There are many studies confirming the excellent effect and safety of glucosamine sulfate. In one well designed study of 178 patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee (Qiu GX et al., 1998), one group was treated for 4 weeks with glucosamine sulfate 1500 mg daily and the other group with ibuprofen at 1200 mg per day. Glucosamine relieved the symptoms as effectively as ibuprofen, and was significantly better tolerated than ibuprofen. The safety and tolerability of glucosamine can easily be explained by the fact that it is a physiological substance normally used by the body.
As with most natural remedies the therapeutic effect of glucosamine does not come immediately, and usually takes some weeks to appear (1-8 weeks). Once achieved, it tends to persist for a long time even after discontinuation of the treatment.
A healthy joint
To understand the pathological processes in the joint, we need to take a look at the normal healthy joint. Joints are held together by a joint capsule and designed to allow smooth movement between adjacent bones. In the type of joint commonly affected by arthritic diseases, the highly movable joints, we find the bone ends covered by articular cartilage and the joint space enclosed by a synovial membrane. This thin membrane secretes synovial fluid that lubricates the space between the cartilage-covered joint-forming bones. The cartilage contains no blood vessels or nerves and receives its nutrients by diffusion from the synovial fluid and from the bone.

Existem muitos estudos que confirmam o excelente efeito e tolerância do sulfato de glucosamina. Num ensaio clínico bem estruturado que incluía 178 doentes que sofriam de artrose do joelho (Qiu GX al. de et., 1998), um grupo foi tratado diariamente durante 4 semanas com 1500 mg de sulfato de glucosamina e o outro com 1200 mg diários de ibuprofeno. A glucosamina aliviou os sintomas com a mesma eficácia que o ibuprofeno e foi significativamente mais bem tolerada do que o ibuprofeno. A segurança e tolerância da glucosamina podem ser facilmente explicadas, pois a glucosamina é uma substância fisiológica usada pelo organismo.
Tal como acontece com a maior parte dos medicamentos naturais, o efeito terapêutico de glucosamina não é imediato e normalmente demora algumas semanas a surgir (1-8 semanas). Uma vez alcançado, tende a persistir durante bastante tempo, mesmo após a descontinuação do tratamento.
Uma articulação saudável
Para compreender os processos patológicos da articulação, é necessário analisar uma articulação saudável. As articulações são unidas por uma cápsula de tecido fibroso e devem permitir um movimento suave entre ossos adjacentes. No tipo de articulação geralmente afectado por doenças artríticas, articulações altamente instáveis, as extremidades dos ossos estão cobertas por uma cartilagem articular e o espaço articular ocupado por uma membrana sinovial. Esta fina membrana segrega líquido sinovial que lubrifica o espaço entre os ossos da articulação cobertos por cartilagem. A cartilagem não contém vasos sanguíneos ou nervos e recebe os nutrientes por difusão a partir do fluído sinovial e do osso.

em O Feliz Independente... de Teodoro de Almeida
A Ideia Nova, que brincava no açafate da costura e no bastidor, eram as traduções da Bíblia Económica, em que a velha virtude e a velha linguagem portuguesa soluçavam os últimos arrancos, nos braços do Feliz Independente do padre Teodoro de Almeida. O romance deu aos corações das senhoras de Basto feitios e jeitos novos, ensinando-lhes o que diz a aurora, o que segredam as transparências cetinosas do arrebol, o que se deve cismar quando as fontes tépidas murmuram, e tudo o mais respectivo a flores, brisas e pássaros.

1. O manual dos tiranicidas tranquilos no enfoque histórico- literário
O Feliz Independente do Mundo e da Fortuna ou Arte de Viver Contente em quaesquer Trabalhos da Vida foi publicado pela primeira vez em 1779, na Régia Oficina Tipográfica em Lisboa. O autor da obra, padre oratoriano Teodoro de Almeida (1722-1804), tinha já editado os primeiros volumes da Recreação Filosófica (opúsculo de dez tomos, publicado entre 1751 e 1800) e algumas obras devocionárias. O nome de Teodoro de Almeida tornar-se-á célebre através de intensa divulgação filosófica, científica e literária. A moldura de interesses do P. Almeida incorporou os métodos da filosofia moderna do iluminismo francês, encaixados no modelo pedagógico oratoriano. A visão do mundo desvendada por este professor de filosofia na Congregação do Oratório revela sempre a presença de Deus, ´´a sã teologia e sólida metafísica´´, encaminhando o espírito humano para ´´a vida na perpétua alegria que Deus lhe aconselhava´´ ( Almeida 2001,75).
Padre Teodoro de Almeida acompanhou um século XVIII política, religiosa e socialmente complexo. Assistiu aos primeiros anos do governo pombalino, sofreu com a destruição de Lisboa em 1 de Novembro de 1755, foi desterrado para o Porto (1760) por Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, depois de ter sido afastado dos círculos de corte, em parceria com outros congregados e membros de nobreza, expulsados para cidades de província ou arrastados para as prisões nos fortes e castelos de Portugal. Podemos aceitar que as razões diretas dos exílios involuntários da época se prendem, em primeiro lugar, com a publicação do tratado regalista do intendente da polícia, Inácio Ferreira do Souto, De incircunscripta potestate regis (1759) que não havia recebido o beneplácito dos censores do Ordinário dos Congregados do Oratório e do Paço, provocando intervenção directa de Sebastião José e uma acesa discussão com o inquisidor-mor, D. José de Bragança, um dos meninos de Palhavã. Teodoro de Almeida parece não ter feito parte deste grupo de censores, embora se saiba que tivesse censurado (em 1758) o Compêndio da Admirável Vida da Venerável Madre Maria do Lado, publicado em Lisboa em 1762. Essa actividade ia ganhar-lhe inimigos no regime despótico de Pombal, mesmo que a sua vasta obra filosófica e literária entrava em diálogo com a cultura europeia do seu tempo. Basta ler os documentos da época e os processos que excluíam os oratorianos da vida pública para verificar que o já então conde de Oeiras não hesitava em considerar Teodoro de Almeida um elemento de perturbação face à obediência que a Congregação devia ao rei e à política desenvolvida pelo marquês de Pombal.
As ligações de Almeida aos marqueses de Távora, castigados com pena de morte em Janeiro de 1759, ou às ´´puritanas´´, no sentido da ´´limpeza´´ de sangue, famílias de Angeja, Óbidos, Castelo-Melhor, autorizam a suposição de que o oratoriano integrava grupos política e culturalmente hostis a Sebastião José. Daí que, depois de oito anos passados no Porto, temendo a prisão, no ano de 1768, Teodoro de Almeida tenha abandonado Portugal. Em Vigo, esperou encontrar barco que o levasse à Holanda onde já estava João Chevalier, outro emigrado pombalino, sobrinho de Luís António Verney. Conheceu a fome, o frio e a animosidade inicial, pois a hábito preto próprio dos congregados de S. Filipe de Néry foi confundido com os vestes dos jesuítas expulsos de Portugal (1759). Alterado o rumo da viagem, Almeida aterrou em França e lá ficou por quase dez anos, até que a morte de D. José I e a queda em desgraça de Pombal lhe renovaram a vontade de regressar. Em 1788, depois de ter voltado à pátria, reencontrou amigos antigos, alguns deles também recentemente saídos dos cárceres pombalinos, reatou as tarefas do professor de Filosofia e, por fim, voltou a dirigir espiritualmente elementos de uma nobreza de corte que de novo ocupava postos de relevo no governo de Portugal. Empenhou-se também na fundação da Academia das Ciências (1780) e, essencialmente, continou a escrever e a publicar. Seria de acrescentar que já no ano de 1758 o autor da Recreação Filosófica tinha sido eleito membro da Real Academia de Londres.
A data da primeira edição do Feliz Independente (1779), autoriza a suposição de que a obra tenha sido redigida ao longo do exílio em França, circunstância que corrobora o também oratoriano Joaquim Dâmaso, o biógrafo de Teodoro de Almeida. Esta obra sobre a felicidade na vida – um lugar temático de muitas confluências filosóficas, estéticas, sociais e políticas – foi construída no tempo de Pombal e como consequência da oposição anti-pombalina e lida. Assim sendo, pode ser lida como uma crítica a um exercício do poder pautado pela violência sobre os povos. Esta leitura universalizou-se, permitindo-nos o enquadramento de O Feliz Independente em termos de um manual dos tiranicidas tranquilos.
Em Portugal, a fortuna do Feliz Independente limitou-se a cinco edições. A primeira, já referida, foi publicada, em dois volumes. A segunda, de 1786, transcrita na edição moderna de Zulmira de Santos (2001), foi corrigida pelo autor e acrescentada com notas e estampas, constituindo a matriz de reedições posteriores, em 1835, 1844 e 1861. Curiosamente, existem vários exemplares da edição de 1786, objecto, certamente, de uma tiragem mais elevada que a de 1779, que integram um retrato de Toedoro de Almeida, em posição de escrita, com a data de nascimento e a data da morte. O rasto do Padre Teodoro de Almeida pode seguir-se ao longo de todo o século XIX e inícios de século XX, mesmo que as opiniões da crítica portuguesa sobre a sua obra nem sempre fossem positivas; Camilo Castelo Branco relacionou o Feliz Independente com o código do género novelesco e um suave bucolismo feminino, enquadrando-o, no segundo volume das Novelas do Minho, no âmbito de leituras nacionais, aconselháveis e edificantes para o público feminino (1971, 10). É de supor que o longo romance de Teodoro de Almeida fosse pasto espiritual de uma menina vaporosa, acomodada ao molde de imaginação de Vasco Marramaque, ou vertida no Telémaco de Fénelon, folheado distraídamente nas horas de lazer no jardim de S. Lázaro no Porto. No século XIX, lia-se O Feliz Independente como uma obra dos tempos velhos, impermeável às ´´comichões de novas ideias´´ (12) e à alegada degeneração de usos e costumes promovida pelo sistema eleitoral.
No século XVIII, as brumas da epopeia em prosa nem sempre sustentaram a velha ordem político-social em Portugal. A Pólonia, nos primeiros tempos de O Feliz Independente, tinha já sofrido a primeira partilha e a substituição do seu último rei, Estanislau Augusto Poniatowski II da dinastia dos Wettin da Saxónia pelo regime russo, prusso e alemã. Era de acrescentar que o reinado de Estanislau Augusto Poniatowski II (1764-1772) foi um período importante para o desenvolvimento da literatura polaca. O nosso primeiro romance moderno, As Aventuras de Mikołaj Doświadczyński (Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki), da autoria do bispo Inácio Krasicki (1735-1801) é de 1776 e conta umas viagens de experiência feitas de um protagonista acolhido numa ilha chamada Nipu. Esse ´´mais um arquipélago das utopias literárias´´ (Siewierski 2000, 69), um retrato de um país de civilização ideal é confrontado com a realidade do século XVIII, um ´´século completamente degradado e poluído´´ (ap. 2000, 69) – como disse o bispo Krasicki no prefácio à obra. Todos os encantos da ilha Nipu não compensam a falta de liberdade e depois de muitas aventuras extraordinárias nas duas Américas e na Europa, Doświadczyński volta à sua terra natal, fixa-se na aldeia dos seus pais, introduz reformas para fazer os seus camponeses felizes. Uma outra felicidade à polaca, muito bem recebida pela crítica da época por ser um relato de aventuras em terras distantes.
Como classificar, à luz da teorização literária do século XVIII, O Feliz Independente? Teodoro de Almeida, no Prólogo, ao assumir tomar como modelo As Aventuras de Telémaco, que Fénelon escreveu para o delfim de França, franqueou a denominação do poema épico em prosa, buscando um herói verdadeiro na história e traçando o objectivo da sua obra como ´´levar insensivelmente os leitores à violência e guerra que deviam fazer às suas paixões; e a uma cega e total entrega nos braços da divina providência, quando nos faz caminhar por cima de abrolhos e de espinhos: lição precisíssima para a felicidade da vida´´ (2001, 36). Fazer realçar a virtude do herói, assim como o tinham feito Virgílio, Tasso e Camões nos seus poemas épicos, guardar o preceito horaciano de unir o útil ao proveitoso, exceder em perfeição doutrinária a obra de Fénelon escrita em verso, adaptá-la ao cenário português era o objectivo literário e estético do Padre Teodoro de Almeida. Surpreende, porém, que – deixando à parte toda a polémica em torno da novela em prosa moralizante originada pelo Télémaque e o valor estético da prosa poética do romance de formação em português - o herói ´´em que fizesse brilhar a virtude´´ (36) foi buscado na história da Polónia, ´´entre os príncipes cristãos´´ (36) oriundos do Leste europeu. Mais ainda, era capaz de ilustrar, com a sua vida, ´´as máximas tiradas do Evangelho´´ (36-37).
No entanto, em Espanha, o Feliz Independente de Todoro de Almeida havia feito o seu sucesso, em traduções várias (1783, reeditada em 1784 e 1785; 1788 ) e até despertando imitações, como aconteceu com a obra de Andres Merino Poema. La muger feliz, dependiente del mundo y de la fortuna. Obra original, dedicada à la sereníssima señora Princesa de Asturias, Doña Lusisa de Borbon (Madrid, 1786). Segundo o autor espanhol, o amor à humanidade e em especial às mulheres que vão encontrar nela exemplo de ´´virtud y discrecion´´ para a educação dos seus filhos e para que uma mulher aprenda estar independente do mundo e da fortuna. Existe também uma tradução francesa, feita a partir da versão espanhola, intitulada L´Homme Heureux dans toutes les situations de la vie ou les aventures de Misseno (Paris, 1820). O padrão de Télemaque de Fénelon e da convenção do Buildungsroman (i.e., do romance de formação) foram patenteados pela intriga que gira em torno das experiências e aventuras que sofrem as personagens (o Conde de Morávia, sua irmã Sofia, Vladislau-Misseno, um príncipe polaco do século XII) durante o tempo de formação e de educação numa ermida na Silésia, rumando a maturidade espiritual e o regresso feliz para a Polónia. O objectivo máximo do homem ´´feliz e independente´´ seria uma vida fora da corte de Cracóvia, no seu ´´retiro e sosego, sem o tumulto do governo, nem o embaraço de encargos´´ (2001, 441) .
Lembremos ainda que, segundo a valorização social e ética do género épico, as personagens devem ser de alta extracção social e muitas das questões tratadas se prendem com a legitimidade e as formas de exercício do poder. A imitação (e transfiguração criadora) da natureza, o recuso frequente a entidades alegóricas, o género épico miscigenado com o romance de cavalaria e o romance de formação definem a estruturação literária da prosa poética da novela em foco de análise.
2. Vladislau/Misseno - ´´o instrumento da pública felicidade´´
O rei da Polónia Vladislau II (1105-1159), o Exilado - o porta-voz do autor, cujo discurso se ouve ao longo da narrativa era o primogénito dos cinco filhos do rei polaco Boleslau III Boca Torta (1086-1138) da dinastia dos Piast. Afastado pelos irmãos do trono em 1146, tentou (com a ajuda dos alemães) reconquistar o poder. Goradas essas tentativas, ficou com o principado da Silésia. Seria bem possível que Teodoro de Almeida conhecesse também as vicissitudes de um príncipe polaco Ladislau III Loripex (1166-1231), de sorte congénere à do seu antepassado, banido de Cracóvia pelos nobres e também refugiado na Silésia – facto referido pelo Livro VIII, o último do primeiro tomo de O Feliz Independente. Ambos ou um protagonista da Polónia, torna(m)-se heterónimo da sua pátria no exílio e da condenação do exercício do poder através do crime e violência. Misseno/Vladislau, o protagonista polaco de Teodoro de Almeida ´´é homem de grandes empresas, capaz de revolver meio mundo´´ (2001, 361). Na trama diegética do romance de Almeida serve de modelo de um domador das fúrias e paixões humanas seguido pelos grandes deste mundo, sempre ´´com a maior docilidade´´ (377). Na nossa visão, o (in)feliz filósofo Misseno padroniza exemplarmente um tiranicida tranquilo. O exemplo da vida e das virtudes de Misseno oferecem um ´´novo e singular método (...) para triunfar dos soberanos´´ (381).
No tempo da naração de O Feliz Independente, o território da Polónia (formada como nação em 966 com a conversão ao cristianismo de Miecislau I em 966) estava dividido em três regiões que só viriam a reunificar-se no reinado de Ladislau I, o Breve (1306-1333) que pôs fim às lutas fratrícidas que pautaram o nosso século XII e XIII. O país ia prosperar sob o domínio de Casimiro III, o Grande (1330-1370), que – como reza o velho ditado polaco – ´´fundou a Polónia a partir da madeira e a deixou em pedra´´. A obra do Padre Teodoro de Almeida desvenda um bom conhecimento daquele período da formação da Polónia:
Que me dizeis a Piast o filósofo? A Miecislau I, a Boleslau seu filho, imagem de um príncipe perfeito? A Casimiro seu neto, admiração que foi do seu século? Que me dizeis ao prínipe, que hoje reina no trono da Polónia, que soube proferir um bom amigo a um bom reino? Cuidais que eles não tinham paixões? Pouca honra lhes fazeis, se por isso é que os colocais na classe dos verdadeiros heróis.
(Almeida 2001, 268).
É claro que o Padre Almeida não tinha como objectivo um retrato fiel da história polaca medieval, tratada como fundo mítico-mitológico de acontecimentos de proveito e exemplo para os lusos. Na aventura cavalheiresca contada no livro XIV do tomo II a Polónia é uma terra de ilusão, de um castelo diabólico, ´´um gracioso encanto´´ (2001, 270), um bosque de enganos. A Polónia, no olhar do nosso oratoriano, seria a pátria da ´´monstruosa fúria da política´´, um pais onde ´´não faz senão soprar a mais deplorável discórdia; não sé entre os vassalos e o soberano; mas entre todos os membros desta indomável monarquia´´ (275).
Do ponto de vista do eixo fundamental da narrativa, o Feliz Independente alinha-se (aliás nem sempre cronologicamente) como uma longa analepse, centrada em torno das aventuras de Misseno, pseudónimo do príncipe polaco de nome Vladislau, filho de Miecislau III, deposto duas vezes do trono da Polónia. Misseno foi uma vez excluído da sucessão, outra despojado do trono, até que ele próprio o recusou, preferindo a solidão e a tranquilidade dos bosques da Silésia, ao turbilhão e intriga das cortes. E enquanto a divina Providência comandava os vaivéns da fortuna, Misseno tinha uma missão especial: difundir junto de todos com quem dialogava, sobretudo face ao conde de Morávia, cunhado de André Rei de Hungria (pai lendário de Santa Isabel, chamada Rainha de Hungria), uma espécie de gramática da felicidade. Essa arte de bem viver segundo o antigo tópico de áurea mediocridade consistia no domínio das paixões e numa espécie de tranquilidade interior. Reprimiam-se, deste modo, os excessos do comportamento (des)humano, permitindo que as situações do questionamento de poder político não conduzissem à violência e ao esquecimento da virtude cristã. Nesse aspecto, o Feliz Independente pode ser lido como o manual de um tiranicida tranquilo, cristão e estóico.
O Feliz Independente realizou uma série de conceitos, cuja possível subversividade política ou ortodoxia religiosa (segundo a respectiva ordem de leitura) encontrou no traje histórico polaco um ditoso disfarce, compreensível, talvez, para os homens viajados e lidos na história europeia. Desbravar o verdadeiro significado de O Feliz Independente, significa saber ler a alusão à partilha regional da Polónia no século XIII (no tempo da história) e à partilha da Polónia entre as três super-potências vizinhas no século XVIII (no tempo da narração) como sinédoque do Portugal nos tempos de Pombal. A dissimulada irreverência de Teodoro de Almeida face ao regime pombalino como a primeira ordem da leitura, entra no âmbito da presente análise e constitui seu objectivo. No nivel geral de interpretação, a obra em questão pertencia ao género das utopias literárias preocupadas com a representação de um herói ideal num sítio ameno, ´´um príncipe tal, que ele só pode fazer toda a felicidade dos estados´´ (277), originando de um sonho congénere da rêverie de Morus, Machiavelli e Doświadczyński.
O desfecho feliz de mil e uma aventuras, a mão da Divina Providência, o regresso a casa de pai em Cracóvia consolaram Misseno e levaram-no ao fim feliz da obra. Pois Misseno se tornou ´´o instrumento da pública felicidade´´ (2001, 438) na Polónia, conforme lhe tinha profetizado o seu avó Boleslau; depois da peregrinação até à Terra Santa, sendo absolvido pelo bispo de Jerusalém, reconciliou-se com Lesko. O imperativo de ´´fazer a si e ao seu povo feliz´´ (431) foi realizado por Misseno/Vladislau em virtude do domínio perfeito das paixões, circunstância indispensável para a completa felicidade de um ser humano e para um bom governo de qualquer país.
A lição do Padre Teodoro de Almeida manda ver nos momentos difíceis e dolorosos da vida humana: a prisão injusta, a ingratidão e a morte a marca da mão divina que, por caminhos espinhosos, conduzia o triste mortal à percepção das leis da Razão natural. Este ponto de vista conciliava a ilustração católica com o iluminismo filosófico, em detrimento do ateísmo e do deísmo e em virtude da Lei eterna, instaurada por Deus. Sendo assim, o único sentido verdadeiro da vida humana segundo o ´´manual´´ em questão seria a tranquilidade de consciência, oriunda da conformação com a mesma Lei, emanada do Ser Supremo, conduzida pela Mão Divina e realizada pela accção da Providência. Os fados e a fortuna jamais a podem apagar. Job – Misseno/Vladislau – Teodoro de Almeida – um brando tiranicida formam um conluio estético-ideológico de densas referências culturais, desafiando o saber encilopédico e a postura ética do leitor, enganando-o ao mesmo tempo (assim como se iludia o censor da época) com a fidelidade religiosa do padre oratoriano. Qual será a nossa leitura da veemente frase, supostamente baseada na boa razão e boa vontade: ´´A mesma lei celeste, que ordena o culto de Deus na curz, manda a obediência aos príncipes no trono; e assaz ultraja a nossa religião, quem ofende as leis da justiça e chega a quebrar os foros da humanidade´´ (Almeida 2001, 122)? Quem ofende quem? Os que não obedecem aos príncipes ofenderiam a lei divina? Ou os que algemam a liberdade dos povos, pondo-a em grilhões? A sólida retórica do Feliz Independente salvaguarda as duas interpetações, sem fazer ressalvar uma clara opção anti-tiranicida, mas sugerindo-a com a conveniência e o decoro da época, que manda acreditar na solução branda, pacífica e cristã dos conflitos segundo a máxima ´´vós dominareis no meu coração; eu seguirei as vossas máximas´´ (2001, 441).
O Feliz Independente meditava sobre a natureza e limites do poder real, examinava a conduta dos reis, verberava prisões injustas, equacionava o perigo da beleza feminina nas cortes com os dilúvios quase bíblicos e procelas inesperadas no espaço bucólico in illo tempore. Teodoro de Almeida tecia alusões, metáforas e figuras de estilo demasiado transparentes para quem havia redigido o texto no exílio e regressara depois da queda em desgraça de Pombal. Sempre, pois, ´´a felicidade do homem deve ser diferente da dos brutos, pois que a sua natureza é tão dissemelhante´´ (Almeida 2001, 110). Por sua vez, a falsa política dos imperadores tem sido ´´o mais terrível escolho´´ (122) para a felicidade universal e o mais santo dever da livre vontade humana. Seria o nobre acto de castigar a injustiça, porque ´´nenhuma vitória será mais agradável ao Deus dos exércitos, do que a cabeça de um ímpio, que ousou levantar a mão contra o seu legítimo soberano, precipitá-lo do trono, fechá-lo numa masmorra (o que se não pode dizer sem horror) (122). O douto oratoriano não tem preconceito ao dizer que para subir ao trono o tirano ´´fez degraus da injustiça, da violência, da false fé e da desumanidade´´ (123) lançando fora quem reinava legitimamente. Os nomes próprios dos protagonistas de outras histórias sobre a tomada de poder não passam de um exemplo. A ideia-mestra da obra em questão é que ´´o crime do tirano intruso clama ao céu por castigo´´ (124) e será, com certeza, desforrado segundo muitas máximas eudemonísticas (por ex. Só o crime é que nos pode fazer infelizes), entre as quais salienta-se a oposição entre o poder leigo e a felicidade espiritual. O tirano não é feliz nem independente, a soberania exclui a felicidade, por isso ser-se um pegureiro de ovelhas seria melhor do que herdar uma coroa. Quem é o rei-pastrano de um coração bem forte e destemido? Quem o tirano feroz? Seria o tirano de Constantinopla à procura de Misseno, na descida aos infernos do Livro V? Ou Lesko a desterar Vladislau de Cracóvia e bani-lo da Polónia perpassada pelas fúrias de ódio, da inveja, da injustiça, mas protegida pelo anjo das ´´celestes esferas´´ do Livro XXIV (e último) da obra? O destino dos tiranos está no Tártaro e dos Missenos nos Campos Elísios. Se os primeiros aprenderem dos segundos as regras de bem governar (sem crimes, violências e lutas fratrícidas) e lugar da reconciliação estava perto, num bosque montanhoso, junto da antiga fronteira da Polónia com a Hungria. Ou nenhures, considerando o facto de que o mapa da Polónia tem mudado consideravelmente através dos séculos o mesmo tivesse sido apagado da carta geográfica da Europa nos anos de 1795-1918.
3. As pinceladas da mitologia polaca em função da filosofia e política
Tratando do ideário filosófico do padre Teodoro de Almeida seria de ressalvar que ´´no longo percurso intelectual de Teodoro de Almeida permanece como fio condutor o desejo de conciliar a filosofia moderna com o catolicismo, opondo-se sempre com entusiasmo e suporte doutrinal coeso ao deísmo, ao materialismo e ao ateísmo´´ (Calafate 2006, 241). Por outras palavras, o progresso da humanidade terá que levar para uma melhor compreensão da obra divina, sendo o universo um espelho através do qual pode alcançar felicidade ´´o coração humano [que] só em Deus é que sossega´´ (Almeida 2001, 74). A perpétua e verdadeira alegria, aconselhada ao espírito, fundamentada na ´´sã teologia e sólida metafísica´´ (2001, 75), como explicada pelas palavras do cavaleiro grego Polidoro, ´´depende da paz e tranquilidade: ora esta não a busqueis nas cortes ou cidades muito populosas´´ [89]. Um estóico providencialismo a a bendita suficiência da vontade humana subjugada à lei divina (de puríssima expressão cristã e católica) pautam o corolário das meditações filosóficas desvendadas pelo romance em foco de análise. De igual importância seria o bom uso da liberdade e a subjugação das paixões à razão divina.
Oficialmente, pela leitura da primeira camada do texto, o Feliz Independente contribui para ´´ o público sossego e o bem da monarquia´´ (Almeida 2001, 183). Lido mais profundamente, desvenda alguns significados de irreverência política, de louvor à liberdade dos povos, de crítica aos tiranos com nomes retirados da história da Polónia, da Bíblia ou da mitologia, inesperadamente universais na época do fim do regime pombalino.
Segundo Teodoro de Almeida, é sempre melhor ganhar o troféu da liberdade do que um reino por tropas; esta conclusão do Livro I relaciona-se com o ideal da felicidade não-belica apregoado n´o Feliz Independente. O homem é sempre livre e livres são as suas acções – ensina-nos o padre oratoriano na obra em questão. O governo das paixões pela razão, a igualdade dos homens (como explicada pela princesa Sofia aos seus filhos falando), o descobrimento da verdade e a procura da perfeição nas artes podem enobrecer o ser humano e levá-lo para felicidade. Estes valores opõem-se à violência de toda a espécie. Seria que o motim na corte polaca de Lesko que teria expulsado Vladislau-Misseno da Polónia antiga e teria feito correr rios de sangue, causando estragos, horrores e maldades (2001, 281) fosse uma metáfora dos agitados tempos pombalinos? Sim, se lermos o Feliz Independente como o intertexto de Les Anecdotes de Pologne (1699) de François-Paulin Dalairac e o ideologema da luta contra o poder autoritário do marquês de Pombal.
Há, porém, outros contextos luso-polacos na obra de Teodoro de Almeida.
As sucessivas embaixadas enviadas a Misseno de Carcóvia uma alusão aos detractores do próprio padre Almeida? Era mais provável do que implicar o Lesko III da Polónia nas guerras contra Carlos Magno (261) e seus cavalheiros. Entre os múltiplos resquícios históricos, o Feliz Independente conserva a memória da Polónia medieval, das primeiras lutas pela confirmação da fé cristá na Europa e ainda da primeira cruzada e da reconquista de Jerusalém por Gotredo de Bulhões, pululando as virtudes cavaleirescas de mão dada com o espírito de contenção e restrição das paixões humanas – pedindo sempre ajuda e conselho ao bom velho pastor Misseno.
Com um remoto fragmento da história da Polónia o douto oratoriano encontrou uma personagem de quem melhor coubesse naquilo que tinha por verdadeira e nova filosofia. O Feliz Independente servirá para realçar a virtude cristã e estóica do herói polaco e fazer circular um modelo comportamental, pautado pelo ideal antibelicista. A obra em questão assumiu então o carácter doutrinário, interventivo, ético, social, moral e religioso. A Polónia n´O Feliz Independente seria tanto um sítio ameno, lugar paradisíaco, viveiro das virtudes, retiro de Misseno como um campo de batalhas fratrícidas na corte de Cracóvia donde o protagonista tinha fugido. A imitação (e a transfiguração criadora) da natureza, o recuso livre a entidades alegóricas, obedecendo a padrões estéticos de antiguidade definem a estruturação literária da prosa poética de Teodoro de Almeida. Na obra em questão, é palpável a polémica discreta (feita às vezes à laia de seguimento) às novelas de cavalaria e o contraponto ideológico às novelas francesas e inglesas modernas difundidas na segunda metade do século XVIII. Com certeza, a obra em questão tinha outras ambições do que O Verdadeiro Método de Estudar (1746) de Luís António Verney: em vez de oferecer à nação portuguesa ´´um sistema pedagógico tão amplo e fechado quanto possível, que servisse para a reforma do ensino, a fim de o equiparar ao que de melhor existia na Europa do tempo´´ (Moisés 2000, 24), situando-se aliás na mesma perspectiva iluminista da ´´Razão divina´´ Teodoro de Almeida escreve um pragmático-fantástico, psicológico e inversosímil manual de felicidade para toda a espécie de homens e mulheres. Segundo este manual, a natureza seria sempre uma ´´Mão de Deus´´. Nesta postura , visível também na Recreação Filosófica, Pedro Calafate viu ´´a abertura do nosso oratoriano à ciência e filosofia modernas´´ (2006, 242), apesar da sua atitude anti-cartesiana e uma discreta reacção contra o racionalismo metafísico do séc. XVII.
O facto de ter escolhido, como o protagonista, um soberano da Polónia medieval podia ser irrelevante ou demasiadamente exótico para os leitores portugueses de hoje, mas pleno de sentidos para os contemporâneos à data publicação de O Feliz Independente, incluindo os censores munidos da memória histórica. Trata-se de que no ano de 1737 o rei polaco Stanisław (Estanislau) Leszczyński se tinha visto obrigado a abandonar o trono da Polónia e a aceitar o ducado da Lorena. Esse ex-rei da Polónia, autor de textos devotos, tornou-se, no contexto francês, um grande difusor da devoção ao Sagrado Coração de Jesus, sobretudo, na dimensão Cristo-Rei, que ajudava a sublinhar a majestade de um poder real verdadeiramente enfraquecido, pois que a Lorena, depois da morte de Leszczyński, passaria para a França. Tido como modelo de príncipe afastado do trono no quadro da guerra de sucessão, Leszczyński trouxe consigo confessores jesuítas e o culto do Coração de Jesus, ligado às Visitandinas, com quem Teodoro de Almeida contactou durante a estadia em França, entre 1769 e 1777 e que ia trazer para Portugal, em 1784. A difusão da referida devoção - tão cara aos círculos jesuítas e oratorianos como hostilizada pelos sectores oficiais do regime pombalino - devia vir de auxílio ao objectivo ideológico latente n´O Feliz Independente. A religião e a política encontram nesta obra um ameno disfarce novelesco; a história da Polónia medieval dissimula o discurso contemporâneo e desdobra-se em exemplos e significados locais.
As vicissitudes deVladislau/Misseno evocam uma situação semelhante do rei Stanisław Leszczyński e torna-se o sinal de polonidade cristã, constituindo uma remota prefiguração (tão longuínqua no espaço e no tempo que era capaz de iludir a censura de todos os tempos!) de um anti-José I ou um anti-Pombal. Uma obra que devia ser lida como crítica à crueldade dos reis e seus ministros prepotentes, à torpeza da intriga das cortes, ao bem-estar de pouca dura dos tiranos. No mundo às avessas de O Feliz Independente ´´o tirano goza (...) do fruto da sua iniquidade, quando o inocente não acha quem o proteja´´ (Almeida 2001, 107). Esta inversão de valores não devia ser eterna, pois há sempre um bom país cristão, chamado Polónia, capaz de combater os tiranos em todos os seus avatares: um Aleixo de Constantinopla, um sultão de Egipto e Palestina ou um outro usurpador. Trata-se de uma terra santa e amiga da paz em virtude da sua situação geopolítica: ´´a Polónia esta sempre com as armas na mão por causa dos prussianos e dos russos´´ (108). É de acrescentar que a obra de Teodoro de Almeida, leitor assíduo de Les Anecdotes de Pologne, da autoria de François-Paulin Dalairac (Paris, 1699) mostra-se sensível aos acontecimentos da Polónia contemporâneos ao tempo da narração. O douto oratoriano vivia pois na época do enfraquecimento político e militar da Polónia que conduziria ao seu desmembramento entre Rússia, Prússia e Alemanha em três partilhas (1772, 1793, 1795) e o apagamento do mapa da Europa por mais de cem anos.
As descrições de batalhas, combates e duelos, a herança da Bíblia e de poemas épicos (palpável em sonhos proféticos, aparecimentos angélicos e libertações, episódios líricos, entidades alegóricas) e do Télemaque de Fenélon, o palpável fundo mítico da antiquíssima história da Pólonia, colocam O Feliz Independente num registo prestigiado de obras de literatura europeia com a qualidade de uma enciclopédia de vários saberes. Na obra de Todoro de Almeida a precariedade da condição humana disfarça-se no eterno debate que tem por tema a superioridade da vida pastoril (num bosque da Polónia) sobre a vida de corte (presumivelmente portuguesa). A voz da narradora intradiegética (a bela Helena, esposa de Aimar, senhor de Cefarea da Síria) servir-nos-á de conclusão: ´´Mas não nos consoleis, Misseno, com pensamentos formosos; ensinai-nos uma doutrina que se possa reduzir a praxe, porquanto de pouco vale uma imaginária felicidade, a quem se revolve no meio de misérias verdadeiras´´ (2001, 310).

The New Idea, that played in the sewing basket and in the embroidering frame, were the translations of the Bíblia Económica (Economical Bible), in which the old virtue and the ancient portuguese language sobbed for the last time, in the arms of Feliz Independente by father Teodoro de Almeida. The novel gave new shapes and skills the hearts of the ladies of Bastos, teaching them what dawn says, what the satin transparencies of the sunset whisper, what should be thought when the tepid fountains murmur, and everything that concerns flowers, breezes and birds.

1. The manual of the calm tyrannicides in the historical- literary focus
O Feliz Independente do Mundo e da Forma ou Arte de Viver Contente em quaesquer Trabalhos da Vida was published for the first time in 1779, in the Royal Typographic Workshop in Lisbon. The author of the work, oratorian priest Teodoro de Almeida (1722-1804), had already edited the first volumes of Recreação Filosófica (booklet with ten volumes, published between 1751 and 1800) and some prayer-books. The name of Teodoro de Almeida will become famous through an intense philosophical, scientific and literary popularization. The frame of interests of father Almeida incorporated the methods of modern philosophy of the French Enlightenment, mixed with the oratorian pedagogic model. The vision of the world unmasked by this philosophy teacher in the Congregation of the do Oratory always reveals the presence of God, “the healthy theology and solid metaphysics”, directing the human spirit to “life in the perpetual happiness that God advised him” (Almeida 2001, 75).
Father Teodoro de Almeida accompanied a politically, religiously and socially complex eighteenth century. He witnessed the first years of pombalin government, suffered with the destruction of the Lisbon on November 1, 1755, was banished to Oporto (1760) by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, after being removed from the court circles, together with other congregates and members of the nobility, expelled to provincial towns or dragged to prisons in the forts and castles of Portugal. We can accept that the direct reasons of the involuntary exiles of the epoch are related, in the first place, with the publication of the regalist treaty of the Superintendent of police, Inácio Ferreira de Souto, De incircunscripta potestate regis (1759) that had not received the approval of the censors of the Ordinary of the Congregation of the Oratory or of the Court, causing a direct intervention of Sebastião José and a fierce discussion with the Great Inquisitor, D. José de Bragança, one of the boys of Palhavã. It appears that Teodoro de Almeida didn’t belong to this group of censors, although it is known that he censured (in 1758) the Compêndio da Admirável Vida da Venerável Madre Maria do Lado, published in Lisbon in 1762. That activity would gain him enemies in the despotic regime of Pombal, even though his vast philosophical and literary work dialogued with the European culture of his time. Simply reading the documents of the time and the processes that excluded oratorians from public life, we verify that the already count of Oeiras didn't hesitate in considering Teodoro de Almeida a disturbing element in relation to the obedience that the Congregation owed the king and the policy developed by the marquis of Pombal.
The familiarity of Almeida with the marquises of Távora, punished with death sentence in January of 1759, or with the “puritans”, in the sense of “clean” blood, Angeja, Óbidos and Castelho-Melhor families, allow the supposition that the oratorian integrated political and cultural groups hostile to Sebastião José. This is why, after eight years spent in Oporto, fearing imprisonment, in 1768, Teodoro de Almeida abandoned Portugal. In Vigo, he hoped to find a boat that would take him to Holland, where already was João Chevalier, another pombalin emigrant, nephew of Luís António Verney. He knew the initial hunger, the cold and animosity, because the black habit of the congregates of S. Filipe de Néry were confused with the cloths of the Jesuits expelled from Portugal (1759). Changing the course of his journey, Almeida reached France, where he stayed for almost ten years, until the death of D. José I and the fall, in shame, of Pombal renewed the will to return. In 1788, after returning to his homeland, he met his old friends again, some of them also recently released from pombalin jails, resumed his task as teacher of philosophy and, finally, restarted to spiritually advise the elements of nobility that again occupied important places in the Portuguese government. He was also engaged in the foundation of the Academy of Sciences (1780) and, essentially, continued writing and publishing. It must be added that in 1758 the author of Recreação Filosófica had been elected member of the Royal Academy of London.
The date of the first edition of Feliz Independente (1779), allows us to suppose that the work had been written during the exile in France, circumstance corroborated by the also oratorian Joaquim Dâmaso, the biographer of Teodoro de Almeida. This work about happiness in life - a central theme of many philosophical, aesthetic, social and political confluences - was made during Pombal´s era, as a consequence of the anti-pombalin opposition and largely read. Thus being, it can be interpreted a critic to an exercise of power that implemented violence over people. This interpretation spread, permitting us to insert O Feliz Independente in a manual of the calm tyrannicides.
In Portugal, the destiny of O Feliz Independente was limited to five editions. The first, already mentioned, was published, in two volumes. The second, of 1786, transcribed in the modern edition by Zulmira of Santos (2001), was corrected by the author and notes and illustrations were added, constituting the matrix of subsequent reeditions, in 1835, 1844 and 1861. Surprisingly, there are several copies of the 1786 edition, object, for sure, of a higher circulation than the one of 1779, that included a picture of Teodoro de Almeida writing, with the date of birth and death. The track of father Teodoro de Almeida can be followed during the whole nineteenth century and beginnings of the twentieth century, even though the opinions of the portuguese critic were not always positive; Camilo Castelo Branco connected O Feliz Independente with the code of the novelistic style and with a soft feminine bucolic poetry, inserting it, in the second volume of Novelas do Minho, in the scope of national literature, advisable and edifying for the feminine public (1971, 10). We can assume that the long novel by Teodoro de Almeida would have been the spiritual pasture of some vaporous girl, adjusted to the imagination frame of Vasco Marramaque, or inserted in Telemachus by Fénelon, browsed absent-mindedly in the hours of leisure in the garden of S. Lázaro in Oporto. In the nineteenth century, O Feliz Independente was read as a work that belonged the old times, impermeable to the “itches of new ideas” (12) and to the alleged degeneration of uses and habits promoted by the electoral system.
In the eighteenth century, the mists of the epic poem in prose not always sustained the old political-social order in Portugal. Poland, in the first times of O Feliz Independente, had already suffered its first division and last king's substitution, Stanislaw August Poniatowski II of the Wettin dynasty of Saxony by the russian, prussian and german regimes. It’s necessary to add that Stanislaw August Poniatowski II’s reign (1764-1772) was an important period for the development of polish literature. Our first modern romance, The Adventures of Mikołaj Doświadczyński (Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki), by bishop Inácio Krasicki's (1735-1801) was written in 1776 and narrates some experimental trips done by a protagonist received in an island called Nipu. That “one more archipelago of literary utopia” (Siewierski 2000, 69), a picture of a country with an ideal civilization is confronted with the reality of the eighteenth century, a “completely degraded and polluted century” (ap. 2000, 69) - as mentioned by bishop Krasicki in the preface of the work. All the charms of Nipu´s island don't compensate the lack of freedom and after many extraordinary adventures both in the two Americas and in Europe, Doświadczyński returns to his birthplace, settles in his parents' village, and introduces reforms to make the farmers happy. A happiness polish style, very well received by the critic of the time for being a description of adventures in distant lands.
How to classify, according to the literary theorization of the eighteenth century, O Feliz Independente? In the Prologue, Teodoro de Almeida admitted having followed the model of the As Adventures of the Telemachus, that Fénelon wrote for the dauphin of France, he revealed the denomination of epic poem in prose, looking for a true hero in the story and laying out the objective of his work as “unkindly taking the readers to the violence and war they should fight against their passions; and to a blind and total deliverance in the arms of divine providence, when it makes us walk over thistles and thorns: a very precious lesson to life’s happiness” (2001, 36). Was the literary and aesthetic objective of father Teodoro de Almeida. to enhance the virtue of the hero, such as Virgil, Tasso and Camões had done in their epic poems, to keep the horacian precept of uniting the useful and the profitable, to exceed in doctrinaire perfection the work of Fénelon written in verse, to adapt it to the portuguese scenery It is surprising, however, that – putting aside the whole controversy around the novel in moralizing prose originated by Telemachus and the aesthetic value of the poetic prose of the portuguese novel - the hero “in whom would virtue shined” (36) was searched for in the history of Poland, “among the Christian princes” (36) from eastern Europe. Moreover, he was capable of illustrating, with his life, “the axioms taken from the Gospel” (36-37).
However, O Feliz Independente by Teodoro de Almeida had a great success in Spain, in several translations (1783, republished in 1784 and 1785; 1788) even arousing imitations, as it happened with the work by Andres Merino Poema. La Muger feliz, dependiente del mundo y de la fortuna. Obra original dedicada à la sereníssima señora Princesa de Asturias, Doña Luisa de Borbon (Madrid, 1786). According to the spanish author, the love for mankind and especially for women that will find in it an example of “virtud y discrecion” adequate to their children's education and sufficient information to learn how to be independent of the world and fortune. There is also a French translation, based on the spanish version, entitled L'Homme Heureux dans toutes les situations de la vie ou Les aventures de Misseno (Paris, 1820). The pattern of Fénelon´s Telemachus and of the convention of the Buildungsroman (that is, of the novel of personal development) were patented by the intrigue that rotates around the experiences and adventures suffered by the characters (the Count of Moravia, his sister Sofia, Vladislaw-Misseno, a polish prince of the 12th century) during the time of development and education in a small chapel in Silesia, heading to spiritual maturity and the happy return to Poland. The ultimate objective of a “happy and independent” man should be a life outside the court of Krakow, in his “retirement and tranquillity, without the obstacles posed by responsibilities” (2001, 441).
Let us still remind that, according to the social and ethical valorisation of the epic style, characters should be of high social strata and many of the treated subjects are connected with the legitimacy and forms of the exercise of power. The imitation (and creative transfiguration) of nature, the frequent refusal of allegorical entities, the epic style miscegenated with the chivalric romance and the novel of personal development define the literary structuring of the poetic prose of the novel that is being analyzed here.
2. Vladislaw/Misseno – “the instrument of public happiness”
The king of Poland, Vladislaw II (1105-1159), the Exiled - the author's spokesperson, whose speech is heard along the narrative, was the firstborn of the five children of polish king Boleslaw III Crooked Mouth (1086-1138) of the dynasty of Piast. Removed from the throne in 1146 by his siblings, the tried (with the help of the Germans) to reconquer power. When those attempts failed, he kept the princedom of Silesia. It is possible that Teodoro de Almeida also knew the vicissitudes of a polish prince Ladislaw III Loripex (1166-1231), who had the same luck as his ancestor, banished from Krakow by the noblemen and also refugee in Silesia - fact mentioned in Book VIII, the last of the first volume of O Feliz Independente. Both princes or a protagonist from Poland, become an heteronym of the homeland in exile and of the disapproval of the exercise of power through crime and violence. Misseno/Vladislaw, the polish protagonist of Teodoro de Almeida “is a man of great enterprises, capable of stirring up half the world” (2001, 361). In the diegetic plot of Almeida's novel the model is a tamer of furies and human passions followed by the great ones of this world, always “with enormous submissiveness” (377). In our perspective, the (un)happy philosopher Misseno standardizes exemplarily a calm tyrannicide. The example of the life and virtues of Misseno offers a “new and singular method (...) for the triumph of sovereigns” (381).
In the time of the narration of O Feliz Independente, the polish territory (formed as nation in 966 with the conversion to Christianity of Miecislaw I in 966) was divided in three parts that would only reunify in the reign of Ladislaw I, the Brief (1306-1333) that put an end to fratricide fights that characterized our 12th and 13th centuries. The country would prosper under the ruling of Casimir III, the Great (1330-1370), that - as referred in an old Polish proverb – “founded Poland on wood and he left it in stone”. The work of father Teodoro de Almeida reveals a good knowledge this period of Poland’s formation:
What can you tell about Piast, the philosopher? About Miecislaw I, about Boleslaw his son, image of a perfect prince? About Casimir his grandson, that was the admiration of his century? What can you tell me about the prince, that today reigns in the throne of Poland that knew how to prefer a good friend to a good kingdom? Do you think they had no passions? Little honour you do them, if for that you put them in the class of true heroes.
(Almeida 2001, 268).
It is clear that father Almeida didn't have as objective a faithful picture of medieval polish history, treated as a mythical-mythological basis of useful events and an example for the portuguese. In the chivalrous adventure of book XIV in volume II, Poland is a land of illusion, of a diabolical castle, “a gracious charm” (2001, 270), a forest of mistakes. Poland, in the perspective of our oratorian, would be the homeland of the “monstrous fury of politics”, a country where “the most deplorable conflicts are always blowing; no only between vassals and sovereign; but among all members of this untamable monarchy” (275).
From the point of view of the fundamental line of the narrative, O Feliz Independente can be seen (but not always chronologically) as a long analepsis, centered around the adventures of Misseno, pseudonym of the polish prince named Vladislaw, son of Miecislaw III, twice removed from the throne of Poland. Misseno was, firstly excluded from the succession line, then robbed of his throne, finally refusing it, preferring the solitude and the peacefulness of the forests of Silesia, to the whirl and intrigue of court. And while the Divine Providence commanded the sways of fortune, Misseno had a special mission: to divulge it among the people he talked to, above all in relation to the count of Moravia, brother-in-law of Andrew, king of Hungary (legendary father of Saint Elizabeth, called Queen of Hungary), and a kind of grammar of happiness. That art of living, well according to the ancient topic of golden mediocrity, consisted in the control of passions and in a kind of interior peacefulness. This way, the excesses of (in) human behaviour were repressed, allowing of disputes for political power not to lead to violence and to the forgetfulness of christian virtue. In this aspect, The Feliz Independente can be read as the manual of a calm, christian and stoical tyrannicide.
O Feliz Independente accomplished a series of concepts, whose possible political subversivity or religious orthodoxy (according to the reading manner) found in the polish historical clothing a blissful disguise, understandable perhaps, to travelled and educated men in european history. To explore the true meaning of O Feliz Independente, means the capability to read the allusion to the regional division of Poland in the 13th century (chronological time) and to the division of Poland among the three neighbouring super-powers in the eighteenth century (narrative time) as a synecdoche of Portugal during Pombal´s era. The dissimulated irreverence of Teodoro de Almeida regarding the pombalin regime as the first order of reading, enters the frame of the present analysis and constitutes its objective. In the general level of interpretation, the work in question belonged to the literary utopia type with the representation of an ideal hero in a quiet place, “such a prince, that only he can make all the happiness of the states” (277), coming from a similar dream to the reverie of Morus, Machiavelli and Doświadczyński.
The happy ending of thousand and one adventures, the hand of Divine Providence, the return to his father's house in Krakow consoled Misseno and took him to the happy ending of the work, for Misseno became “the instrument of public happiness” (2001, 438) in Poland, as it had been prophesied by his grandfather Boleslaw; after the pilgrimage to the Holy Land and being absolved by the bishop of Jerusalem, he made his peace with Lesko. The imperative of “making himself and his people happy” (431) was accomplished by Misseno/Vladislaw due to the perfect domain of passions, indispensable circumstance for a human being's complete happiness and for a good government of any country.
The lesson of father Teodoro de Almeida tells us to look to the difficult and painful moments of human life: unjust imprisonment, ingratitude and death, the mark of the divine hand that, through thorny roads, led the sad mortal to the perception of the laws of natural Reason. This point of view reconciled the catholic illustration with the philosophical enlightenment, putting away atheism and deism and due to the eternal Law, established by God. Thus being, the only true sense of the human life according to the “manual” in question would be the peacefulness of conscience that came from the acceptance of that same Law, emanated by the Supreme Being, driven by the Divine Hand and accomplished by the action of the Providence. Fates and fortune can never erase it. Job - Misseno/Vladislaw - Teodoro de Almeida - a soft tyrannicide form an aesthetic-ideological collusion of dense cultural references, challenging encyclopaedic knowledge and the reader's ethical posture, deceiving him at the same time (as it deceived the censor of the time) with the religious fidelity of the oratorian priest. Which will be our reading of the vehement sentence, supposedly based on good reason and good will: “The same celestial law, that orders the cult of God in the cross, orders the obedience to the princes in the throne; and outrages enough our religion, the one who offends the laws of justice and manages to break privileges of humanity” (Almeida 2001, 122)? Who offends who? The ones that don’t obey the princes would be offending the divine law? Or the ones that handcuff the freedom of the peoples, putting them in chains? The solid rhetoric of O Feliz Independente safeguards the two interpretations, showing a clear anti-tyrannicide option, but suggesting it with the convenience and decorum of the epoch, that commands the belief in the soft, peaceful and christian solution of conflicts according to the maxim “you will dominate my heart; I will follow your maxims” (2001, 441).
O Feliz Independente meditated on the nature and limits of real power, examined the behaviour of kings, censured wrongful arrests, and compared the danger of feminine beauty in court with the almost biblical floods and unexpected storms in the bucolic space in illo tempore. Teodoro de Almeida made allusions, metaphors and figures of speech too transparent for someone who wrote this text in exile and had returned after Pombal´s fall. “The happiness of man must be different from the one of the rudes, for their nature is so unlike” (Almeida 2001, 110). In turn, the false of the emperors has been “the most terrible obstacle” (122) for universal happiness and the most sacred duty of human free will. It would be the noble act of punishing injustice, because “no victory will be more pleasant to the God of armies, than the head of an impious, that dared lift the hand against his legitimate sovereign, removing him from the throne, closing him in a dungeon (which cannot be said without horror) (122). The learned oratorian doesn't have any prejudice in saying that to rise to the throne the tyrant “used the steps of injustice, of violence, of false faith and of inhumanity” (123) throwing away the legitimate ruler. The first names of the protagonists of other stories about the assumption of power are nothing but an example. The main idea of the work in question is that “the crime of the intruding tyrant asks heaven for punishment” (124) and it will be, with certainty, revenged according to many eudemonistic axioms (for example, Only crime can make us unhappy), becoming prominent the opposition between layman power and spiritual happiness. The tyrant is neither happy nor independent; sovereignty excludes happiness. So, being a shepherd would be better than inheriting a crown. Who is the peasant king with a very strong and fearless heart? Who is the ferocious tyrant? Could it be the tyrant from Constantinople in search of Misseno, in the descent to Hell in Book V? Or Lesko expelling Vladislaw from Krakow and banishing him from Poland filled with fits of hatred, with envy, with injustice, but protected by the angel of the “celestial spheres” of Book XXIV (and last) of the work? The tyrants' destiny is in Tartarus and the one of Misseno’s in the Elysian Fields. If the first ones learn from the second the rules of good government (without crimes, violence and fratricide fights) the place of reconciliation will be near, in a mountainous forest, by the old border between Poland and Hungary. Or nowhere, considering the fact that the map of Poland has considerably changed throughout the centuries and almost even disappeared from the geographical map of Europe between 1795 and 1918.
3. The brushstrokes of polish mythology at the service of philosophy and politics
When dealing with father Teodoro de Almeida's philosophical ideary it we should be confirmed that “in the long intellectual route of Teodoro de Almeida the conductive thread is always the desire to reconcile modern philosophy with Catholicism and always opposing deism, materialism with enthusiasm and a coherent doctrinal support and atheism” (Calafate 2006, 241). In other words, humanity's progress will have to lead to a better understanding of the divine work, being the universe a mirror through which we can reach happiness “the human heart [that] only in God quiets down” (Almeida 2001, 74). Perpetual and true happiness, advised to the spirit, based in a “healthy theology and solid metaphysics” (2001, 75), as explained in the words of the Greek nobleman Polidorus, “it depends on peace and tranquillity: but don't look for it in the courts or highly populated cities” [89]. A stoical providencialism and the blessed sufficiency of human will subdued to the divine law (the purest christian and catholic expression) rule the corollary of philosophical meditations unveiled by the novel in question. Of equal importance would be the good use of freedom and subjugation of passions to the divine Reason.
Officially, when we make a first interpretation of the text, o Feliz Independente contributes to “public peace and the good of monarchy” (Almeida 2001, 183). More deeply read, it unmasks some meanings of political irreverence, praises the freedom of peoples and criticizes tyrants with names withdrawn from the history of Poland, of the Bible or mythology, unexpectedly universal at the end of the pombalin regime.
According to Teodoro de Almeida, it is always best to win the trophy of freedom than a kingdom with armies; this conclusion of Book I is connected to the ideal of the non-war happiness divulged in Feliz Independente. Man is always free and free are his actions, teaches the oratorian priest in the work in subject. The control of passions through reason, the equality of man (as explained by princess Sofia to her children), the discovery of truth and the search for perfection in arts can ennoble the human being and lead him to happiness. These values are opposed to all kinds of violence. Is it possible that the mutiny in the polish court of Lesko, that supposedly expelled Vladislaw-Misseno from old Poland and caused terrible blood sheds causing damages, horrors and cruelties (2001, 281) was a metaphor of the agitated pombalin times? Yes, if we read the Feliz Independente as the intertext of Les Anecdotes of Pologne (1699) by François-Paulin Dalairac and the ideologem of the fight against the authoritarian power of the marquis of Pombal.
There are, however, other portuguese-polish contexts in the work of Teodoro de Almeida.
Are the successive embassies sent to Misseno of Krakow an allusion to father Almeida´s own detractors? There is a larger probability than to implicate Lesko III of Poland in the wars against Charles Magne (261) and his noblemen. Among the multiple historical traces, the Feliz Independente preserves the memory of medieval Poland, the first fights for the confirmation of christian faith in Europe, the first crusade and the reconquering of Jerusalem by Gotredo de Bulhões, pullulating the chivalry virtues hand in hand with the spirit of contention and restriction of human passions - always asking the old good shepherd Misseno for help and a piece of advice.
With a remote fragment of the history of Poland, the learned oratorian found a character that best fitted what he considered the true and new philosophy. O Feliz Independente will serve to enhance the christian and stoical virtue of the polish hero and place in circulation a comportamental model, ruled by the antibellicist ideal. The work in subject assumed then the doctrinal, interventive, ethical, social, moral and religious character. In O Feliz Independente, Poland would be a quiet place, almost paradisiacal, nursery of virtues, retreat of Misseno as a field of fratricide battles in the court of Krakow from where the protagonist had fled. The imitation (and the creative transfiguration) of nature, the free refusal of allegorical entities, obeying aesthetic patterns of antiquity define the literary structuring of the poetic prose of Teodoro de Almeida. In the work that is subject of this essay, it is tangible the discreet controversy (sometimes done as a follow up) regarding chivalric novels and the ideological counterpoint to the French and English modern novels spread in the second half of the eighteenth century. In fact, the work had other ambitions than O Verdadeiro Método de Estudar (1746) by Luís António Verney: instead of offering to the Portuguese nation “a pedagogic system as wide and closed as possible, that be used to reform teaching, in order to compare it to the best that existed in Europe” (Moisés 2000, 24), placing itself in fact in the same enlightened perspective of the “divine Reason”, Teodoro de Almeida writes a pragmatic-fantastic, psychological and implausible manual of happiness for all kinds of men and women. According to this manual, nature would always be a “Hand of God”. With this attitude, also visible in Recreação Filosófica, Pedro Calafate saw “the opening of our oratorian to science and modern philosophy” (2006, 242), in spite of his anti-cartesian attitude and a discreet reaction against the metaphysical rationalism of the 17th century.
The fact of having chosen, as protagonist, a sovereign of medieval Poland could seem irrelevant or too exotic for the portuguese readers of today, but made complete sense to at the time of the publication of O Feliz Independente, including the censors supplied with historical memory. It is said that in 1737 polish king Stanislaw Leszczynski had seen forced to abandon the throne of Poland and to accept the dukedom of Lorena. That former king of Poland, author of devoted texts, became, in the french context, a great diffusor of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, above all, in the dimension of Christ-King, that helped to underline the majesty of a truly weakened royal power, because Lorena, after the death of Leszczynski, would pass to France. Considered as model of the removed prince of the throne in the frame of the succession war, Leszczynski brought with him jesuit confessors and the cult of the Heart of Jesus, connected to the visitandins, with whom Teodoro de Almeida made contacted during his stay in France, between 1769 and 1777 and that he would bring to Portugal, in 1784. The diffusion of the referred devotion - so dear to the Jesuits and oratorians and so harassed by the official sectors of the pombalin regime - should come in aid of the latent ideological objective of O Feliz Independente. Religion and politics find in this work a soft novelistic disguise; the history of medieval Poland hides the contemporary speech and unfolds in examples and local meanings.
The vicissitudes of Vladislaw/Misseno evoke a situation similar to the one of king Stanislaw Leszczynski and becomes the sign of polish Christianity, constituting a remote prefiguration (so remote in space and time that was capable of deceiving the censorship of all times!) of an anti-José I or anti-Pombal. A work that should be read as a critic to the cruelty of kings and their despotic prime-ministers, to the vileness of the intrigue in courts and to the short lasting well-being of tyrants. In the inside out world of O Feliz Independente “the tyrant enjoys (...) the fruit of his iniquity, while the innocent doesn't find anyone to protect him” (Almeida 2001, 107). This inversion of values should not be eternal, because there is always a good christian country, called Poland, capable of fighting tyrants in all their forms: an Alexios of Constantinople, a sultan of Egypt or Palestine or any other usurper. It is a sacred and peace loving land because of its geopolitical situation: “Poland is always armed to the teeth because of the prussians and the russians” (108). We must add that the work of Teodoro de Almeida, assiduous reader of Les Anecdotes of Pologne by François-Paulin Dalairac (Paris, 1699) feels moved by the events of contemporary Poland at the time of the narration. The learned oratorian lived, therefore, in the time in which Poland was politically and militarily weakening and that would lead to its dismemberment in three parts between Russia, Prussia and Germany (1772, 1793, and 1795) and its disappearance from the map of Europe for more than a hundred years.
The descriptions of battles, combats and duels, the heritage of the Bible and of epic poems (tangible in prophetic dreams, angelic emergence and liberations, lyrical episodes, allegorical entities) and of Telemachus by Fenelon, the tangible mythical base of the very old history of Poland, place O Feliz Independente in a prestiged collection of works of the european literature considered as an encyclopaedia of several knowledges. In the work of Teodoro de Almeida the precariousness of human condition is disguised by the eternal debate that has as theme the superiority of pastoral life (in a forest of Poland) over life in court (presumably portuguese). The voice of the intradiegetic narrator (beautiful Helena, wife of Aimar, lord of Cefarea of Syria) will be used here as conclusion: “But don't console us, Misseno, with beautiful thoughts; teach us a doctrine that can be reduced to tradition, since imaginary happiness has little value, to the ones who revolve in the middle of true poverty” (2001, 310).
