Can We Handle the Truth?
“Men stumble over the truth from time to time, but most
pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened.”
—WINSTON CHURCHILL
IN THE MOVIE A Few Good Men, Tom Cruise plays a Navy lawyer who
questions a Marine colonel, played by Jack Nicholson, about the murder
of one of Nicholson’s men. The dramatic courtroom scene turns into
a shouting match as Cruise accuses Nicholson of being complicit in the
murder:
Cruise: “Colonel, did you order the Code Red!”
Judge: “You don’t have to answer that question!”
Nicholson: “I’ll answer the question . . . you want answers?”
Cruise: “I think I’m entitled to them.”
Nicholson: “You want answers!”
Cruise: “I want the truth!”
Nicholson: “You can’t handle the truth!”
Nicholson might as well have been yelling at all of America rather
than Cruise because it seems that many in our country can’t handle the
truth. On one hand, we demand truth in virtually every area of our lives.
For example; we demand the truth from:
• loved ones (no one wants lies from a spouse or a child)
• doctors (we want the right medicine prescribed and the right
operations performed)
• stock brokers (we demand that they tell us the truth about
companies they recommend)
• courts (we want them to convict only the truly guilty)
• employers (we want them to tell us the truth and pay us fairly)
• airlines (we demand truly safe planes and truly sober pilots)
We also expect to be told the truth when we pick up a reference
book, read an article, or watch a news story; we want the truth from
advertisers, teachers, and politicians; we assume road signs, medicine
bottles, and food labels reveal the truth. In fact, we demand the truth
for almost every facet of life that affects our money, relationships, safety,
or health.
On the other hand, despite our unwavering demands for truth in
those areas, many of us say we aren’t interested in truth when it comes
to morality or religion. In fact, many downright reject the idea that any
religion can be true.
As we’re sure you’ve noticed, there’s a huge contradiction here. Why
do we demand truth in everything but morality and religion? Why do we
say, “That’s true for you but not for me,” when we’re talking about morality
or religion, but we never even think of such nonsense when we’re talking
to a stock broker about our money or a doctor about our health?
Although few would admit it, our rejection of religious and moral
truth is often on volitional rather than intellectual grounds—we just
don’t want to be held accountable to any moral standards or religious
doctrine. So we blindly accept the self-defeating truth claims of politically
correct intellectuals who tell us that truth does not exist; everything
is relative; there are no absolutes; it’s all a matter of opinion; you ought
not judge; religion is about faith, not facts! Perhaps Augustine was right
when he said that we love the truth when it enlightens us, but we hate
it when it convicts us. Maybe we can’t handle the truth.
In order to resolve our cultural schizophrenia, we need to address
four questions concerning truth:
1. What is truth?
2. Can truth be known?
3. Can truths about God be known?
4. So what? Who cares about truth?
We’ll cover these questions in this chapter and the next.
WHAT IS TRUTH? THE TRUTH ABOUT TRUTH
What is truth? Very simply, truth is “telling it like it is.” When the
Roman governor Pilate asked Jesus “What is truth?” nearly 2,000 years
ago, he didn’t wait for Jesus to respond. Instead, Pilate immediately

acted as if he knew at least some truth. Concerning Jesus, he declared,
“I find no fault in this man” (see John 18:38). By exonerating Jesus,
Pilate was “telling it like it is.”
Truth can also be defined as “that which corresponds to its object”
or “that which describes an actual state of affairs.” Pilate’s judgment was
true because it matched its object; it described an accurate state of
affairs. Jesus really was innocent.
Contrary to what is being taught in many public schools, truth is
not relative but absolute. If something is true, it’s true for all people, at
all times, in all places. All truth claims are absolute, narrow, and exclusive.
Just think about the claim “everything is true.” That’s an absolute,
narrow, and exclusive claim. It excludes its opposite (i.e., it claims that
the statement “everything is not true” is wrong). In fact, all truths
exclude their opposites. Even religious truths.
This became comically clear when a number of years ago I (Norm)
debated religious humanist Michael Constantine Kolenda. Of the many
atheists I debated, he was one of the few who actually read my book
Christian Apologetics prior to the debate.
When it was his turn to speak, Kolenda held up my book and
declared, “These Christians are very narrow-minded people. I read Dr.
Geisler’s book. Do you know what he believes? He believes that
Christianity is true and everything opposed to it is false! These
Christians are very narrow-minded people!”
Well, Kolenda had also written a book which I had read beforehand.
It was titled Religion Without God (which is sort of like romance
without a spouse!). When it was my turn to speak, I held up Kolenda’s
book and declared, “These humanists are very narrow-minded people.
I read Dr. Kolenda’s book. Do you know what he believes? He believes
that humanism is true and everything opposed to it is false! These
humanists are very narrow-minded people!”
The audience chuckled because they could see the point. Humanist
truth claims are just as narrow as Christian truth claims. For if H
(humanism) is true, then anything opposed to H is false. Likewise, if C
(Christianity) is true, then anything opposed to C is false.

• أصحاب الأعمال (نريدهم أن يخبرونا بالحق ويدفعوا أجورنا بالعدل)

ونتوقع كذلك أن نجد الحق عندما نطالع أحد المراجع، أو نقرأ مقالاً، أو نشاهد خبرًا. ونريد الحق أيضًا من المُعلِنين، والمدرسين، والساسة. ونحن نفترض أن اللافتات المرورية، وزجاجات الأدوية، والمعلومات المُبَيَّنة على عبوات الطعام تكشف الحق. إننا في الواقع نطالب بالحق في كل نواحي الحياة تقريبًا التي تؤثر على أموالنا، أو علاقاتنا، أو أماننا، أو صحتنا.

إنَّ رَفـْضَنا للحق الديني والأخلاقي غالبًا ما يرجع لأسباب إرادية أكثر منها فكرية، وإن كان القليلين هم الذين يعترفون بهذا. فنحن لا نريد أن نحاسَب بمقتضى أي معايير أخلاقية أو عقيدة دينية. وهو ما يجعلنا نقبل كالعميان مزاعم الحق التي تـُفـَنِّد نفسها بإثبات عكس ما تريد أن تـُثـْبِته self-defeating التي يطلقها المفكرون ذوو الكياسة الاجتماعية عندما يخبروننا أنه لا يوجد حق، كل شيء نسبي، ليس هناك مطـْلـَقات، إنها مسألة رأي، لا تحكم، الدين يختص بالإيمان لا بالحقائق. وربما أصاب أغسطينوس حين قال إننا نحب الحق عندما ينيرنا، ولكننا نكرهه عندما يُبَكـِّتنا. من المحتمل أننا لا نستطيع التعامل مع الحق.

ما هو الحق؟ حقيقة الحق
ما هو الحق؟ الحق بمنتهى البساطة هو "قول الشيء كما هو". فالوالي الروماني بيلاطس عندما سأل يسوع: ’’ما هو الحق؟‘‘ منذ قرابة ألفي عام، لم ينتظر ليسمع إجابة يسوع. ولكنه سرعان ما تَصَرَّف وكأنه يعرف على الأقل شيئًا من الحق. فقد قال عن يسوع: «أنا لست أجد فيه علة واحدة» (انظر يو18: 38). وبإعلان بيلاطس براءة يسوع كان ’’يقول الشيء كما هو‘‘.
ويمكن تعريف الحق أيضًا بأنه ’’ما يتوافق مع موضوعه‘‘ أو ’’ما يصف الواقع‘‘. فقد كان حكم بيلاطس صحيحًا لأنه كان يتفق مع موضوعه، ووَصَفَ الواقع وصفـًا دقيقـًا. فيسوع كان بريئًا بالفعل.

Source text - English Good will
In order that an action should be morally good, it is not enough that it
conform to the moral law; it must also be done for the sake of the law.
Nothing can possibly be conceived which can be called good, without
qualification, except a good will. Intelligence, wit, judgment, and the
other talents of the mind, or courage, resolution, perseverance, as qualities
of temperament, are undoubtedly good and desirable in many respects;
but these may become extremely bad if the will which uses them is not
good.1 It is the same with the gifts of fortune. Power, riches, honor, health,
and contentment inspire pride, and often presumption, if there is not a
good will to correct the influence of these on the mind.
A good will is good, not because of its attainment of some proposed
end, but simply by virtue of the volition; that is, it is good in itself. The
preeminent good which we call moral can consist in nothing else than the
conception of law itself, insofar as this determines the will.

How to test a maxim
What sort of law can that be, the conception of which must determine the
will, even without regard to the effect expected from it? As I have
deprived the will of every impulse which could arise to it from obedience
to any law, there remains nothing but the universal conformity of its
actions to law in general, i.e., I am never to act otherwise than that I could
also will that my maxim should become a universal law. It is the simple
conformity to law in general that serves the will as its principle. The
common reason of men in its practical judgments perfectly coincides with
this and always has in view the principle here suggested.
Let the question be, for example: May I when in distress make a
promise with the intention not to keep it? I readily distinguish two
significations the question may have: Whether it is prudent, or whether it
is right, to make a false promise? Now it is a wholly different thing to be
truthful from duty and to be so from apprehension of injurious
consequences. In the first case, the very notion of the action already
implies a law for me; in the second case, I must first look about elsewhere
to see what results may affect myself. For to deviate from the principle of
duty is beyond all doubt wicked; but to be unfaithful to my maxim of
prudence may often be advantageous to me, although to abide by it is
certainly safer.
The shortest way to discover whether a lying promise is consistent with
duty is to ask myself, “Should I be content that my maxim (to extricate
myself from difficulty by a false promise) should hold good as a
universal law, for myself as well as for others?” and should I be able to
say to myself, “Every one may make a deceitful promise when he finds
himself in a difficulty from which he cannot otherwise extricate himself”?
While I can will the lie, I cannot will that lying should be a universal law.
For with such a law there would be no promises, since it would be vain to
allege my intention in regard to my future actions to those who would not
believe this allegation, or if they did so would pay me back in my own
coin. Hence my maxim, as soon as it be made a universal law, would
necessarily destroy itself.2
I do not need far-reaching penetration to discern what to do in order that
my will may be morally good. Inexperienced in the course of the world,
incapable of being prepared for all its contingencies, I only ask myself:
Can you will that your maxim should be a universal law? If not, then it
must be rejected, and that not because of a disadvantage from it to myself
or to others, but because it cannot enter as a principle into a possible
universal legislation, and reason extorts from me immediate respect for
such legislation. Acting from pure respect for the practical law is what
constitutes duty, to which every other motive must give place, because it is the condition of a will being good in itself, and the worth of such a will
is above everything else.
Categorical and hypothetical imperatives
An objective principle, in so far as it is obligatory, is called a command (of
reason), and the formula of the command is called an imperative.
All imperatives are expressed by the word ought, and indicate the
relation of an objective law of reason to a will which is not necessarily
determined by it. They say that something would be good to do, but they
say it to a will which does not always do a thing because it is conceived to
be good.
Now all imperatives command either hypothetically or categorically.
The former represent the practical necessity of a possible action as means
to something else that is willed (or which one might will). The categorical
imperative represents an action as necessary of itself without reference to
another end, i.e., as objectively necessary.3
A categorical imperative commands a certain conduct immediately,
without having as its condition any other purpose to be attained by it.
This imperative may be called that of morality. There is but one [basic]
categorical imperative: Act only on that maxim whereby you can at the
same time will that it should become a universal law.
Treat people with respect—do not just use them
Man, and generally any rational being, exists as an end in himself, not
merely as a means to be arbitrarily used by this or that will. Nonrational
beings have only a relative value as means, and are therefore called
things; rational beings, on the contrary, are called persons, because their
very nature points them out as ends in themselves.
If then there is a categorical imperative, it must be drawn from that
which is necessarily an end for everyone because it is an end in itself. The
foundation is: rational nature exists as an end in itself. I necessarily
conceive my own existence as being so; so this is a subjective principle of
action. But every other rational being regards its existence similarly, so it
is at the same time an objective principle. Accordingly the practical
imperative will be as follows: So act as to treat humanity, whether in
your own person or in that of any other, in every case as an end in itself,
never only as means. these individuals, and (3) asking whether we desire that the maxim be
followed regardless of where we imagine ourselves in the situation.

then you ought to take aspirin” and “If you want people to be honest to
you, then you ought to be honest to them.” In contrast, a categorical (or

الأوامر الوجوبية المطلقة والافتراضية
المبدأ الموضوعي، من حيث كونه ملزِمًا، يطلَق عليه أمر command (من العقل)، ويطلَق على شكل هذا الأمر أمر وجوبي imperative.
ويعبَّر عن كل الأوامر الوجوبية بكلمة "يجب" ought وتشير إلى العلاقة بين قانون موضوعي من قوانين العقل وإرادة لا يُشترط فيها أن تكون محكومة بهذا القانون. فهذه القوانين تقول إن فعلاً بعينه خَيِّر، ولكنها تقول هذا لإرادة لا تفعل دائمًا الشيء لأنه يُفهَم على أنه خَيِّر.
وكل الأوامر الوجوبية تأمر إما افتراضيًا hypothetically أو مطلقًا categorically. وتمثل الفئة الأولى الضرورة العملية لفعل معين باعتباره وسيلة لشيء آخر مراد (أو يريده المرء). أما الأمر الوجوبي المطلق categorical imperative فهو يمثل فعلاً لازمًا في ذاته دون الرجوع لغاية أخرى، أي أنه لازم موضوعيًا objectively necessary.3
والأمر الوجوبي المطلق يأمر بسلوك معين على نحو مباشر دون أن يُشترط فيه أي غرض آخر يَبْلغه. ويمكن أن يطلَق على هذا الأمر الوجوبي أنه أمر وجوبي أخلاقي. وليس هناك إلا أمر وجوبي مطلق [أساسي] واحد: تصرَّف وفقًا للمبدأ الذي يمْكنك أن تريد له أن يصبح قانونًا شاملاً.
عامل الناس باحترام، لا تستخدمهم
الإنسان وأي كائن عاقل عمومًا يوجد باعتباره غاية في ذاته وليس مجرد وسيلة تستخدمها هذه الإرادة أو تلك اعتباطيًا. أما الكائنات غير العاقلة فليست لها إلا قيمة نسبية باعتبارها وسائل، ومن ثَمَّ يطلَق عليها أشياء. ولكن الكائنات العاقلة يطلَق عليها أشخاص، لأن صميم طبيعتهم يميزهم باعتبارهم غايات في حد ذاتهم.
ومن ثَمَّ، إنْ وُجِد أمر وجوبي مطلق، فلابد أن يُشتق من غاية ضرورية للجميع لأنها غاية في حد ذاتها. فالأساس هو: الطبيعة العاقلة توجد باعتبارها غاية في ذاتها. وأنا أدرك بالضرورة وجودي باعتباره هكذا: يُعتبر هذا مبدأ ذاتيًا للفعل. ولكن كل الكائنات العاقلة ترى وجودها على نحو مشابه، وهذا ما يجعله في الوقت نفسه مبدأ موضوعيًا. وعليه فالأمر الوجوبي العملي practical imperative هو كالآتي: إذَن تصرَّف بحيث تعامِل البشرية، سواء في شخصك أو في شخص أي فرد آخر، في كل الحالات باعتبارها غاية في ذاتها، ولا تعاملها أبدًا بوصفها وسيلة.
هؤلاء الأفراد، (3) السؤال عما إذا كنا نرغب في أن يُتبع المبدأ بغض النظر عن الوضع الذي نتوقع فيه أنفسنا في الموقف. فيما يلي أوامر وجوبية افتراضية hypothetical imperatives: ’’إن أردت التخلص من الصداع، يجب أن تأخذ أسبرين‘‘ ’’إن أردت أن يكون الناس صادقين معك، يجب أن تكون صادقًا معهم‘‘. وعلى العكس من ذلك، الأمر الوجوبي المطلق (أو الأخلاقي) الذي يأمر بالفعل مباشرة (ليس بوصفه وسيلة لغاية أبعد) كما في ’’يجب أن تكون صادقًا مع الآخرين‘‘.

I am originally a teacher of English by profession. I have formal training in teaching English as a foreign language for preparatory and secondary school students. But I currently teach adults.
I also studied written translation and simultaneous interpreting at the American University in Cairo (AUC). The study covered all the main fields of translation including economics, law, documents, UN, speeches, slang, newspaper and others. I also taught written translation at the Arabic and Translation Studies Division (ATS), AUC from 2006-2010.
I translated numerous books from English into Arabic, mostly in the fields of Christian theology, history, and apologetics. I also translate texts on philosophy, development, human rights, education, and disability. I can translate 2000 words a day. I consider myself punctual and capable of meeting deadlines.
In addition to written translation, I also work in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, mostly in the same fields in which I do written translation.
