English to Persian (Farsi): "H.G. Wells: Time Traveler"
Source text - English ACT ONE
HOST: If all he had done was written The Time Machine, H.G. Wells reputation would be assured, but Wells was famous for much more. He predicted chemical warfare, computer chips, and modern birth control. A champion of free love, he helped destroy Victorian morality. He wrote a pioneering history of the world that sold millions and added to his reputation and prestige. During the early 20th century, Wells was the most celebrated and influential writer in the world. Coming up, the extraordinary life of H.G. Wells.
HOST (V.O.): If ever a man was ahead of his time, it was H.G. Wells. Obsessed with the future, he imagined a time machine. His ideas were shocking, especially about sex, and he lived them out in two marriages and countless affairs. His ideas were prophetic, especially those about the crisis looming over man’s future.
NEWSREEL (V.O.): Today, man is probing into the mysteries of the universe. Can he penetrate the mystery of time itself?
HOST (V.O.): H.G. Wells will always be known as the author of, The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, fantasies that influenced modern science fiction. He was among the first to understand the shadow of disaster hanging over the twentieth century. The real possibility of complete destruction of the earth. He was a dominating figure for forty years. One of the most famous writers of his time. An acclaimed novelist, historian, social critic and pioneer of sexual freedom and women's rights. H.G. Wells was torn between a twentieth century vision of catastrophe - he forecast both world wars - and a belief in the utopian promise of man.
". . .which shall it be?"
HOST (V.O.): Herbert George Wells began his travel through time on September 21, 1866. He was born in Bromley, a small town outside of London, during the Victorian period. Wells' parents belonged to the lower end of society. His mother, Sarah, was a maid, his father Joseph, a gardener. The couple bought a china shop but business was bad, and young Wells grew up in the basement of the store, a dismal hole is how he would remember it. He spent hours looking up through a grating at the people walking by. When he was seven, Wells broke his leg.
DAVID SMITH: The normal therapy was to put it in a cast and then lie for three months before you came out. Wells, all he could do was lie and read books. But reading opened an immense world for him. He called it a turning point. My lucky moment.
HOST (V.O.): Through books Wells’ imagination soared. By the time he was ten, he was writing his own novels. The Desert Daisy is the only one to survive.
DAVID SMITH: The Desert Daisy is an example of Wells at his best as a child. It is a comic strip, but it's also a novel. To do it at ten years old is incredible, the pictures are good and the text is worth reading.
OLIVER WELLS: This book is amazing. It has a title page, a preface to the first edition. Dear Reader, you have in your hands, The Desert Daisy, a romance of the olden time. I think, that if this book is not read when Shakespeare is forgotten, it will have been grievously ill-treated.
HOST (V.O.): Despite his talent, Wells’ prospects were bleak. His mother was forced to return to work as a servant. H.G., just thirteen, was taken out of school and sent to become a draper's apprentice.
H.G. WELLS (V.O.): Now I had to put the books away, give up drawing and painting and stop writing stories and serve an employer. I hated this place.
DAVID SMITH: The life of an apprentice was dark and gloomy, and the hours were long. It started seven in the morning, went till eight at night.
MARTIN WELLS: He wasn't good at all. He would spend time reading books when he should have been working and he couldn't keep accounts properly. He was an unsatisfactory employee.
HOST (V.O.): Not surprisingly, young Bert Wells was fired after three months. He joined his mother who was chief housekeeper at an estate called Up Park. The boy had the run of the place including the mansion library, and it changed his life. He read books by Swift and Defoe, whose travel fantasies made an impression. And he read Plato's Republic, which spurred Wells to look at his own world.
H.G. WELLS (V.O.): That was for me a very releasing book. Here was the amazing suggestion that the whole fabric of law, custom and worship which seemed so established might be cast away and made anew.
HOST (V.O.): At Up Park, Wells found a telescope. He sat spellbound at night examining the craters of the moon. Up Park gave Wells a glimpse of another world, the upper class world of nineteenth century England.
DAVID SMITH: I think Wells was influenced by his stay at Up Park, he realized that his horizons could be greater. Though he's still a part of the downstairs world, but he sees the upstairs world, and realizes that he can get to it.
HOST (V.O.): But after four months Sarah Wells again apprenticed young H.G. to be a draper. This time at the South Sea Drapery Emporium,
H.G. WELLS (V.O.): Almost as unquestioning as her belief in our father was her belief in drapers. She thought that to work behind a counter was the best lot attainable by man. At any rate, by men at our social level.
HOST (V.O.): Barely fourteen, Wells was now working the job that he was expected to keep for life. A job that took no account of his talents and dreams.
" . . .Get on with it Wells. Has anyone seen Wells? But you haven't . . ."
H.G. WELLS (V.O.): At the back of my mind, growing larger and more vivid, like the word of the Lord to one of his prophets was the injunction, "Get out of this trade before it is too late. At any cost, get out it."
DAVID SMITH: By the time he was fifteen he knew that he could not stand it, so he walked from South Sea to Up Park, and said to his mother, I can't do it any more, and I'm going to kill myself. She couldn't believe it. Being a draper was a wonderful thing. Wells reiterated his threat to commit suicide. She knew the threat was real.
HOST (V.O.): Wells found a job as a teacher's aide in the town of Midhurst. At the grammer school he taught full time, but spent every spare moment studying all kinds of subjects, driven by a sense that this was his chance to learn and to escape the draper's life. In a frenzy, Wells squeezed an entire education into two years.
DAVID SMITH: I don't think he slept, I don't see how he could have. He won every prize that was offered in those two years, and on every subject. Chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology, botany, anything that you can name, he took the test, he won the prize and the money.
HOST (V.O.): Wells won a university scholarship to study in London. His impossible dream had become reality. Wells had broken through the boundaries of Victorian society. He was going to be a university student, a man of science.

(South Sea Drapery Emporium)
