Yvonne Perot 1913-1936
Romane beginnen so. Mit einem vergilbten Fotoalbum, das in einem Antiquariat gefunden wird, darin ist die Fotografie einer schönen jungen Frau mit Bubikopf. Und mit einer jungen Künstlerin, die beginnt, nach den Spuren dieser Frau zu suchen. Spuren, die sie nach Belgien, in einen kleinen Ort und schließlich an ein Grab führen, und sie muss erkennen: Ihr Geburtsdatum ist auch das der Unbekannten. Und der Roman endet schließlich mit einem alten Mann, der allein und vergessen in einem Schloss haust, der umgebende Garten ist längst überwuchert. Dem jugendlichen Besuch zuliebe erinnert er sich noch einmal, an seine geliebte Cousine Yvonne Perot, die mit 23 Jahren bei der Geburt ihres ersten Kindes starb.
Filme beginnen so. Mit einem hässlichen Hotelzimmer in einer Kleinstadt, vor dem Fenster führt eine Schnellstraße vorbei, man erkennt geparkte Autos, Schienen, einen Weg, undeutlich einen Fluss. Eine Durchgangsstation, nichts Heimatliches, Wohnliches. Gäste im Leben. Ein Leben auf der Suche. Und langsam wird es dunkel, bis nur noch wenige Lichter über dem Fluss flimmern. Und am Fenster steht eine Fotografin mit einer altmodischen Lochkamera, und fotografiert ohne aufzuhören, fast manisch, bis es zu dunkel wird zum Fotografieren.
Wenn die Künstlerin Karen Oostenbrink heißt, dann wird aus diesem Stoff kein Roman und kein Film, sondern eine künstlerische Recherche, die am Ende in fünf Lochbildern und einem Video gerinnt. Die in Berlin lebende Niederländerin, die das Leben der Yvonne Perot 2006 zum Thema ihrer Diplomarbeit an der Kunstakademie von Den Haag gemacht hat, ist klug genug, das kurze Leben dieser belgischen Fabrikantentochter nicht nachzuerzählen. Auch nicht die Geschichte ihrer abenteuerlichen Suche. Was sie zeigt, ist der Widerschein der Erinnerung im Bild. Im alten, schönen Gesicht des belgischen Cousins, der am Ende keine Worte mehr findet, die Pfeife sucht. Zurück bleibt ein abgewetzter Samtsessel. Und in den Lochbildern aus dem Hotelzimmer in Vizé, auf denen sich nicht nur der Tag verdunkelt, sondern auch die Erinnerung. Im Verstreichen der Zeit.

Karen Oostenbrink (*1984 Haarlem, NL) studierte von 2002 bis 2006 Bildhauerei an der Königlichen Kunstakademie Den Haag und seit 2004 studiert sie Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Leiden und der Humboldt Universität in Berlin. Seit September 2007 ist sie an der Produzentengalerie Komet, Berlin beteiligt.
Christina Tilmann (*1969 Bonn) ist Kulturredakteurin beim Berliner "Tagesspiegel" und schreibt vor allem über Bildende Kunst und Film.

Novels start like this. With a yellowed photograph album, found in an antique’s shop, a photo of a pretty young woman with a pixie haircut inside. And with a young artist who begins to look for traces of this woman. Traces which lead her to a small town in Belgium and finally to a grave, and her realization: she shares a birthday with her unknown subject. And the novel ends at last with an old man, living alone and forgotten in a castle, the surrounding garden long since overgrown. Once again, for the sake of the youthful visitor, he remembers his beloved cousin Yvonne Perot, who died at 23 during the birth of her first child.
Films start like this. With a shabby hotel room in a small town; a busy road goes past the window, you can see parked cars, rails, a road, the vague shape of a river. A temporary station, nothing of the homely or domestic about it. Guests in life. A life spent searching. Then, slowly, it grows dark, until just a few lights glow over the river. Then at the window a female photographer stands with an old-fashioned pinhole camera, and photographs unceasingly, almost manically, until it gets too dark to take pictures any more.
If that photographer happens to be Karen Oostenbrink, then this raw material does not end up as a novel or a film, but rather an artistic investigation, one finally spilling out into five hole patterns and a video. The Dutchwoman, resident in Berlin, who, in 2006 based her diploma thesis at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, on the life of Yvonne Perot, wisely avoids trying to recount the short life of the daughter of a Belgian factory owner. Nor the story of her adventurous search. What she shows instead is the reflection of memory in an image: In the old, handsome face of the Belgian cousin, who can finally find no more words and takes up his pipe. An old worn out velvet armchair remains behind. And in the hole patterns from the hotel room in Vizé, on which not only just day but also memory itself darkens. In the vanishing of time.

Karen Oostenbrink (born 1984 in Haarlem, Holland) studied sculpture at the Royal Academy of Art at the Hague from 2002 to 2006. Since 2004, she studies history of art at the University of Leiden and the Humboldt University of Berlin. Since 2007, she is involved in the co-operative art gallery Komet in Berlin.
Christina Tilmann (born 1969 in Bonn, Germany) is Culture Editor of the Berliner Tagesspiegel and writes primarily about visual arts and film.
