de plusieurs familles, mais ces regroupements sont en recomposition constante. Les Yuracarés font ainsi preuve d’une grande mobilité qu’il ne faut pas confondre avec un nomadisme de subsistance.
Actuellement, sous l’influence de la société occidentale et des missionnaires, les population sont plus sédentaires, et les villages plus peuplés et plus concentrés. Ils ne restent plus grand-chose de la mythologie traditionnelle et beaucoup de pratiques culturelles ont été abandonnées au cours des 50 dernières années.
Les communautés d’autres ethnies indigènes vivant sur le territoire des Yuracarés sont de plus en plus nombreuses. Dans les provinces de Cochabamba, les Yuracarés fréquentent surtout les Quechuas. Dans le département de Beni, ils sont en contact permanent avec les Trinitarios (qui parlent une langue de la famille arawak), et même des alliances matrimoniales ont lieu entre ethnies.

Main dialects:
According to Van Gijn (2006), although there is a certain amount of variation in the different communities of speakers, there are no dialects of Yuracaré.
Classification:
Yuracaré is generally considered to be a language isolate.
There have been suggestions that Yuracaré might be linked to geographically close languages such as the Quechua languages mosetén, itonama and cayuvava, but this has yet to be proven.
Geographical area:
Moxos Province in the Béni department, and the Chapare and Carrasco regions of Cochabamba Department, Bolivia.
The speakers of Yuracaré are scattered throughout the territory between the Isíboro and Securé rivers in the North-West and the Mamoré and Ichílo rivers in the East-South-East; and also along the basins of the Chimore, Chapare and Ichoa rivers.
Number of speakers: According to the Bolivian census of 2000, there were 1809 speakers of Yuracaré in an ethnic population of 2809 people. UNESCO gives a figure of 2675 speakers and DoBes estimates that there are around 2500 speakers.
Status of the language:
According to the terms of supreme decree 25894 of 11th September, approved in 2000, Yuracaré is one of the “officially recognised indigenous” languages of Bolivia.
Teaching:
Yuracaré is used in local bilingual schooling in the first years of Primary school. Later, students gradually become monolingual in Spanish.
Vitality and transmission:
Yuracaré is an endangered language according to UNESCO criteria.
A break in transmission took place 15 to 20 years ago at which time all of the speakers were over 30 years old. Even among the last generation of native speakers, Spanish is the preferred language. Almost all speakers are bilingual in Yuracaré and Spanish. There are 519 monolingual speakers remaining, but according to Crevels (2010), this figure should be viewed with caution as the likely reality is that this figure is lower.
The younger generations have inherited negative stereotypes surrounding their ethnic identity. These negative stereotypes have been circulated by the mixed population of Bolivia for many years, which could explain the dramatic and rapid decline of the language.
Yuracaré is part of a documentation and revitalisation project being carried out by the Max Planck Institute, with funding from the DoBes programme.
Historical Observations
The first mention of Yuracaré was in the colonial literature of the 16th century. The speakers at this time probably lived further south than they currently do, near the present day town of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
It is difficult to determine whether or not they were under the rule of the Incas at the time of the Andean colonial expansion.
During the Guarani migration in the 16th century, they were far enough away so as not to be subjected to slavery and so, they escaped the assimilation that was forced upon peoples such as the Chané.
The arrival of the Spanish created considerable changes in the region, particularly after the founding of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. The Yuracaré people were forced to relocate and isolate themselves in order to survive, which made them relatively resistant to penetration by the Jesuit missions in the area. Overall, the Yuracarés have been more successful in their resistance to missionaries than neighbouring populations. In the 1950s, however, the New Tribe Mission was successful in gaining a foothold in certain communities.
At this time, the opening of the road from Cochabamba to Santa Cruz allowed farmers and former miners from the Andes to move into the region. They burned down forest in order to transform the land into agrarian zones or areas for the production of rubber, and most notably for cocoa plantations and areas for manufacture of illegal substances, leading to drug trafficking. This migration continues to this day, ever more reducing the land of the Yuracaré people and forcing them to constantly relocate. It has also caused other populations to move closer to Yuracaré lands.
Ethnographic observations
Based at the intersection of high and lowlands, the Yuracarés find themselves at the meeting point of three cultures: the Andean cultures from the West, the Amazonian cultures from the East, and the cultures of the Chaco region in the South-East. The Yuracarés share cultural features with each of the other cultures, but their way of life is most similar to the lowland Amazonian populations.
Traditionally, the Yuracaré people relied on an economy of slash-and-burn agriculture, fishing, hunting and gathering. In this day and age, this type of economy tends not to exist and so, the Yuracarés tend more and more to be restricted to work as agricultural labourers in plantations, especially cocoa plantations.
Their villages were traditionally very fragmented, with non-permanent houses that were quite far apart from one another. These villages are made up of groups of families. The nuclear family is the basic social unit and families are quite independent. Even though a village is made up of several families, the groupings are constantly restructured. The Yuracarés are thus quite mobile, but should not be confused with subsistence economy nomads.
These days, influenced by Western society and missionaries, the population is more sedentary and the villages have greater populations within smaller boundaries. Not much of their traditional mythology remains and many of their cultural practices have been abandoned in the last fifty years.
There are more and more ethnically different indigenous communities living on Yuracaré land. In the provinces of Cochabamba, the Yuracarés mostly associate with the Quechuas. In the Béni department, they are in permanent contact with the Trinitarios (who speak a language from the Arawak family), and there are even interethnic marriage alliances.

Fumer n’a pas laissé que des traces de goudron et de nicotine dans les poumons des Européens... La cigarette a aussi imprégné de son odeur âcre le vocabulaire de leurs langues respectives.
Si « smoking » en anglais désigne aussi un vêtement, il traduit néanmoins ce que l’Allemand entend par « Rauchen », le Polonais par « palenie », le Suédois par « rökning », le Grec par « κάπν ι σμα »… Autrement dit « fumer ».
Plus qu’un simple mot, ce verbe désigne une pratique bien enracinée dans tous les pays de l’Union. Le tabac originaire d’Amérique fut ramené du Nouveau Monde par les conquistadors ibères. Là-bas, on fumait le calumet pour sceller la paix. Un bout d’histoire que l’on le retrouve dans l’expression « fumar la pipa de la paz ». Le nom de cette plante provient sans doute de l’arabe « tubbaq » désignant ironiquement dans cette langue, au Moyen-âge, une racine aux vertues purgatives. De son côté, le mot « cigare » conserve son arôme typiquement amérindien puisque le mot maya pour désigner la fameuse solanacée se dit « siyar ».
Conscients des 650 000 morts causés chaque année par un tel usage en Europe, 140 millions de citoyens de l’Union se sont résolus à ranger leur cendrier au grenier, bien décidés à ne plus, comme le disent les Espagnols « fumando como un carreterro » ( « fumer comme un cocher de fiacre ») en référence à ces professionnels souvent impatients de voir leurs clients remonter en voiture.
Quand ils parlent d’une personne qui fume comme une cheminée « Rauchen wie ein Schlot » les Allemands rivalisent avec les Hongrois pour désigner cette funeste addiction « Füstöl mint a gyárkéméni ». Si les nicotinomanes italiens fument comme des Turcs « fumar come un turco », il est aisé d’imaginer l’affection particulière que ce peuple porte à la bouffarde. Le Français qui « fume comme un pompier » nous rappelle au passage que, jadis, les anciens véhicules de ce prestigieux corps d’élite se repéraient au loin par les puissantes volutes de fumée s’élevant autour de leurs convois.
Aujourd’hui, les autorités sanitaires s’efforcent d’éradiquer ce penchant en contraignant les distributeurs à faire figurer sur chaque paquet des mises en garde contre la nocivité de cette coutume délétère. Cela va des slogans les plus laconiques comme le lapidaire « Fumer tue » (en polonais : « Palenie zabija ») à des avertissements plus élaborés et plus perfides, tel le so british « smoking may reduce the blood flow and cause impotence » (« Fumer peut ralentir le flux sanguin et favoriser l’impuissance »)
Les adeptes du Viagra ne pourront pas dire ensuite qu’ils n’avaient pas été prévenus ! Après des décennies de pubs, magnifié par le cinéma ou la musique, il est évidemment bien difficile de renoncer à ce geste de divine inhalation. Qui n’a pas en mémoire, les paroles de la chanson de l’actrice espagnole Sara Montiel ? « Fumar es un placer genial, sensual… » Bon, promis, j’en grille encore une dernière, puis après… j’arrête !

The words smoking in English, Rauchen in German, fumar in Spanish, fumer in French, palenie in Polish, rökning in Swedish and κάπν ι σμα in Greek represent a tradition that has become rooted in Europe's 27 member states.
Tobacco originally came from America and was taken back to the New World by Spanish conquistadors. There, people smoked pipes to cement peace. This bit of history can be seen in the German and Spanish expressions die Friedenspfeife rauchen fumar and la pipa de la paz (to smoke the peace pipe). The name of the tobacco plant doubtless comes from the Arabic word tubbaq , which, in the Middle Ages, ironically meant a root with purifying properties. However, the word cigar retains its typically Ameridian aroma since the Mayan word for the famous solanaceae (nicotine is part of this family) is pronounced siyar.
Conscious of the 650, 000 deaths that smoking causes each year in Europe, 140 million EU citizens have resolved to put their ashtrays away in the attic: they are determined to no longer, as the Spanish say, fumando como un carreterro (smoke like a Hackney coachman), in reference to those professionals who are in a hurry to see their clients get back in their cars and go.
When someone refers to a person who smokes like a chimney Rauchen wie ein Schlot, the Germans compete with the Hungarians Füstöl mint a gyárkéméni to describe this fatal addiction. If the nicotine-addicted Italians smoke like Turks (fumar come un turco ), it is easy to imagine the particular affection this nation holds for smoking pipes. The French expression, fume comme un pompier (smoke like a fireman), reminds us of days gone by, when the ancient vehicles of this prestigious body of fire-fighting elite scoped out from afar the powerful curls of smoke rising from their convoy.
Today, the health authorities are trying hard to eradicate this habit by forcing distirbutors to display warnings on every packet about the dangers of this obnoxious custom. The slogans range from terse to cutting: from Smoking kills (in French and Polish, Fumer tue and Palenie zabija ) to more elaborate and perfidious warnings, like the very British Smoking may reduce blood flow and cause impotence. The Spaniards are more dramatic: Fumar puede provocar una muerte lenta y dolorosa (Smoking can lead to a slow and painful death).
Users of Viagra can’t say they haven’t been warned! After decades of advertisements, cinema or music idealising it, it is clearly very difficult to renounce this act of divine inhalation. Who amongst us does not remember the words to the song by the Spanish actress Sara Montiel? Fumar es un placer genial, sensual… ('smoking is a wonderful, sensual place'). Ok, I swear, I’ll light up one last one and then … I’m quitting!

Bientôt la révolution dans les tribunes de France ? Après que l'hymne national français a été copieusement sifflé lors du match contre la Tunisie en octobre dernier, de nombreux politiciens ont manifesté leur mécontentement... sur un problème qui en dit long sur la société entière.
Le 14 octobre dernier, l'équipe de France de football recevait la Tunisie au Stade de France. Et comme à chaque fois que les Bleus accueillent une ancienne colonie française du Maghreb (Maroc, Algérie, Tunisie) en région parisienne, les supporters des visiteurs sont aussi nombreux que ceux du pays hôte. En effet, l'Île-de-France accueille une vaste communauté originaire d'Afrique, qu'il s'agisse des parents ou grands-parents nés là-bas et venus travailler en France, ou des enfants et petits-enfants nés en France ou venus rejoindre leur famille. Ces gens, quand ils ont l'occasion de voir l'équipe du pays dont ils sont originaires, se déplacent en masse, ce qui bien normal et compréhensible. Ce qui l'est moins, en revanche, ce sont les sifflets qui accompagnent l'hymne national français à chaque fois qu'une de ces équipes joue à Paris. Ce fut déjà le cas en octobre 2001 face à l'Algérie et en novembre 2007 lors de la venue du Maroc.

Évidemment, ces sifflets ont entrainé de nombreuses réactions des politiciens français de tous bords, en premier lieu du secrétaire d'Etat au sport et ancien entraineur du XV de France de rugby, Bernard Laporte, qui a rapidement annoncé qu'une solution pourrait être de ne plus jouer contre ces équipes là à Paris. Après une réunion organisée dès le lendemain de la rencontre par le président Nicolas Sarkozy, la ministre de la jeunesse et des sports, Roselyne Bachelot, annonça finalement que tout match où la Marseillaise serait sifflée serait arrêté, le temps pour les représentants de l'Etat présents de quitter l'enceinte.
Pourquoi siffler la Marseillaise ?

Les jeunes des banlieues, où habitent de nombreuses familles d'origine maghrébine, souffrent particulièrement du chômage et de l'exclusion. Ces populations en difficultés vivent souvent regroupées dans les mêmes quartiers éloignés des centres d'activités. Une véritable fracture sociale s'est peu à peu dessinée depuis une trentaine d'années et l'origine de ces Français de naissance ou d'adoption est souvent évoquée pour expliquer leurs difficultés d'insertion.
Il existe un véritable déficit de représentativité des populations d'origine étrangère dans les hautes sphères de l'Etat, même si les quelques membres du gouvernement venus de ces « minorités visibles » constituent un premier pas dans la bonne direction pour faire évoluer les mentalités. L'absence totale d'élu issu de l'immigration au Parlement ne favorise pas l'insertion de personnes qui ne se sentent parfois ni Français quand ils sont en France ni Maghrébins quand ils se trouvent au Maghreb. Or, comme le rappelle William Nuytens, sociologue spécialiste des comportements des supporters, dans le quotidien Le Monde, le 15 octobre 2008, « le stade est l'un des rares endroits où l'on peut encore manifester publiquement ». Siffler la Marseillaise permet à certains d'exprimer leur mal-être.
Manifester contre un adversaire d'un soir
Les enquêtes menées après la rencontre ont cependant montré que différentes raisons étaient exprimées pour expliquer ces comportements. Déjà, la situation difficile dans laquelle est l'équipe de France après un Euro raté, ainsi que le maintien contesté de Raymond Domenech à son poste de sélectionneur, ont certainement amené de nombreux spectateurs de touts bords à siffler. On a aussi pu constater que, de tous les joueurs, celui dont le nom a le plus été hué fut le jeune Hatem Ben Arfa, Français d'origine tunisienne, à qui il a pu être reproché d'avoir préféré la tunique française à celle de la Tunisie. La chanteuse Lâam, d'origine tunisienne elle aussi et qui interprétait la Marseillaise, a été elle-même la cible d'une partie des sifflets pour cette même raison.
Le président de l'Union européenne de football (UEFA), Michel Platini, a déclaré de son côté que ce type de comportement existait déjà dans les années 80 avec les immigrés italiens et polonais, et qu'il s'agissait « simplement des manifestations contre un adversaire d'un soir, que l'on veut battre » (Le Monde du 17 octobre 2008). En effet, ces jeunes qui sifflent la Marseillaise sont les mêmes qui manifestaient leur joie dans la rue après les sacres de 1998 et 2000 et qui encourageront Thierry Henry et Franck Ribéry lors du prochain match.
Certains ont aussi reconnu une sorte de compétitions entre les pays du Maghreb ; les Algériens et les Marocains ont sifflé, les Tunisiens ne pouvaient pas faire moins bien. Enfin, de son côté, Aïda Touhiri, journaliste de France Info et spécialiste de l'Afrique, expliquait que durant la Coupe d'Afrique des nations 2004 disputée en Tunisie, « ce sont tous les adversaires des Aigles de Carthage qui ont eu droit au même traitement de faveur ». Pas de quoi appeler à la révolution, donc.

Will revolution soon hit the grandstands of France? After the Marseillaise was booed during a match against Tunisia in October, several politicians expressed their rage. It's a problem which says a lot about society in general.
On 15 October, the French football team welcomed Tunisia to the Stade de France. Like every time the Blues welcome a North African, former French colony (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) to Paris, the visiting fans were as numerous as those of the host country. In fact, l'Île-de-France welcomes a large community of people originally from Africa - be it economic immigrants who have come to work in France, their French-born children and grandchildren or others who have come to be reunited with their French-based families. It is understandable that these people, when they have the chance to see their country's team, arrive en masse. What is less understandable, however, are the booing whistles which accompany the French national anthem each time that one of these teams plays in Paris. It already happened in October 2001 against Algeria, and in November 2007 during a match versus Morocco.

Obviously, these whistles have led to reactions from French politicians from all sides, firstly the secretary of state for sport and former French rugby coach, Bernard Laporte, who quickly announced that one solution could be to no longer play against these teams in Paris. After a meeting organised the day after the match by president Nicolas Sarkozy, the youth and sports minister Roselyne Bachelot announced that all matches at which the Marseillaise were whistled would be stopped in order to allow enough time for any ministers present to leave the venue.
Social symptoms
In the first place, these whistles are a reminder of the riots in autumn 2005. The young people from the suburbs, where many North African families live, experience high rates of unemployment and suffer from marginalisation. These troubled populations often live grouped together, far from the heart of the city. In the last thirty years a real social fracture has gradually begun to appear and the origins of these French-born or –adopted individuals are often referred to as a way of explaining their difficulty to integrate.
The few members of government who come from these ‘visible minorities’ represent a step in the right direction in terms of changing ways of thinking, but there is a real lack of representatives of these groups of immigrants in the upper echelons of the state. The total absence of elected members who are immigrants does not encourage integration of those who feel neither French when they are in France nor African when they are in Africa. Yet as William Nuytens, a sociologist specialising in the behaviour of sports supporters, is quoted as saying in French daily Le Monde on 15 October, ‘the stadium is one of those rare places where one can still publicly protest.’ Whistling the Marseillaise allows some people to express their unhappiness.
Protesting against a one-night adversary

Both the French team’s position after being defeated (by both Netherlands and Italy) on their way out of Euro 2008 and the contested behaviour of Raymond Domenech as manager of the national side, have certainly encouraged spectators of all kinds to whistle. One could also say, of all the players, the one who has been booed at the most is Hatem Ben Arfa. The 21-year-old midfielder was reproached for choosing to play for the French side rather than the Tunisian team, who represent the country which his parents originate from. The singer Lâam, a fellow Tunisian-originating French citizen, was booed when she sang her version of the Marseillaise.
The French president of the European union of football (UEFA), Michel Platini, has declared that in his opinion, this kind of behaviour existed even in the eighties with Italian and Polish immigrants. He says that it is ‘simply a form of protest against a one-night adversary that one wants to beat’ (as quoted in Le Monde, 17 October 2008). In fact, the young people who whistle at the Marseillaise are the same ones who expressed their joy in the streets after the celebrations in 1998 (world cup) and 2000 (Euro cup), and who will root for current Barcelona striker Thierry Henry and Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribéry in the next international.
There is also a noticeable competition between North African countries: the Algerians and the Moroccans whistled, while the Tunisians could not have been better behaved. Finally Aïda Touhiri, France Info journalist and Africa specialist, explained that during the African Cup of Nations 2004 in Tunisia, ‘it was all the opponents of the ‘Carthage Eagles’ (as the Tunisian team are nicknamed) who were treated in the same way.’ No point referring to it as a revolution, then.

On 15 October, Irish prime minister Brian Cowen talks about the plan that his government is to present in order to end the deadlock on the said Lisbon treaty. The plan envisages the creation of stronger institutions for the EU, which is indispensable in times of crisis like today, according to Cowen.
