Source text - English Research carried out on the ceramic industry and on the tourist industry in connection with the MedPot project. Commissioned by the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce As part of the MedPot Project under the EU Transborder Cooperation Programme INTERREG IIA ITALIA- MALTA the following research was carried out. Ceramics in the Maltese Islands by Paul Haber This was to include: A brief history of ceramics in Malta. A descbiption of the number of ceramists and potters in Malta, indicating where these are situated in Malta. The research was to mention the styles in use in Malta, the colours used and main objects produced. It was to describe the raw material used and where it is obtained. Chemicals used were to be mentioned, including paint, and if it is eco-friendly. It was to indicate how many of the producers have sales outlets and how many produce for sale in other outlets and describe these other outlets. It was to also show how many employees in this sector and what is their age group. The Report was to describe what methods are used for producing ceramics and state whether eco-friendly materials are used. The research was to also state the type of machinery used. The report was to mention if there is any particular style which distinguishes Maltese ceramics and if there are any particular markings used. The report was to indicate what percentage of sales are made from factory and if any particular packaging is used. If possible the report was to state whether sales made mainly to tourists, and if so which nationality mainly and if possible the report should also indicate the average price of pieces sold to tourists. Research on Tourism by Misco International Desk Research The following information was to be gathered: 1. The number of tourists coming to Malta per year (2004,2005). 2. The type of tourists: nationality, interests, age groups) 3. Where tourists stay: types of accommodation, including occupancy rates) 4. What means of transport were used by tourists coming to Malta: Air: Scheduled flights, charter. Sea: Catamaran, Ferry 5. How many come in package tours and how many book their own. 6. How many use the internet to travel and for accommodation. 7. Which are the high season and the low season months. 8. How long does the average tourist stay. 9. What is the average cost per tourist per category, per night, according to season. 10. How many hotels have sales outlets. 11. How many are stocked with ceramics. 12. How many cruise liner tourists per month and total per year. 13. How many museums and total attendance, if possible per month too. 14. What sports and activities are available for tourists. 15. How many guided tours and what percentage of tourists take them. 16. How many excursions to Sicily and how many tourists take these excursions. 17. What other tourist attractions are available. A more detailed survey of a number of hotels (circa 20) was to be carried out. Individual questionnaires were to be used for the second part of the tourism survey once hotels are identified. Survey of Ceramic Firms A Survey was also carried out through a questionnaire, on a number of ceramic firms, indicating the type of activity, promotional methods, workforce and type of equipement. This can be testified by the pottery pieces and sherds found scattered on many parts of Malta and Gozo. Neolithic Malta has one of the richest collections from the prehistoric past. The first settlers to leave traces on the Maltese islands came from Sicily in c. 5000 BC. These people were farmers who brought pottery to Malta, and remains of this early period were found at the village of Skorba and Ghar Dalam. A wealth of information about the life of the first settlers could be reconstructed from these remains of highly ornate vessels and figurines representing human or animal forms. Many have been interpreted as representing deity; a more commonly occurring figure is that of a female goddess. Figurines at that time represented a female figure with ample breasts, buttock and clearly indicated genitals. While some examples are sexually ambiguous, many are headless with hands and feet incongruously delicate. These figures from that time are modelled in clay or incised and baked. The cultural beliefs and the evolutions of societies with their gender roles from different period can be interpreted from studies of the pottery vessels and figurines excavated from the various phases of Maltese prehistory. The Skorba phase dating 4,400 BC yielded a large quantity of broken Red Skorba pottery from a shrine found in the field to the east of the east temple. This pottery is made of clay and heavily decorated with red ochre. Red ochre which is a natural mineral consisting of silica and clay produces a red colour due to iron oxide. It is not found in Malta and had to be imported from neighbouring lands, most probably Sicily. The Zebbug phases have very interestingly produced some very abstract figures and very vague references to the human form. Information provided by anthropology and ethnography helps us think about the ways in which people express reality and ritual. The following Ggantija and Saflieni phases (3600 BC) are characterized by funerary and non funerary objects although things found in temples and hypogea share similar characteristics. Red ochre is used in both types with better distribution of colour, with parts of the objects painted and parts unpainted. Yellow and black pigments were found in the Xaghra circle indicating that some figures were painted. More elaborate figures were found with representations of a twin females sitting on a decorated couch with one holding a miniature figure on its lap and the other holding a cup or a jar in its hand. Clay heads with intricate facial detail and varying facial features and expressions, and many human figures in different positions although mostly seated were found from the Xaghra Circle. They mostly show a fine degree of modelling and one is so fine that it might perhaps even be a portrait. This phase also yielded some fine examples of highly polished or burnished pottery. This effect is obtained by vigorously rubbing the leather hard clay with a pebble until sheen is obtained. An interesting figurine which depicts a female figure with pieces of shell inserted in the clay before firing was found at Tarxien Temples. The figurine which is poorly fired may have been pierced in ritual at particular points of the body in magical practises. Along with the different designs pertaining to different period, we see a range of different techniques used in the production of prehistoric pottery pieces, such as engraving, incising, modelling in three dimension, high and low relief, burnishing and painting. This is a clear indication that our ancestors were both imaginative and highly skilled humans. Clay is abundant and man discovered very early that in its plastic state it can be modelled very easily into whatever was required. Most vessels were intended for use as functional utensils although some were quite elaborately decorated showing the enthusiasm of the maker. Figurines, pendants and other decorative items show the artistry along with the craftsmanship. Man learned how to make pottery before he learned how to write. Most probably in ancient times, thousands of years ago man discovered by accident that while making a bonfire that the clay underneath the bonfire was becoming hard and gradually the firing of clay objects begun. We do not have details of the evolution of the firing process since prehistoric times but one can easily tell that the temperature which the clay pieces were fired at varied considerably from the textures and the colour of the natural unpainted body. From the colour of the pots one can tell how the flames hit the pots which were placed on top of each other with dried grass in between and then covered with twigs and dried branches. We know that some extent of skill was employed even in the firing process since the pieces, especially the solid figurines, would not have survived if not fired gradually from a low temperature, rising to a very hot when the clay turns into pottery making it strong enough to have survived down through thousands of years. The fire had to be kept going for many hours, sometimes even days by continuously stoking the flames till the clay turns red hot and then allowing the wares0 to cool slowly when they were ready. We can also tell from the colour, whether the pottery was fired in a built kiln or one which is dug in the earth because the latter produces a darker colour caused by reduction which is the result of lack of oxygen in the flame. Pinto’s Ceramic Factory In 1839, the Duc de Luynes, presented to the world famous Museum of Ceramics, Sevres, France. A majolica bowl said to have been made in Malta This acquisition was made public four years later. Majolica factories in Europe have attracted the eager attention of scholars and collectors for many years but antique majolica from Malta was unheard of. In the diary of Don Gaetano Reboul he noted “The working of Mlatese clay for export has started”. This was during Grand Master Pinto’s second year of his reign. Matteo Poussielgues had obtained a monopoly to manufacture majolica-ware in Malta. Claudio Torquas probably French was the principal ceramist of the enterprise. In Pinto’s letters we meet with interest the following scripts “I received the formula for the manufacture of translucent porcelain”, from another letter “I will be grateful for this favour, as also for details on the method of manufacturing the non-translucent porcelain produced in Marseilles”. The claims to glory amongst European sovereigns included the manufacture of fine porcelain and ceramics and Malta would not be outdone. We hear of fine gifts manufactured in Malta but unfortunately we have only one example of ceramics with the distinctive Pinto mark. Other pieces attributed to other centres could easily have been made in Malta. Pinto factory ended with the French Invasion and the majolica collection we have at the museum is of Italian origin while Pinto’s wanted to follow the French style. The art of ceramics died so completely that in 18886 Dr. Nicola Zammit wrote “Besides domestic and rough utensils in terracotta, of prehistoric shapes and simplicity, done by hand or with the aid of a ladle, today we work on the wheel conduits, pitchers, jars, flower pots and every article in domestic use. Some terracotta vases with elegant bas-releifs worked from moulds are beautiful. But the application of glazes is still in an experimental stage.” Unfortunately we do not have any details of the factories which produced these terracottas. Early 20th Century We only have records that local production in Malta resumed during the 1900s. There were potter’s workshops in Birkirkara near the Ganu windmill, in Gozo by Sacco family and in Zejtun by the Ta’ Sakranobis family. This workshop used local clay from Ghajn Tuffieha and from Tat-Taflija in Gozo which is a place between the villages of Ghasri and Zebbug. Clay was sometimes prepared by drying, pounding into small fragments and sifting. The clay was then soaked and when it becomes soft it would be ready for kneading. First it used to be squashed by foot, than kneaded by hand and finally it was wedged to get a homogenous consistency and to eliminate air completely as air bubbles could lead to breakages. Sometimes grog, sand or even ashes from the kiln were added thus making the clay stronger while at the same time reducing warping, breakages and excessive shrinkage. All local potters had their own methods and highly guarded secrets of the trade. Mikiel Tabone of Zejtun used to get his clay from Gozo. He was also the only Maltese potter who had a machine driven by a blindfolded horse to mix the clay in a wooden box. Very limited information of these potteries are available but we know that the oldest method was that of slab building with the help of a turntable which was made of a wooden disc driven by a tapered pottery roller. Sand was used between the wood and the clay to keep it from sticking and slabs were added and joined with water as required to make up the height of the pot. The pots were than finished off by rubbing a piece of cane or rendered even smoother by rubbing with a pebble (burnishing). This helped to seal the pots and make them impervious while gave them a sheen. Some small pots were pinched, where a hole with a finger was pressed in a ball of clay and the potter continued to pinch until the walls of the pots were thinned to the required thickness. Pinching could only be used for small bowls, pots or oil lamps. Another popular method which is still in use by ceramic artists today was by coiling where clay was rolled into ropes and stuck on a round disc of clay and than fixed one on top of the other to the required shape and size. The coils were than joined filling the gaps between each coil and finishing off with a simple tool or by using the fingers. The method used depended on the type of work that one wanted to make and also on the skill that one had mastered. At around 1900, throwing wheels were introduced in Birkirkara. These consisted of a small wooden disc above the work table and a bigger one above the floor with a rod passing through both by means of a bearing which made the wheels very easy to turn. The bigger wheel was kicked with the foot anti clockwise and it turned the upper wheel while the potter pulled up the clay to form the pots as required. A similar wheel was found at the workshop of Mikiel Tabone in Zejtun where at least two women were employed. Finished work was then put out in the sun till it becomes firm and than it was put away to dry slowly for a least a month or until there was enough work to fill a kiln and fire it. The kilns in the different potteries in Malta, namely in Birkirkara, Zejtun and Gozo were all different in shapes although all were wood fired mainly by brushwood and were made of stone with vaults forming a troll, typical of others found in Mediterranean countries. Pieces of broken pottery and pottery dust were spread on the roof of the kiln to increase insulation. Some air was still allowed to come from between the arches so as not to choke the fire. The pots were built from the floor on stone slabs and down turned pots so as to leave space for the wood to go under the clay pots which were stacked on top of each other starting with the larger pieces at the bottom. Firing started with twigs and dried grass so that the kiln was warmed slowly and than went on to add larger dry branches and pieces of discarded furniture and tree trunks. Apparently there was no chimney in the kiln but smoke escaped through the door and from between the slabs and vaults. Firing took about three days with constant invigilation. Experience taught the potters to gauge the temperature from the colour of the visible pieces of clay. The kiln in Zejtun was a little more complex with a separate firing chamber underneath the kiln for the firewood. This chamber had a stone slab roof with spaces in between. This kiln had a third chamber on top from where one could peep through a hole in the roof of the second chamber to see the pottery being fired. The third room could be reached by means of a small flight of stairs at the side of the kiln. After three days of firing the kiln was set on fire with wood shavings for another day. Mikiel Tabone of the Zejtun pottery had a contract to buy all the shaving from the Malta Drydocks. The pots made in these three potteries were mainly for use, such as storage jars for preserving food like cheese and olives and for carrying water and keeping it cool. Designs were very limited and mostly were inspired by similar items which were previously imported from neighbouring countries. The glazing technique seems to have been forgotten for a number of years especially when it started to get easier to import glazed pottery from neighbouring Italy. Even better results were achieved by burnishing before firing, which is a technique very typical of Maltese pottery. Another technique which was very frequently used is the application of slip which is a coating of a different coloured clay mixed with water. Designs were painted on, in a different coloured slip or engraved and exposing the colour of the clay underneath. Red slip was used to decorate the whitish or yellow clay and vice versa. Designs were very simple made with the fingers or nails. Sacco of Gozo used a comb with a few teeth to engrave designs on the runs and jugs he used to make. Slip decorated items excavated from the Chapel of Hal Millieri, were analysed by Dr. D.P.S. Peacock and it appears that they were Maltese pots dating back to the Middle Ages. Other sherds dating to the Middle Ages from the same chapel were glazed but it is not known but not excluded that they were made in Malta. The Maltese potters tried to make their pottery not only functional but also beautiful to look at. They started by smoothening their wares with water which did not only make the pots smoother but also sealed the pores to make them impervious. On the same line of the early three potteries, but much later we find another workshop in a Cave in Rabat run by Peter Borg or better known as Peter the Potter. He had learned throwing from some Arabs who at the time were working in Birkirkara, Malta. He had an accident with a motor bike, and thought that a sedentary career at the wheel was the right one for him He was granted the first permit to manufacture pottery in 1938 although he might have been doing some work unofficially long before that. From the very beginning he was familiar with the use of glaze but he used it very little since it was too expensive to buy. The small amount available to him was reserved for special clients since for him glaze was as precious as gold. His first work consisted of terracotta jugs, jars, urns and other types of vessels made out of local clay which was mostly dug from Ghajn Tuffieha. The clay was used as it was without any preparation. The dry and dirty surface clay was scraped, and cleaner plastic clay was excavated and thrown on a kick wheel. Peter the Potter built a wood fired kiln himself and he and his sons after him continued to use the same kiln until the 1970s which was about the same time when they stopped using local clay which is a pity since in Malta clay can produce very warm yellow and reddish colour with an interesting variation of hues. The kiln is a little more practical than those of the 1920s. It consists of three chambers all in the shape of a dome, the bottom one for the wood fire with ventilators for the heat to pass through for the second chamber where the pots are stacked and the third one which was added later to protect the firing from draught which interfered with the smooth cycle of the firing. Decorative figurines were made in Malta in 1946 by a Tunisian Maltese man called Toni tal-Gibs (Toni of the plaster) who started off by making his own plaster of paris using a donkey to crush the plaster stone. He used to sell it to the government for use in its hospitals during World War II. He had some plaster moulds of statues which it is assumed he brought from Tunis. At first he used to produce them is plaster but later he started to produce them in clay up till the beginning of 1960s. Pottery Training in Malta The School of Art, which was set up in Malta by Chev. Vincent Bonello who was then the Director of Museums, brought Dr. F. Chiardola from Italy to teach ceramics to students attending the evening classes. Chiardola remained in Malta for a very short time and all he did was painting on tiles. In the private home of Judge Giovanni Bonello there is a tile dating back to 1927 which is the existing proof of the first glazed artistic item which was produced in Malta at that time. It has a black Art Neaveau design by Chiardola and it has a dedication written on it as the first glazed item produced at the Malta School of Art. There is a reproduction of a painting of St. Paul painted on tiles at the entrance to Mdina which is signed by Chiardola. Castelletti Ceramics Factory In the meantime at Ta’ Qali a ceramics factory by the Castelletti family had been set up. It was quite a big set up adjoining to the family owned villa where many ornate pots, wall plaques and Madonnas with large dimensions were produced. Examples of works from this factory can still be seen around the Maltese Islands especially in Mdina and Valletta. Typical items were the monochrome white and blue glazed Madonnas and figurines. One interesting thing that is known about this factory is that some Italian and a German crraftsman were employed. They all left Malta with the onset of war while Contino Castelletti died during the war. We know that sometimes Ganni Vella used to paint for Castelletti and that the factory used to fire some work for Emvin Cremona and Ganni Vella. Mabel Strickland had helped Contino Castelletti to buy the necessary equipment when he set up the pottery and when during the mid 30s the Castellettis had to move out of Ta’ Qali in preparation for the war, most of the moulds were stored in a cave at Villa Bologna which was the residence the Strickland family. War struck and during this time no more mention of ceramics was heard. Ceramika Maltija- First Maltese Ceramists Mabel Strickland, who had a lace and textile factory in Rabat, and Contino Castelletti were friends and members of the same local craftmen association MIA (Malta Industries Association) and in his honour she felt it her duty to continue his ceramics work. When she applied for the permit to start a pottery at Villa Bologna, her application was refused for 5 years but after that she was granted the permit in about 1952. Cecilia de Trafford, Mabel Strickland’s daughter applied to the School of Art asking for a recommendation of a promising artist for employment in the ceramics factory which she was setting up in a part of Villa Bologna in Attard with the help of UK painter and ceramist Mr. Charles Bone FRBS., A.R.C.A..and his wife Sheila Mitchell FRBS, A.R.C.A. a sculptress of mostly religious items. Mr. Bone was an important artist at the time and he was seen in a discussion programme on art on the BBC. John Bonnici was recommended by Vincent Apap and George Borg and the Bones went to visit him at his place of work where he was sculpting a big Madonna in a private garden. They were impressed by what he was doing and on his first visit to the factory he started his work. His first job was to help Mr. Bones build a fuel kiln while Sheila was making a low relief of the Madonna of Caraffa. Bonnici’s first design for ceramics was Our Lady of Good Health. Many more followed. After the summer holidays, after four months of training in the factory with Mr. Bone Bonnici was left on his own at the factory. Ms. De Trafford brought Carmelo Gerada to help Bonnici. Gerada was previously employed at De. Trafford’s lace and weaving factory making designs for lace. This tendency remained and typical of Ceramika Maltija are the sgraffito stain lace designs on pottery still being produced today. He also started to paint lettering for name signs. Another two workers Censina and Vitorin were employed at Ceramika Maltija. Sometimes Mr. Bone used to bring students from his college in England for a work experience in Malta. At times they remained here for a whole year and some left their marks in the designs they created while in Malta. Bonnici continued modelling and working on Bone’s recipes for glazes and stains which at that time were all factory mixed. In the meantime clay was imported from England since impurities in local clay and lack of cleaning and clay preparing machinery was non existent in Malta. Consequently local clay was not suitable for glazing. At some time Censu Apap, one of our foremost sculptures was asked to make some designs for Ceramika Maltija and one design that still remains is that of a donkey. Guzeppi Vella from Mellieha was employed and he immediately took to the wheel and soon became a very proficient thrower making big urns and pots on a kick wheel. But unfortunately he immigrated to Australia. 1953 was marked by Her Majesty’s Queen Elizabeth visit to Malta and Ceramika Maltija was very busy making souvenir items to commemorate this visit. Ashtrays, mugs and other items with transfers imported from England, local scenes and a bust of the queen specially modelled by John Bonnici for the occasion took pride of the place at the souvenir shop De Traffords had at the Grand \|Hotel Phoenicia, which at the time was the very best hotel there was in Malta. The ceramic bust was the best seller especially with British tourists who at that time were very numerous. At this time Cecilia de Trafford decided to send John Bonnici to study and train in Stoke-on-Trent. Going to England through Italy John accompanied by the present director of the same pottery now under the name of Ceramika Seracina, Gerald the Traffford Cecilia’s son, went to visit ceramics factories in Firenze and Faenza such as Ginori for sanitary and tableware, Bertolotti in Milan for figurines and later to Paris spending a month absorbing the processes used in production. Till 1955 the kilns being used were mostly powered by diesel. Bonnici proceeded to Stoke for a year of tuition but was called back to Malta to replace some worn moulds before the end of the year. While in Malta he received the good news that he was awarded a scholarship of four years in Rome studying sculpture and ceramics. While in Rome the De Traffords visited John Bonnici at his college and were fascinated with the bright coloured glazes they were using in Italy. While they were there they placed an order for clay and glazes and switched from English materials to Italian which did not please Mr. Bone who kept coming to Malta and designing work for Ceramika Maltija. Some of his designs were religious plaques and traditional Maltese figurines such as a lady with a Faldetta and a man peeling prickly pears. John Bonnici was in Italy between 1954 and 1958, showing his first ceramic sculptures in 1955 at the Malta Trade fair Exhibition which was than held in San Anton Gardens. A separate pavilion was set up for Fine Arts with artists such as Frank Portelli, Emvin Cremona and Censu Apap participating. Apart from his artistic pieces Bonnici had his commercial works in the Ceramika Maltija’s pavilion. During John Bonnici’s final years of study, he was asked to plan the setting up of a pottery at the Technical School in Paola for boys and another in Maria Assunta for girls. In Paola, in 1958 there were three electric kilns with other equipment and materials for use with the daytime students and also for evening classes. Ceramics was introduced for the first time as part of the syllabus in Government Schools. In 1959 -60 the first students started the course leading to O level with 3-5 female students from the Sacred Heart School, one of them being one the sisters. In 1974-1975 a commonwealth expert was in Malta to open a Trade School at Targa Gap specializing in crafts such as ceramics, stone, jewellery and metal. John Bonnici was called to take charge of the new school and in 1976 was appointed head with his appointment backdated from 1974. Ceramika Maltija used to ask for the best students from the Government School of Art and we know that many Maltese artists spent some time working there after John Bonnici. Boys with an artistic tendency had no opportunity to work in related jobs except at Ceramika Maltija and consequently most people with a tendency towards painting or sculpture were sent to work there. We know that sculptor Toni Agius, Sunny Gatt who later worked in other potteries and now has his own workshop Master Plaster in Ta’ Qali, Joe Genovese who set up another small factory Ceramart Ltd in Ta’ Qali producing original housenames and religious items, Aldo Cremona who is Emvin Cremona’s brother and who is still working there, Vince Camilleri who is now the chief painter at Alka Ceramics in Ta’ Qali are all ex employees from Ceramika Maltija which for a number of years was the only pottery in Malta. Most of these artists started to work at Ceramika Maltija as very young boys getting experience, with some going on to open their own workshops or are still working in the trade till the present day. Other important artists who spent time working there were the late Joseph Genuis, painter Twanny Darmanin, ceramist Tony Briffa who used to teach pottery but has recently immigrated to Belgium amongst others. Gabriel Caruana and Neville Ferry who are now two of our leading ceramic artists were also frequent visitors to Ceramika Maltija which served as a spring board for the 20th century ceramics scene in Malta. Beautiful designs for Madonnas were made by Joseph Galea of Rabat, and one off murals were commissioned from painter Frank Portelli with an important one being a mural ‘Malta Industries’ depicting various crafts in Malta such as weavers and throwers Freddie Spiteri had a very particular style in a different technique which was painting with overgraze which is applied on items which have already been glaze fired. His speciality was fish panels. A Tunisian worker at Ceramika Maltija was ‘Hliefa’ who modelled some items such as the Rooster, the artichoke and a pineapple lamp which is still popular now. Another artist Joe Sultana an expert painter of Maltese flora used to work there and is still doing some part time work for Ceramika Seracina. Other artist employees were Franco Cefai and Alfred Fenech. Sgraffito is also very typical of Ceramika Maltija pottery. Lacy designs on green ware (unfired pottery) to which under glaze is applied are still very popular with tourists today. The original idea was by Gerada Silkscreen was also very much used on tiles and wall panel. The outline was silk screened and colour was filled in by hand brushing. Bristow Potteries/Caqqufa-Potterware In 1960 a British company opened Bristow Potteries in Kordin. As employees they took students from the Paola Technical School with employees such as John Vella who later founded Potterware Ltd. While the style of Ceramika Maltija which for many years dominated the scene as the Maltese traditional ceramics, was essentially Mediterranean - very similar to Italian traditional styles, Bristow Potteries introduced an English style which found its place in Malta very easily since at the time Malta was still under British rule with many English residents and tourists visiting Malta throughout the year. Today Bristow Potteries owned by four Grima brothers produce mainly hand painted items and some modern ceramics. So the four main potteries of the 60s in Malta had different styles with Ceramika Seracina producing a Mediterranean style, mainly dominated with hand painted ceramics, Bristow a British style with crockery and colours very similar to what was being done in England at the time, Peter the Potter was still doing the unglazed pots and urns which remained very popular for the local market, while Potterware which was than called Caqqufa started off in 1973 doing the wheel thrown pots and gradually introduced a little of all the styles of the others. Malta adopted the various styles as its own and adapted them to the demand of both the local market and the tourists visiting the islands. As time went by potteries crossed their line of production according to the demand of clients and lost their individuality which was sacrificed to the satisfaction of the market. The only one to keep doing what it started many years ago is Ceramika Seracina but unfortunately throughout the years it lacked the injection of new blood and is still producing the same designs it was doing many years ago. It is a pity that an establishment which has such a fine history and which started off so well breeding many generations of potters, is in danger of being completely ousted by much more aggressive competitors who keep changing their production in line with the time and the demand of the moment. Ceramics in Education - the early years In the meantime while pottery was still being taught at the Paola Technical School and Maria Assunta the Education Department needed more qualified teachers to teach the subject. In the late 1950 Miss Mortimer the Education Director of the time brought a teacher from UK Ms. Molly Winterburn teacher and author of “A Handbook of Ceramics“ to conduct a pottery course for art teachers. Many teachers attended but one teacher Paul Haber who had been a student at the School of Art in the sculpture class under sculptors George Borg and Vincent Apap took to pottery immediately and never looked back. Soon after his first course in Malta he left the island on study leave to further his studies in the subject at the Camberwell College of Arts in London, where he remained for two years. He returned to his teaching position but this time teaching pottery in secondary schools. Later he was awarded a four year scholarship by the Government of Malta to specialize in ceramics by which time there was no one in Malta who had as yet specialized in the subject. The first year of his studies was at Hornsey College of Arts where he gained experience in different arts and crafts, trying his hand at different mediums while at the same time he built a portfolio good enough to be accepted in the College he wanted to go to and which was the best place to study ceramics in the U.K. In fact in 1972 he was one of the limited 14 students to be accepted at the Central College of Arts and Design in London to start the three year degree course in Ceramics. The College had excellent facilitates and the best lecturers in the UK. Some of the best known ceramic artists in England were his lecturers. During his course Paul experimented and studied all the uses and techniques which could possibly be used in ceramics, apart from the chemistry and composition of different clays and glazes. Work experience was at Stoke-on-Trent with big companies such as Wedgwood and Spode. In England he made intensive studies of Maltese local clay and a dissertation on pre-historic Maltese pottery. At the end of the course he was awarded The College diploma for his outstanding achievement, along with the B.A. (Hons) degree in ceramics. One of the works exhibited at the graduation exhibition was acquired by The Wedgewood Company for their collection. Paul returned to Malta and for some time he held various teaching jobs in government schools. Later he was called by the Department of Industry to act as an understudy of a United Nations (UNIDO) Ceramics Expert who at the time was posted in Malta on a UNIDO project. Alka Ceramics/Ceramart/Tafal Ceramics In 1980 Paul Haber opened his own pottery Alka Ceramics Ltd and was the first to start production on a larger scale exporting decorative contemporary ceramics by container loads to America, Canada and Northern Europe. All he produced was taken up by the American market for about ten years but the increase in Maltese wages and the influx of cheap Asian ceramics in North America stopped Maltese ceramics from being competitive any longer. Slowly but surely the line of production and the designs which were all Paul’s original models changed to suit the demands of the local markets especially geared for interior decoration in hotels and other public places. In 1995 Paul Haber bought Ceramart Ltd. which was a small factory set up by Joe Genovese. One of the employees of Alka Ceramics Joseph Mizzi started his own workshop also at the Crafts Village where with the exception of Ceramika Seracina all the pottery factories are situated. The Pottery Barn run by Mr. and Mrs. Formosa is the only one found in Gozo. They trained in Canada and now specialize in hand built cerami Studio ceramics was another small pottery which closed down about five years ago. The Pot studio is more of a school than a factory is run by Julie Apap. She produces her own individual pots and some artistic ceramics. Materials and Equipment All ceramics factories in Malta use imported clay from Italy and England. Glazes used in factories are also commercially prepared selections from the same Italian and English manufacturers while few artists make their own glazes from imported raw material. Many different types of clay are used such as stoneware, red, crank, grogged clay, red terracotta earthenware from Italy and high firing from England, semi-porcelain and porcelain. Equipment such as kiln, wheels, blundgers and pug mills are imported from Italy and England although the origins are sometimes from other far away countries such as Australia. Ceramics as an Art Paul Haber managed to combine the commercial aspect of ceramics with the highly individual expressions of an artist in ceramics. During the 1960 ceramic art attained equality of status with other traditional art forms apart from remaining as always an esteemed craft. In collective exhibitions one started to come across handsome examples of ceramic art with the chief pioneer practitioners being Gabriel Caruana with his free ranging pieces and the late Toni Pace with a more figurative classical approach. John Bonnici continued to make ceramics, as did for some time Joe Casha and Neville Ferry who like Haber left the island to specialize in ceramics and remained in England for many years. An exhibition of Maltese ceramics held in 1990 Ceramica Malta ’90 although not exhaustive, was quite comprehensive and it included works by Gabriel Caruana, Paul Haber, Victor Spiteri, Paul Scerri, Sina Farrugia and Anna Ciavola and her son Mark. Ceramic art in Malta is a free ranging fantasy and lyrical approach reminiscent of the poetic style of the Faenza school but in a rich stream of inventiveness and creativity that makes Malta proud of this wealth of healthy and vigourous talent. Many of the younger generation of ceramic artists started their training in Malta at the Targa Gap School for Craftsman and the dominating influence of Gabriel Caruana who ran the classes for a long time can be strongly felt. Ceramic and Pottery Education - today Pottery is taught in a number of schools as part of the school curriculum, dedicating a few hours per week. The schools which teach it on this basis are as follows: Government Schools St Benedict, Liceo Mikiel Anton Vassalli, Maria Regina, Maria Assunta, St Tereza, Verdala, Saint Hurst, Mtarfa, Liceo (Pieta), St Patricks. School of Art (Gozo). Rehabilitation/Care Facilities Corradino Correctional Facility, Dar Tal-Providenza, Mount Carmel, Dar il-Kaptan. Private Schools Sacred Heart, Verdala International, San Anton, San Andrea, St Edwards, St Dorothy. The only school which teaches the subject on a full time basis, although also on a part-time basis through Evening Classes is the MCAST at Targa Gap. No fees are paid for the full time courses and the nominal fee which used to be charged for evening classes is now being sponsored by the European Union. Other subject which are sponsored along with ceramics are filigree and lace. Recently, many more ceramic artists have emerged through classes held by various potters like Julie Apap, Zell Osborne, Charles Sammut, Sina Farrugia, Anna Ciavola, George Muscat , Kenneth Grima and Paul Haber with the last three engaged as lecturers at the Mcast which is the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology where courses for a National Diploma in Ceramics are being held. The students are very numerous, enthusiastic and very creative. Private Tuition A number of ceramists teach ceramics and pottery to individuals. The normal cost is about Lm3 (Euro7.14 ) an hour including materials or Lm2.25 (Euro5.35 ) excluding cost of materials. Lessons usually take three hours and courses usually run for nine weeks with lessons once a week. Other private classes are held all year round with two hour workshops at a cost between Lm 2.50 and Lm4 per session excluding material. Imported clay, tools and equipment are easily available from stock at Alka Ceramics in Ta' Qali who also supplies schools and other clients with raw material, equipment, aftersales service, spare parts and what is most important free consultancy regarding the complex production of ceramics as well as regards the kilns and other equipment . Production Today Commercially the Maltese potters are producing mostly slip cast items for the tourist trade, thrown pieces such as lamps and urns especially for gardens, house names for the local market, stoneware items with British influence in style, hand painted work similar to majolica, earthenware souvenirs and giveaways with the occasional commission work such as trophies, murals and corporate gifts. Ceramic Factories/Workshops The main three factories producing ceramics in Malta are all situated at the Crafts Village in Ta' Qali which is an ex airforce base situated below the Old City of Mdina. In fact some of the workshops in the Crafts Village are still air force barracks in the form of nissen huts. Although historic, dating to the last world war, due to the poor insulation of the metal sheets they are made of, they are not practical as workshops being too hot in the summer months and very cold in winter. The government plans to demolish the whole village and build it again in the form of a traditional Maltese village with streets and piazzas and uniform buildings. Many tourists come to the Crafts Village but unfortunately most come on guided tours organized by tour operators and are not allowed to roam the village freely. They have the visits planned beforehand and take the tourists only to the factories with whom they have special arrangements. In a couple of factories tourist are allowed to visit the factories and watch the artisans at work, while in another you can find a painter doing majolica or other handpainting in the shop itself. The factories at Ta' Qali open only during working hours and close in the evening during normal shop hours. They also remain closed during the weekend. At the Crafts Village most of the factory shops sell many other itmes apart from what they produce, which is a pity because many shops have the same items. Unfotunately some even sell imported items some which are made especially for the Maltese market to be sold as a souvenir of Malta. Those who display their own product are much more interesting to visit but they are only a few such shops. Packging and Pricing Although pricing usually depends on the amount of hand work involved in an item, the market is the best dictator of the price. and compared to similar work in foreign countries our ceramics is relatively cheap, when one considers the work and expenses involved and the fact that we do not have any raw material of our own. In Malta you cannot afford to put the prices up because if the items are expensive by local standard nobody will buy and we do not get enough good quality tourists to be able to afford to depend on tourism. The few who are tourism oriented and have special arrangements with tour operators put their prices up and also sell to shops in tourist areas, which shops demand up to fifty per cent of the selling price as commission. Souvenirs shops all around the island and also hotel shops, sell mostly imported souvenir items with a few local craft items in between but there is not a single shop on the whole island which specializes in Malta made crafts. The Malta Craft Council has its own show place where only Maltese crafts are displayed, in a very central area in Valletta but it is a pity that it is not a craft shop but just a show place. Packaging depends on the individual factory, with few shops making display boxes of their own because the market is small and usually Maltese ceramic factories have such a wide range of items that it is impossible to box them all. Boxes are made in Malta but the minimum quantity is too large for our small market. Maltese ceramists have never got together in any initiative due to the proximity and the size of the country where all people can compare products and prices and their clients are the same people thus making competition more rife with each ceramist vying for the same work. Nobody has a safe niche market where to operate. Environmental Impact The health Department in Malta issues strict rules about safety and environmental impact. All raw materials must conform to strict regulations and certain chemicals like lead, litharge and other dangerous materials are not permitted to be used or are used only under strict conditions. For this reason, the ceramic industry does not pose any serious danger to the environment. In the local ceramic industry the waste consists mainly of small quantities of broken ware which can easily be crushed into grog and mixed with clay or used in the restoration and building industry. Styles in Ceramics The style of Maltese ceramics is highly influenced by all who dominated the islands, by foreign potters who opened shop or worked for some time in Malta, by returned immigrants who brought with them the influences of the countries they emigrated to and by the demands of tourist mainly from UK for whom the sales of most of our ceramics were targeted. Finally our ceramics is influenced by the styles picked from the various foreign colleges and workshops where most of our artists have studied and trained, namely from various cities and Italy and the UK although some influence from America, Canada and Australia are not amiss. From a commercial point of view our ceramics are a mixture of modern and traditional pieces with very limited originality. Efforts by the individual potters to better the situation do not yield the deserving appreciation neither by the general public in terms of sales nor by the government in terms of craft preservation and financial aid. Equipment is very expensive and raw material has to be imported, fuel and electricity are a weight potters have to bear on their own and importation especially from China and Asian countries does not help the situation at all, but we as a people are very resourceful and against all odds we continue to fight, we continue to renew ourselves to the markets’ needs but more aggressively we continue to work with a passion only a craftsman can display, working long hours, being creative and producing a wider range of items than one would find in any pottery in Europe, if not in the world. La ceramica nelle isole maltesi di Paul Haber Che include: Una breve storia dell’arte della ceramica a Malta. Una descrizione del numero dei ceramisti e vasai a Malta, e del luogo dove operano a Malta. La ricerca intende anche citare gli stili e i colori utilizzati, nonché i principali oggetti prodotti a Malta. Intende descrivere i materiali utilizzati e dove si ottengono. Saranno menzionati i prodotti chimici utilizzati, inclusa la vernice, e la loro compatibilità ambientale. Sarà indicato anche quanti produttori possiedono dei punti vendita e quanti prodotti sono destinati alla vendita presso altri punti vendita, e si descriveranno questi ultimi. È stata condotta una ricerca dettagliata su un campione di hotel (circa 20). Dopo aver identificato gli hotel, per la seconda parte di questa ricerca turistica, sono stati utilizzati questionari individuali. Indagine sulle aziende ceramiche È stata anche condotta un’indagine attraverso questionari su un numero di aziende ceramiche, indicando il tipo di attività, i metodi promozionali, la forza lavoro e il tipo di attrezzature utilizzate. Queste informazioni sono state inserite in un data base e sono state trasmesse agli associati italiani. Le testimonianze di questo sono dei ritrovamenti di vasellame e cocci in molte parti di Malta e Gozo. All’epoca Neolitica di Malta appartiene una delle più ricche collezioni di tutta la Preistoria. I primi abitanti a lasciare tracce sulle isole maltesi arrivarono dalla Sicilia nel 5000 a.C. I primi abitanti erano dei contadini, che portarono a Malta la ceramica. Resti di questo periodo sono stati trovati nei villaggi di Skorba e Ghar Dalam. Da questi resti, tra cui recipienti ricchi di decorazioni e figurine che riproducono forme umane e animali, si ricavano moltissime informazioni sui primi abitanti. Molte figurine sono state interpretate come rappresentazioni della divinità: la figura più comune è quella di una divinità femminile. A quel tempo, le figurine dipingevano una figura femminile dal petto e natiche abbondanti, e con i genitali ben in vista. Se alcuni esempi sono sessualmente ambigui, molti sono invece senza testa, con mani e piedi molto sottili. Le figurine erano modellate nell’argilla o incise, e, in seguito, cotte in forni. Le credenze culturali e le evoluzioni sociali, con i ruoli sessuali assunti nei differenti periodi, possono essere interpretati attraverso gli studi condotti sulle ceramiche e sulle figurine appartenenti alle varie fasi Preistoriche di Malta. La fase Skorba risale al 4.400 a.C., e ci ha lasciato una grande quantità di cocci di ceramiche rosse Skorba, da un altare trovato nel campo ad est del tempio orientale. Queste ceramiche sono di argilla e sono ricche di decorazioni rosso ocra. Il rosso ocra è un minerale naturale fatto di silicio e argilla, che produce un colore rosso a causa dell’ossido di ferro. Il minerale non era presente a Malta e fu importato dalle terre vicine, molto probabilmente dalla Sicilia. Le fasi Zebbug sono molto interessanti perchè hanno prodotto alcune figure astratte e alcuni vaghi riferimenti alla figura umana. Le informazioni fornite dall’antropologia e dall’etnografia ci aiutano a comprendere il modo in cui le popolazioni esprimevano la loro realtà e ritualità. Le fasi seguenti, Ggantija e Saflieni, (3600 a.C.) sono caratterizzate da oggetti funerari e non funerari, sebbene alcuni oggetti trovati nei templi e sotterranei abbiano caratteristiche simili. Il rosso ocra è utilizzato nei due tipi di oggetti, con una migliore distribuzione del colore. Alcune parti dell’oggetto sono dipinte, mentre altre no. Pigmenti gialli e neri furono ritrovati nel cerchio Xaghra, indicando che alcune figure erano dipinte. Sono state ritrovate anche figure più elaborate: una raffigurazione di donne gemelle sedute su una poltrona decorata, una delle due figure tiene in grembo una figura in miniatura, mentre l’altra tiene in mano un vaso o una tazza. Sempre nel cerchio di Xaghra sono state trovate teste in argilla, con volti ricchi di dettagli e una raffigurazione delle caratteristiche facciali e delle espressioni, oltre a molte figure umane in diverse posizioni, di cui la maggior parte sedute. Questi oggetti mostrano un livello di modellazione molto elevato, e una delle figure è talmente accurata da farci pensare si tratti di un ritratto. In questa fase furono prodotti anche alcuni esempi di ceramiche lucidate e brunite. Questo effetto si otteneva sfregando vigorosamente il duro strato di argilla con un ciottolo, fino ad ottenere la lucentezza. Una figurina interessante, che rappresenta una figura femminile, con pezzi di conchiglia inseriti nell’argilla prima della cottura, è stata trovata preso i templi di Tarxien. La figurina, poco cotta, potrebbe essere stata punzecchiata in particolari punti del corpo durante un rituale di pratiche magiche. Oltre ai diversi stili appartenenti a diversi periodi, si notano una serie di tecniche differenti utilizzate nella produzione di oggetti ceramici preistorici, come l'intaglio, l'incisione, la modellatura in tre dimensioni, l'alto e basso rilievo, la brunitura e la pittura. Si tratta di un chiaro segno che i nostri predecessori erano molto creativi, e avevano grandi abilità artigiane. L’argilla abbonda in natura, e l’uomo scoprì molto presto che, allo stato plastico, può essere modellata con facilità in qualsiasi tipo di oggetto. La maggior parte dei recipienti furono creati per essere utilizzati per scopi pratici, ma alcuni sono ricchi di elaborate decorazioni e mostrano la creatività dell’artista. Le figurine, i pendenti e gli altri oggetti decorativi evidenziano l’arte e l’abilità dell’artista. L’uomo imparò prima a lavorare la ceramica che a scrivere. Molto probabilmente in tempi antichi, migliaia di anni fa, l’uomo scoprì, per caso durante un falò, che l’argilla tra le fiamme diveniva dura e poco a poco iniziò a cuocere gli oggetti. Non abbiamo notizie dell’evoluzione del processo di cottura durante la preistoria, ma si può semplicemente dire che le temperature di cottura dell’argilla erano molto varie a seconda del colore e della texture degli oggetti naturali e non dipinti. Dal colore della ceramica è possibile stabilire il modo in cui la fiamma ha colpito l’oggetto. Gli oggetti erano posizionati uno sopra l’altro, con uno strato di erba secca nel mezzo, e infine erano coperti con ramoscelli e rami secchi. Sappiamo che alcuni gradi di abilità furono impiegati anche nel processo di cottura poiché gli oggetti, specialmente le figurine storiche, non sarebbero sopravvissute se non fossero state cotte gradualmente a bassa temperatura, fino ad una temperatura molto elevata che trasforma l’argilla in ceramica così resistente da sopravvivere per migliaia di anni. Il fuoco doveva essere tenuto acceso per molte ore, a volte per giorni: gli artigiani dovevano continuare ad alimentare la fiamma fino a quando l’argilla diveniva rossa, poi la raffreddavano lentamente quando era pronta. Basandoci sul colore possiamo anche sapere se la ceramica era stata cotta in un forno costruito o in uno scavato nella terra; infatti quest’ultimo dà agli oggetti un colore più scuro, causato dalla mancanza di ossigeno nella fiamma. Laboratorio ceramico Pinto Nel 1839, il Duc de Luynes fu donato al famoso Museo della ceramica, Sevres, Francia. Una ciotola di maiolica probabilmente costruita a Malta. Questa acquisizione fu resa pubblica solo quattro anni più tardi. Le fabbriche di maiolica in Europa avevano attratto gli studiosi più appassionati e i collezionisti per molti anni, ma nessuno aveva mai sentito parlare dell’antica maiolica di Malta. Don Gaetano Reboul annotò nel suo diario “La lavorazione dell’argilla maltese per l'esportazione è cominciata”. Questo accadde durante il secondo anno di regno del Grand Master Pinto. Matteo Poussielgues ottenne il monopolio per la produzione di maioliche-ceramiche a Malta. Claudio Torquas, probabilmente francese, fu il principale ceramista dell’azienda. Nelle lettere di Pinto abbiamo notato con interesse i seguenti scritti “Ho ricevuto la formula per la produzione della porcellana traslucida”. Parte della gloria dei sovrani europei includeva la produzione di porcellane e ceramiche artistiche, e Malta era tra i maggiori produttori di ceramica. Abbiamo sentito parlare di doni pregiati creati a Malta, ma sfortunatamente abbiamo un solo esempio di ceramica con il marchio distintivo di Pinto. Altri oggetti attribuiti ad altri laboratori potrebbero anche essere stati prodotti a Malta. Il laboratorio di Pinto chiuse con l’invasione francese. La collezione di maiolica del museo è di origine italiana, mentre Pinto amava e seguiva lo stile francese. L’arte ceramica morì completamente, e nel 1886 il Dr. Nicola Zammit scrisse: “A parte utensili domestici grezzi in terracotta, delle forme e semplicità preistoriche, fatte a mano o con l’aiuto di una siviera, oggi lavoriamo su recipienti, anfore, brocche, vasi da fiori e vari articoli di uso domestico. Alcuni vasi di terracotta molto belli sono decorati con eleganti bassorilievi lavorati in stampi. Ma l’applicazione degli smalti è ancora in una fase sperimentale.” Sfortunatamente non sappiamo nulla dei laboratori che produssero queste terrecotte. Inizio del XX° secolo. Conosciamo solamente la ripresa della produzione locale a Malta nel ‘900. C’erano laboratori ceramici a Birkirkara, vicino al mulino a vento di Ganu, a Gozo presso la famiglia Sacco e a Zejtun presso la famiglia Ta’ Sakranobis. Questi laboratori utilizzavano argilla locale da Ghajn Tuffieha e Tat-Taflija a Gozo, un luogo che si trova tra i villaggi Ghasri e Zebbug. L’argilla era preparata per essiccazione, ridotta a piccoli frammenti e setacciata. In seguito era bagnata fino a farla divenire morbida, per poi mescolarla. Prima veniva pestata con i piedi, poi impastata con le mani, ed infine veniva incuneata per darle consistenza omogenea ed eliminare completamente l'aria. Infatti, le bolle d'aria avrebbero potuto causare delle rotture. A volte chamotte, sabbia o addirittura ceneri dei forni venivano aggiunti all’argilla per renderla più resistente e ridurne allo stesso tempo le deformazioni, le rotture o la porosità. Tutti i ceramisti locali avevano il proprio metodo e ne serbavano gelosamente il segreto. Mikiel Tabone di Zejtun utilizzava l’argilla di Gozo. Era l’unico vasaio di Malta ad avere una macchina azionata da un cavallo con gli occhi bendati, per mescolare l'argilla in un recipiente di legno. Abbiamo pochissime informazioni su queste ceramiche, ma sappiamo che il metodo tradizionale consisteva nella costruzione degli strati di argilla con l’aiuto di un tavolo girevole, fatto da un disco di legno azionato da un rullo conico per ceramica. La sabbia si utilizzava per creare uno strato tra il legno e l’argilla in modo che le lastre non si attaccassero, e i vari strati si aggiungevano ed univano, con l’acqua, se necessario, per costruire l’altezza del vaso. Le ceramiche erano poi rifinite sfregandole con un pezzo di giunco, o rese ancora più lisce sfregandole con un ciottolo (brunitura). Questo serviva a sigillare le ceramiche e a renderle impermeabili, dandogli un aspetto lucido. Per creare alcuni piccoli recipienti, si schiacciava una palla di argilla, premendo il dito nel mezzo, e facendo salire ai lati il recipiente, stringendone le pareti fino a quando erano sufficientemente sottili Questa tecnica poteva essere utilizzata solo per piccoli vasi, scodelle o lampade ad olio. Un altro metodo popolare, utilizzato ancora oggi dagli artisti della ceramica, era il cosiddetto “avvolgimento”: la ceramica era modellata come una corda; la corda ceramica infine era avvolta su se stessa, appoggiata su un disco rotondo di argilla, fino a raggiungere le dimensioni e le forme richieste. I rotoli di corda erano poi uniti riempiendo le fessure e rifinendo il tutto con un utensile semplice o utilizzando le dita. Il metodo utilizzato dipendeva dal tipo di lavoro che si voleva ottenere e anche dalle abilità del maestro ceramista. Verso il 1900 a Birkirkara furono introdotti i primi torni. Erano costruiti con un piccolo disco di legno appoggiato sul tavolo di lavoro ed un grande disco sul pavimento, con un bastone che li trapassava entrambi, ed un supporto che li rendeva molto semplici da girare. La ruota più grande era spinta con il piede in senso antiorario e faceva girare la ruota superiore, mentre il vasaio aggiungeva l’argilla per costruire il vaso su misura. Una simile ruota fu trovata nel laboratorio di Mikiel Tabone a Zejtun, dove lavoravano almeno due donne. Il lavoro finito era poi esposto al sole, fino a quando si era solidificato, ed in seguito, veniva essiccato lentamente per almeno un mese, o almeno fino a quando c'erano altri prodotti per la cottura nel fuoco. I forni nei diversi laboratori ceramici di Malta, cioè Birkirkara, Zejtun e Gozo erano di forme diverse, ma tutti erano alimentati a legna, soprattutto con rami, ed erano costruiti in pietra con degli archi che formavano un cerchio, ed erano molto simili ad altri forni ritrovati in vari paesi del Mediterraneo. Il vasaio spargeva sopra al forno ceramiche rotte o polvere di ceramica, per isolarlo meglio. Un po’ d’aria passava attraverso gli archi in modo da non far spegnere il fuoco. I vasi erano costruiti sul pavimento su lastre di pietra e poi rovesciati, in modo da lasciare spazio per il legno da infilare sotto i recipienti di argilla, che erano accatastati l’uno sull’altro con l’oggetto più grande sul fondo. La cottura iniziava con ramoscelli ed erba secca in modo da riscaldare il forno lentamente. Poi il fuoco era alimentato con rami secchi e pezzi di mobili scartati e tronchi d'albero. Pare che i forni non fossero dotati di camino, ma che il fumo uscisse attraverso la porta, le lastre di pietra, e gli archi. Per la cottura erano necessari circa tre giorni, con sorveglianza continua. L’esperienza insegnò ai vasai a comprendere la temperatura del forno dal colore degli oggetti di argilla all’interno. Il forno di Zejtun era un po’ più complicato, con una camera di cottura separata sotto il forno, per bruciare la legna. Questa camera era coperta da una lastra di pietra con dello spazio nel mezzo. Il forno aveva poi una terza camera sopra le altre due da dove, si poteva guardare la seconda camera da un buco nel tetto, per vedere se le ceramiche erano cotte. La terza camera si poteva raggiungere attraverso degli scalini a lato del forno. Dopo tre giorni di cottura, il forno continuava ad ardere con trucioli di legno. Mikiel Tabone, del laboratorio ceramico di Zejtun, aveva un contratto per acquistare tutti i trucioli da Malta Drydocks. Le ceramiche costruite in questi tre laboratori erano destinate soprattutto all’utilizzo pratico: vasi per conservare cibi, come formaggi ed olive, o per trasportare l’acqua e mantenerla fresca. Le decorazioni erano molto limitate e la maggior parte erano ispirate a decorazioni simili di oggetti importati da paesi vicini. La tecnica della smaltatura sembra essere stata dimenticata per alcuni anni, specialmente quando iniziò ad essere molto semplice importare ceramiche smaltate dalla vicina Italia. Risultati ancora migliori furono raggiunti con la brunitura prima della cottura, una tecnica tipica della ceramica maltese. Un’altra tecnica consisteva nell’applicazione di argilla semiliquida, uno strato di argilla di un differente colore mescolata con l’acqua. Le decorazioni venivano dipinte sulla ceramica, con un differente strato di argilla semiliquida, o intagliate ed esposte al colore sottostante. L’argilla semiliquida rossa era utilizzata per decorare quella bianca, o gialla e viceversa. Le decorazioni erano molto semplici ed erano fatte con le dita o con le unghie. Sacco di Gozo utilizzava un pettine con pochi denti per intagliare le decorazioni sugli oggetti che costruiva. Oggetti decorati con argilla semiliquida sono stati ritrovati negli scavi della Cappella di Hal Millieri, e sono stati analizzati dal Dr. D.P.S. Peacock: sembrano essere ceramiche maltesi risalenti all’epoca medievale. Altri cocci risalenti al medioevo, della stessa cappella, erano smaltati, e non è sicuro, ma non si può escludere che furono creati a Malta. I vasai maltesi provarono a rendere le loro ceramiche non solo funzionali, ma anche esteticamente piacevoli. Essi iniziarono a lisciare i loro vasellami con l’acqua. L’acqua rendeva i manufatti più levigati, ma serviva anche a chiudere i pori per rendere le ceramiche impermeabili. Sulla stessa linea dei primi tre laboratori ceramici, ma molto più tardi, troviamo un altro laboratorio in una Cantina a Rabat, di Peter Borg, meglio conosciuto come Peter il Vasaio. Aveva appreso questa arte da alcuni arabi che al tempo lavoravano a Birkirkara, Malta. Peter ebbe un incidente motociclistico, e per questo pensò che la carriera sedentaria al tornio fosse quella più adatta a lui. Gli fu assegnata la prima licenza per produrre la ceramica nel 1938, sebbene, in modo non ufficiale, lavorasse già da molto tempo. Fin dall’inizio conosceva bene la tecnica della smaltatura, ma la utilizzava molto poco, perché i prodotti smaltati erano più costosi. I pochi prodotti smaltati disponibili presso il suo laboratorio erano riservati a clienti speciali, poiché la smaltatura era preziosa quanto l’oro. I suoi primi lavori consistevano in brocche, anfore e urne di terracotta ed altri vasellami tipici, creati con l’argilla locale, ritrovati negli scavi di Ghajn Tuffieha. L’argilla era utilizzata senza alcuna preparazione. La superficie secca e sporca dell’argilla veniva grattata, e l’argilla plastica e pulita veniva scavata e messa su un tornio a pedale. Peter il Vasaio si costruì da solo un forno per la cottura, e i suoi figli dopo di lui continuarono ad utilizzare il forno fino al 1970, più o meno fino a quando si smise di utilizzare l’argilla locale – un vero peccato poiché a Malta l’argilla può produrre colori molto caldi come il rosso e il giallo, con molte variazioni tonali. Il forno è molto più pratico rispetto a quelli del 1920. È costituito da tre camere tutte a forma di cupola, la prima serve alla combustione della legna ed è ventilata per far passare il calore alla seconda camera, dove si mettono le ceramiche a cuocere e la terza camera, che fu aggiunta più tardi per proteggere il fuoco ed interferire con il ciclo di lucidatura del fuoco. Nel 1946 furono costruite a Malta delle figurine decorative da un uomo tunisino maltese chiamato Toni tal-Gibs (Toni del gesso) che iniziò a lavorare il gesso di Parigi utilizzando un asino per rompere le pietre di gesso. Le vendeva al governo per utilizzarle negli ospedali durante la Seconda Guerra mondiale. Aveva degli stampi portati da Tunisi. Iniziò a produrre le figurine di gesso, ma poi tutte le figurine furono costruite in argilla fino all’inizio degli anni Sessanta. Formazione ceramica a Malta La Scuola d’Arte fu aperta a Malta da Chev. Vincent Bonello che era allora il Direttore di alcuni Musei, portò il Dr. F. Chiardola dall’Italia, per insegnare ceramica agli studenti che frequentavano le classi serali. Chiardola rimase a Malta durante un breve periodo, e non fece altro che dipingere sulle piastrelle. Nelle stanze private del Giudice Giovanni Bonello c’è una piastrella che risale al 1927, che è la prova esistente dei primi oggetti artistici smaltati, prodotti a Malta in quegli anni. La piastrella ha uno stile Art Nouveau nero disegnato da Chiardola e riporta una dedica scritta, in quanto primo oggetto smaltato prodotto dalla Scuola d'Arte di Malta. Si può vedere una riproduzione di una pittura di St. Paul, dipinta su una piastrella, all’entrata di Mdina, sempre firmata da Chiardola. Laboratorio ceramico Castelletti Nel frattempo a Ta’ Qali era stato aperto un laboratorio ceramico dalla famiglia Castelletti. Era un laboratorio piuttosto grande aggiunto alla villa di proprietà della famiglia, dove furono prodotti molti vasi, piastrelle murali e Madonne di grandi dimensioni e ricche di decorazioni. Degli esempi del lavoro di questo laboratorio si possono ancora vedere nelle isole Maltesi, specialmente a Mdina e Valletta. Oggetti tipici di questa produzione erano le Madonne e le figurine smaltate monocrome, blu o bianche. Un particolare interessante riguardante questo laboratorio è l’utilizzo di alcuni lavoranti italiani e un artigiano tedesco. Tutti i lavoratori lasciarono però Malta allo scoppio della Guerra, mentre Contino Castelletti morì durante la guerra. Sappiamo che a volte Ganni Vella dipingeva per Castelletti e che il laboratorio era solito cuocere alcune opere di Emvin Cremona e Ganni Vella. Mabel Strickland aveva aiutato Contino Castelletti ad acquistare le attrezzature necessarie per aprire il laboratorio e a metà degli anni Trenta i Castelletti si dovettero spostare da Ta' Qali a causa dell’imminenza della guerra. La maggior parte degli stampi furono messi in salvo in una cantina a Villa Bologna, residenza della famiglia Strickland. Scoppiò la guerra e nessuno in quel periodo parlò più di ceramiche. Ceramika Maltija – Prime ceramiche maltesi Mabel Strickland, che possedeva una fabbrica di tessuti e merletti a Rabat, e Contino Castelletti erano amici e membri della stessa associazione artigiana, la MIA (Malta Industries Association) ed in suo onore Mabel si sentì in dovere di continuare a lavorare la ceramica. Quando Mabel chiese il permesso di aprire un laboratorio ceramico a Villa Bologna, la sua richiesta fu rifiutata per 5 anni, ma infine nel 1952 le fu concesso il permesso. Cecilia de Trafford, la figlia di Mabel Strickland si rivolse alla Scuola d’Arte per chiedere una raccomandazione per impiegare un promettente artista nel laboratorio ceramico che stava aprendo in una parte di Villa Bologna, ad Attard, con l’aiuto di un pittore inglese, di un ceramista, il Sig. Charles Bone FRBS, A.R.C.A. e sua moglie Sheila Mitchell FRBS, A.R.C.A. una scultrice di molti oggetti religiosi. Ai tempi il Sig. Bone era un importante artista e fu anche intervistato in un programma sull’arte della BBC. John Bonnici fu raccomandato da Vincent Apap e George Borg e Bones venne a visitarlo presso il suo luogo di lavoro dove aveva scolpito una grande Madonna in un giardino privato. Rimasero impressionati da quello che fece e dalla sua prima visita al laboratorio iniziò anche a lavorarci. Il suo primo lavoro consisteva nell’aiutare il Sig. Bones a costruire un forno a benzina mentre Sheila creava un bassorilievo raffigurante la Madonna della Caraffa. La prima decorazione di Bonicci sulla ceramica fu Nostra Signora della Salute. Ne seguirono molte altre. Passate le vacanze estive, dopo tre mesi di formazione presso il laboratorio, il Sig. Bone Bonnici fu lasciato da solo al laboratorio. La Sig. De Trafford portò Carmelo Gerada per aiutare Bonnici. Gerada era precedentemente impiegato presso il laboratorio di tessitura e merletti De Trafford e creava gli stili dei merletti. Questa tendenza rimase e gli stili tipici della Ceramika Maltika sono i graffitti a pigmenti sulla ceramica che imitano i merletti, ancora prodotti ai giorni nostri. Sempre lui iniziò a dipingere le lettere, per i nomi. Altri due lavoratori Censina e Vitorin furono assunti presso Ceramica Maltija. Talvolta il Sig. Bone portava gli studenti dal suo college in Inghilterra, per fare un’esperienza lavorativa a Malta. A volte gli studenti rimanevano lì per un intero anno e alcuni lasciavano tracce della loro presenza creando nuovi stili durante il loro soggiorno a Malta. Bonnicci continuò a plasmare e lavorare sulla base delle ricette di Bone per la smaltatura ed i pigmenti, che in quei tempi non si utilizzavano in tutti i laboratori. Nel frattempo si iniziò ad importare l’argilla dall’Inghilterra poiché le impurità nell’argilla locale e le attrezzature per la preparazione dell’argilla non esistevano a Malta. Di conseguenza l’argilla locale non era adatta alla smaltatura. A volte veniva chiesto a Censu Apap, uno dei migliori scultori, di creare alcuni design per Ceramika Maltija e una decorazione utilizzata ancora oggi è quella dell’asino. Guzeppi Vella di Mellieha fu assunto al laboratorio e iniziò immediatamente a lavorare al tornio e presto divenne molto bravo a costruire grandi urne e vasi sul tornio a pedale. Ma sfortunatamente emigrò in Australia. Il 1953 fu segnato dalla visita di Sua Maestà la Regina Elisabetta a Malta, e Ceramika Maltija si diede da fare per creare dei souvenir per commemorare questa visita. Posaceneri, boccali e altri oggetti decorati con decalcomanie importate dall’Inghilterra e scene locali, e un busto della regina modellato da John Bonnici, che per l’occasione fu esposto presso il negozio di souvenir De Traffords e al Grand Hotel Phoenicia, che al tempo era il miglior hotel dell’isola. Il busto ceramico era l'oggetto più venduto soprattutto ai turisti inglesi che al tempo erano davvero numerosi. Allora, Cecilia De Trafford decise di mandare John Bonnici a studiare e a fare pratica a Stoke-on-Trent. Andando in Inghilterra, attraverso l’Italia, John accompagnato dell’attuale direttore dello stesso laboratorio, ora chiamato Ceramica Saracina, Gerald De Trafford, il figlio di Cecilia, visitò le fabbriche di ceramica a Firenze e Faenza. Visitò Ginori, famosa per i sanitari e le stoviglie, Bertolotti a Milano, per le figurine, e poi passo un mese a Parigi per vedere i processi utilizzati nella produzione. Fino al 1955 i forni erano principalmente alimentati a gasolio. Bonnici doveva rimanere a Stoke per un anno di formazione, ma fu richiamato a Malta prima della fine dell'anno per costruire degli stampi da sostituire a quelli ormai logori. Mentre si trovava a Malta ricevette una buona notizia: aveva vinto una borsa di studio di quattro anni a Roma per studiare scultura e ceramica. Mentre si trovava a Roma, i De Trafford visitarono John Bonnici al college e rimasero affascinati dagli smalti brillanti e colorati che si utilizzavano in Italia. Mentre si trovavano lì ordinarono argilla e smalti, e da allora cominciarono a fare le ordinazioni in Italia invece che in Inghilterra. Questo non fece piacere al Sig. Bone che continuò a venire a Malta per disegnare nuove decorazioni per Ceramika Maltija. Alcuni di questi disegni erano placche religiose e figurine maltesi tradizionali come una donna con la Faldetta e un uomo che sbuccia delle pere acerbe. John Bonnici si recò in Italia tra il 1954 e il 1958, mostrando le sue prime sculture ceramiche nel 1955 alla fiera Malta Trade fair Exhibition che si tenne ai giardini San Anton. Nella fiera era stato costruito un apposito padiglione per le belle arti, in cui esponevano artisti del calibro di Frank Portelli, Emvin Cremona e Censu Apap. Oltre alle opere d'arte esposte, Bonnici esponeva anche prodotti commerciali presso il padiglione Ceramika Maltija. Durante gli ultimi anni di studio, fu chiesto a John Bonnici di creare e gestire un laboratorio ceramico alla Scuola Tecnica a Paola per i ragazzi e alla Maria Assunta per le ragazze. A Paola, nel 1958 c’erano tre forni elettrici con altre attrezzature e materiali, destinati all’utilizzo degli studenti durante le ore di scuola e anche nelle classi serali. Le ceramiche furono introdotte per la prima volta come parte delle materie scolastiche nelle scuole pubbliche. Nel 1959-60 i primi studenti iniziarono i corsi di livello O con 3-5 allieve della Scuola Sacred Heart, una di loro era una delle sorelle. Nel 1974-1975 un esperto del Commonwealth arrivò a Malta per aprire una Scuola di formazione, a Targa Gap, specializzata in artigianato come la ceramica, la pietra, gioielleria e metallo. John Bonnici fu chiamato ad insegnare nella nuova scuola e nel 1976 fu nominato direttore, con la nomina retrodatata al 1974. Ceramica Maltija chiamava i migliori studenti della Scuola d’Arte pubblica, e sappiamo che molti artisti maltesi lavorarono lì a lungo, dopo John Bonnici. Per i ragazzi che avevano talento Ceramica Maltija era l’unica opportunità per lavorare con l’arte, e di conseguenza la maggior parte delle persone che amava dipingere o scolpire veniva mandata a lavorare lì. Conosciamo lo scultore Toni Angius, Sunny Gatt, che lavorò in altri laboratori ceramici, ed ora ha il proprio laboratorio Master Plaster a Ta’ Qali; Hoe Genovese, che aprì un'altra piccola azienda Ceramart Ltd a Ta’ Qali, che produce placche con nomi molto originali e oggetti religiosi; Aldo Cremona il fratello di Emvin Cremona che ancora lavora lì; Vince Camilleri che ora è pittore capo presso Alka Ceramics a Ta’ Qali. Tutti loro sono ex lavoratori di Ceramica Maltija, che per anni è stato l’unico laboratorio ceramico a Malta. La maggior parte di questi artisti iniziò a lavorare presso Ceramika Maltija quando era molto giovane per fare esperienza. Alcuni di loro sono poi riusciti ad aprire un proprio laboratorio, e stanno ancora lavorando in questo settore anche ai giorni nostri. Tra gli altri importanti artisti che lavorarono per qualche tempo presso Ceramika Maltija ci sono lo scultore Joseph Genuis,il pittore Twanny Darmanin, il ceramista Tony Briffa, che era solito insegnare ceramica, e che recentemente è immigrato in Belgio. Gabriel Caruana e Neville Ferry che ora sono due dei più importanti artisti della ceramica erano anche frequenti visitatori di Ceramika Maltija, e furono un trampolino per la scena ceramica maltese del XX° secolo. Bellissime decorazioni di Madonne furono create da Joseph Galea di Rabat, e al pittore Frank Portelli furono commissionati degli affreschi murali tra cui uno molto importante, "Malta Industries", che descriveva l’artigianato di Malta, i tessitori e i vasai. Freddie Spiteri aveva uno stile molto particolare in una nuova tecnica, cioè la pittura a soprasmalto, che si applicava su oggetti che erano già stati smaltati e cotti. La sua specialità erano pannelli raffiguranti pesci. ‘Hliefa’ era un lavoratore tunisino di Ceramica Maltija, che plasmò alcuni oggetti come il Gallo, il carciofo e una lampada a forma di ananas, ancor oggi molto popolari. Un altro artista, Joe Sultana, un pittore esperto della flora di Malta, era solito lavorare lì, ed ancora oggi svolge parte del lavoro di Ceramica Saracina. Tra gli altri artisti che lavorarono presso Ceramika Maltija ricordiamo Franco Cefai e Alfred Fenech. Lo sgraffitto è una tecnica tipica degli oggetti prodotti da Ceramika Maltija. Decorazioni simili a merletti su vasellami verdi (ceramiche non cotte), alle quali viene applicato il sottosmalto, sono ancora molto popolari presso i turisti. L’idea originale era di Gerada Le serigrafie erano molto utilizzate anche su piastrelle e pannelli murali. I contorni erano serigrafati ed i colori venivano riempiti a mano con il pennello. Ceramiche Bristow/Caqqufa – Prodotti ceramici Nel 1960 una società inglese aprì a Kordin un’azienda ceramica, Bristow Potteries. Assunsero come lavoratori gli studenti dalla Scuola tecnica Paola, tra cui ad esempio John Vella, che più tardi fondò la Potterware Ltd. Mentre lo stile della Ceramica Maltija, che per molti anni dominò la scena come ceramica tradizionale maltese, era essenzialmente mediterranea – molto simile agli stili tradizionali Italiani, Bristow Potteries introdusse uno stile inglese, che prese piede molto facilmente a Malta, sia perché era ancora sotto il dominio britannico, che per i molti turisti e residenti inglesi che vi si recavano Malta durante tutto l’anno. Oggi Bristow Potteries è di proprietà dei quattro fratelli Grima, e produce principalmente articoli dipinti a mano e alcune ceramiche moderne. Quindi i principali laboratori ceramici degli anni Sessanta a Malta avevano stili differenti da Ceramika Seracina, che utilizzava uno stile mediterraneo dominato principalmente da ceramiche dipinte a mano. Bristol aveva uno stile inglese con terraglie e colori molto simili a quelli prodotti in Inghilterra al tempo. Peter il Vasaio produceva ancora ceramiche e urne non smaltate, ancora molto popolari sul mercato locale. Infine, Potterware, chiamato in seguito Caqqufa, iniziò nel 1973 a creare vasi al tornio e gradualmente introdusse gli stili degli altri laboratori nel suo lavoro. Malta adottò diversi stili e li rese propri adattandoli alla domanda sia del mercato locale, che dei turisti in visita nell’isola. Con il passare del tempo i laboratori ceramici adattarono le loro linee di prodotti alla domanda dei clienti e persero la loro individualità, che fu sacrificata per soddisfare il mercato. L’unico laboratorio che continua a produrre oggetti secondo la sua tradizione è Ceramika Seracina ma sfortunatamente negli anni ha sofferto della mancanza di nuove leve, e continua a produrre le stesse decorazioni e stili che utilizzava molti anni fa. È davvero un peccato che un’azienda con una storia e una tradizione così forti, che iniziò a formare molte generazioni di vasai, rischi di chiudere a causa di concorrenti aggressivi che continuano a rinnovare le loro linee di prodotti per soddisfare le mode del momento. La ceramica nell’istruzione – i primi anni Nel frattempo mentre l’arte ceramica era ancora insegnata nelle Scuole tecniche Paule e Maria Assunta, il Ministero dell’istruzione aveva bisogno di nuovi e qualificati docenti per insegnare questa materia. Alla fine del 1950 la Sig. Mortimer, Ministro dell’istruzione di quel tempo, fece venire un’insegnante dal Regno Unito, la Sig. Molly Winterburn, anche autrice del libro “A Handbook of Ceramics” (una guida pratica all’arte della ceramica), per tenere un corso di formazione agli insegnanti d’arte. Molti insegnanti frequentarono i suoi corsi, ma uno in particolare, Paul Haber, che era stato prima uno studente della Scuola d'Arte, nella classe di scultura di George Borg e Vincent Apap, si appassionò immediatamente all’arte ceramica e non l’abbandonò mai più. Poco dopo il suo primo corso a Malta lasciò l’isola per completare i suoi studi su questo soggetto al Camberwell College of Arts a Londra, dove rimase per due anni. Ritornò poi a fare l’insegnante, ma questa volta nelle scuole medie. In seguito il Governo di Malta gli assegnò una borsa di studio di quattro anni, per specializzarsi nell’arte della ceramica. Fino ad ora nessuno a Malta si era specializzato in questo campo. Passò il primo anno dei suoi studi all’Hornsey College of Arts, dove si cimentò con diverse arti, utilizzando le mani in molti lavori. Allo stesso tempo si costruì un portfolio sufficiente ad essere accettato presso il College che desiderava, il posto migliore per studiare ceramica nel Regno Unito. Infatti, nel 1972 fu uno dei 14 studenti accettati al Central College of Arts and Desing di Londra dove iniziò i suoi tre anni di corso in Ceramica. Il College aveva le migliori attrezzature ed i migliori insegnanti di tutto il Regno Unito. Alcuni dei migliori artisti ceramisti inglesi furono suoi insegnanti. Durante i suoi studi Paul sperimentò e studiò gli usi e le tecniche possibili nella ceramica, a parte le composizioni chimiche delle varie argille e degli smalti. Fece esperienza lavorativa a Stoke-on-Trent presso importanti aziende, come Wedgwood e Spode. In Inghilterra si dedicò a studi approfonditi dell’argilla di Malta e fece una dissertazione sulla ceramica preistorica maltese. A fine corso gli fu consegnato il diploma, per le sue importanti scoperte, e la laurea (con menzione d’onore) in ceramica. Uno dei lavori esposti durante la cerimonia di laurea fu acquistato dalla Wedgewood, per la propria collezione privata. Paul tornò a Malta e per breve tempo insegnò nelle scuole pubbliche. In seguito fu chiamato dal Ministero dell’industria per lavorare come sostituto di un Esperto in Ceramiche dell’UNIDO (Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per lo Sviluppo Industriale), che a quel tempo lavorava a Malta su un progetto dell’UNIDO. Ceramiche Alka/Arte ceramica/Ceramiche Nel 1980 Paul Haber aprì il proprio laboratorio ceramico, Alka Ceramics Ltd., e fu il primo ad iniziare una produzione su larga scala esportando ceramiche decorative contemporanee in container fino in America, Canada e Nord Europa. Tutto quello che produceva fu assorbito dal mercato americano, per circa dieci anni, ma l’aumento dei salari a Malta e l’influsso delle ceramiche asiatiche a basso costo nel Nord america tolsero competitività al mercato ceramico maltese. Lentamente ma inesorabilmente i prodotti e gli stili, che erano tutti modelli originali di Paul, cambiarono per adattarsi e soddisfare la domanda dei mercati locali, specialmente per la decorazione di interni negli hotel e in altri luoghi pubblici. Nel 1995 Paul Haber comprò Ceramart Ltd., una piccola azienda aperta da Joe Genovese. Uno degli impiegati di Alka Ceramics, Joseph Mizzi, aprì un proprio laboratorio ceramico anche presso il Villaggio dell’artigianato, dove, ad eccezione di CeramiKa Saracina, si trovano anche tutti gli altri laboratori. Il laboratorio ceramico Barn gestito dai coniugi Formosa è l’unico a Gozo. I due coniugi hanno studiato in Canada e si sono specializzati nella ceramica fatta a mano. Lo Studio ceramics era un altro piccolo laboratorio che ha chiuso circa cinque anni fa. Lo studio Pot , più una scuola che un laboratorio, è gestito da Julie Apap. Julie produce da sola recipienti, vasi e ceramiche artistiche. Materiali e attrezzature Tutte le fabbriche di ceramica a Malta utilizzano argilla importata dall’Italia e dall’Inghilterra. Gli smalti utilizzati sono smalti preparati dagli stessi produttori italiani e inglesi, solo pochi artisti creano i propri smalti con i materiali grezzi importati. Si utilizzano molti tipi diversi di argilla come: grès, rossa, chamotte, terracotta rossa, terracotta dall’Italia e materiale per alte cotture dall’Inghilterra, semiporcellana e porcellana. Le attrezzature, come forni, torni, e impastatrici sono importate dall’Italia e dall’Inghilterra sebbene spesso siano costruiti in altri paesi, come ad esempio in Australia. Le ceramiche come Arte Paul Haber riuscì ad unire l’aspetto commerciale della ceramica all’espressione individuale degli artisti della ceramica. Durante il 1960 l’arte ceramica ottenne lo status delle altre arti tradizionali, anche se rimane ancora oggi considerata soprattutto una forma di artigianato. Nelle esposizioni collettive si iniziarono a vedere bellissimi esempi di arte ceramica, tra cui le opere dell'artista pioniere Gabriel Caruana, con i suoi pezzi unici, e più tardi, quelle di Toni Pace, con un approccio figurativo più classico. John Bonnici continuò a fare ceramica, come fece per un lungo periodo; Joe Casha e Novelle Ferry, che come Haber lasciarono l’isola per specializzarsi in questa arte, rimasero in Inghilterra per lungo tempo. In un’esposizione sulla ceramica di Malta, tenutasi nel 1990, Ceramica Malta ’90, si potevano ammirare le più importanti opere della storia dell'arte ceramica di questo paese. L’esposizione includeva lavori di Gabriel Caruana, Paul Haber, Victor Spiteri, Paul Scerri, Sina Farrugia e Anna Diavola, con il figlio Mark. L’arte ceramica a Malta utilizza un approccio creativo e fantasioso, che risente dello stile poetico della scuola ceramica di Faenza, ma con un grande impeto inventivo e creativo, che rendono Malta orgogliosa dei suoi tanti talenti. Molti artisti ceramici della nuova generazione hanno iniziato a formarsi a Malta alla Scuola d'Artigianato Targa Gap e hanno subito l'influenza dominante di Gabrile Caruana, che fu docente per lungo tempo. Istruzione ceramica e vasaia - oggi La ceramica oggi è insegnata in molte scuole come parte delle materie scolastiche complementari, a cui si dedicano poche ore settimanali. Le scuole che prevedono questo tipo di insegnamento sono le seguenti: Scuole pubbliche St Benedict, Liceo Mikiel Anton Vassalli, Maria Regina, Maria Assunta, St Tereza, Verdala, Saint Hurst, Mtarfa, Liceo (Pieta), St Patricks. Scuole d’Arte (Gozo). Riabilitazione/Attrezzature Corradino Correctional Facility, Dar Tal-Providenza, Mount Carmel, Dar il-Kaptan. Scuole private Sacred Heart, Verdala International, San Anton, San Andrea, St Edwards, St Dorothy. L’unica scuola che prevede l’insegnamento della ceramica tra le materie fondamentali, anche nelle classi serali, è la MCAST a Targa Gap. Per questa scuola non si devono pagare tasse d’iscrizione ai corsi fondamentali diurni, a differenza di quelli serali, in quanto finanziati dall'Unione Europea. Altri settori promossi come la ceramica sono la filigrana ed i pizzi. Negli ultimi tempi, sono stati scoperti molti giovani altri artisti della ceramica durante i corsi tenuti da ceramisti come Julie Apap, Zell Osborne, Charles Sammut, Sina Farrugia, Anna Ciavola, George Muscat , Kenneth Grima e Paul Haber, tra cui gli ultimi tre sono insegnanti al Mcast, il Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology, dove si tengono corsi per ottenere il diploma nazionale in Ceramica. Gli studenti sono numerosi, entusiasti e creativi. Scuole private Vari maestri della ceramica impartiscono lezioni private. Il costo medio è di 3Lm (7,14 euro) all’ora incluso il materiale, o 2,25Lm (5,35 euro) escluso il costo dei materiali. Le lezioni individuali durano circa tre ore ed i corsi normalmente durano nove settimane con una lezione a settimana. Altre lezioni private si tengono durante tutto l’anno, che includono anche due ore di workshop, ad un costo tra 2,50Lm e 4Lm per sessione, materiale escluso. L’argilla importata, gli strumenti e le attrezzature sono facilmente reperibili presso Alka Ceramics a Ta' Qali, che rifornisce anche le scuole ed altri clienti con materie prime, attrezzature, servizi post vendita, pezzi di scorta, e ancor più importante con la propria consulenza sulla difficile lavorazione della ceramica, sui forni e sulle altre attrezzature. La produzione attuale I laboratori ceramici di Malta producono soprattutto oggetti smaltati e stampati per i turisti: pezzi modellati come lampade e urne specialmente per i giardini, targhe con i nomi delle case per il mercato locale, oggetti di grès con uno stile di influenza britannica, lavori dipinti simili alla maiolica, souvenir di terracotta e prodotti particolari, come trofei, decorazioni murali e regali per le aziende. Laboratori ceramici / Botteghe Le tre principali aziende che producono ceramica a Malta si trovano nel Villaggio dell’Artigianato a Ta’ Quali, un'ex base aerea situata sotto la vecchia città di Mdina. Alcune delle botteghe del villaggio sono ancora costituite da parti della base, cioè vecchie baracche prefabbricate. Nonostante siano delle costruzioni storiche, risalenti alla Seconda Guerra mondiale, a causa dello scarso isolamento del metallo di costruzione, non sono negozi ideali,poiché molto caldi d’estate e freddi di inverno. Il Governo ha in programma di demolire l’intero villaggio e di ricostruirlo come un tipico villaggio maltese con strade e piazze e edifici pubblici. Molti turisti arrivano al Villaggio dell’artigianato, ma sfortunatamente la maggior parte arrivano con tour guidati organizzati dai tour operator e non sono liberi di girare. Le visite sono organizzate prima, e conducono i turisti solo nelle aziende con cui hanno degli accordi particolari. In un paio di aziende i turisti possono visitare i laboratori e vedere gli artigiani al lavoro, mentre in altre si può vedere un pittore che si dedica alla maiolica, o altre pitture a mano all’interno del negozio stesso. Le aziende a Ta’ Qali aprono solo nelle ore lavorative e chiudono la sera come i normali negozi. Inoltre rimangono chiuse durante il fine settimana. Nel Villaggio dell’artigianato la maggior parte delle aziende e negozi vendono anche altri oggetti che non producono loro, questo è un peccato, perché hanno quasi tutti gli stessi oggetti. Sfortunatamente alcuni vendono addirittura oggetti importati, alcuni dei quali sono fatti appositamente per il mercato maltese e per essere venduti come souvenir a Malta. Quelli che espongono i propri prodotti sono molto più interessanti da visitare, ma sono anche molto pochi. Confezioni e prezzi Anche se i prezzi sono generalmente calcolati sull'ammontare del lavoro manuale che ha richiesto un oggetto, spesso è il mercato a dettare i prezzi. Rispetto ad altri paesi stranieri la nostra ceramica è molto economica, se si considerano il lavoro e le spese sostenute, e il costo per l’importazione della materia prima. A Malta i prezzi non possono essere alzati. Infatti se gli oggetti fossero più costosi rispetto agli standard locali, nessuno li acquisterebbe e non è ancora possibile dipendere solamente dal mercato turistico. Solo i pochi che si rivolgono al turismo e che hanno degli accordi con i tour operator alzano i prezzi e rivendono i loro prodotti anche a negozi di altre aree turistiche, che chiedono anche il cinquanta per cento del prezzo di vendita come commissione. I negozi di souvenir sparsi nell’isola e i negozi degli hotel vendono soprattutto souvenir importati e pochi prodotti dell’artigianato locale, ma non c’è un solo negozio nell’intera isola che sia specializzato in artigianato di Malta. Il Malta Craft Council (Consiglio per l’artigianato locale) ha un proprio luogo di esposizione, dove mette in mostra solo prodotti dell’artigianato locale. in una zona molto centrale a Valletta, ma purtroppo è solo un’esposizione e i prodotti non sono in vendita. Le confezioni dipendono dai vari negozi: alcuni, pochi, utilizzano confezioni che fabbricano loro stessi, perché il giro d’affari è piuttosto basso e perché i laboratori ceramici maltese hanno talmente tanti prodotti di diverse forme che sarebbe impossibile confezionarli tutti. Le confezioni sono fatte a Malta, ma la quantità minima è troppo elevata perché i piccoli negozi ne possano usufruire. I ceramisti maltesi non si sono mai uniti per promuovere un’iniziativa comune, dove tutti possano sopravvivere imponendo dei prezzi giusti, senza ricorrere alla spietata concorrenza. Nessuno ha una nicchia di mercato sicura su cui operare. Impatto ambientale Il ministero della salute a Malta ha delle severe regolamentazioni sulla sicurezza e sull’impatto ambientale. Tutte le materie prime devono essere conformi alle regolamentazioni ed alcuni chimici, come il piombo, la litargite ed altri materiali pericolosi, sono proibiti o possono essere utilizzati solo sotto stretto controllo. Per questo motivo, l’industria ceramica non produce alcun danno grave all’ambiente. I rifiuti dell’industria ceramica locale consistono soprattutto in piccole quantità di cocci ceramici che possono essere facilmente ridotti in chamotte e mescolati all’argilla, per essere utilizzati nell'industria edile. Stili nella ceramica Lo stile della ceramica maltese è fortemente influenzato da tutti quelli che dominarono l’isola, dai ceramisti stranieri che aprirono negozi o lavorarono per un po' di tempo a Malta, dagli immigrati ritornati che hanno portato con sé influente straniere, e dalla domanda dei turisti provenienti in gran parte dal Regno Unito a cui sono indirizzati la maggior parte dei prodotti in vendita. Inoltre la nostra ceramica è influenzata dagli stili presi dai vari college e seminari stranieri dove hanno studiato e fatto esperienza la maggior parte dei nostri artisti, cioè da varie città, e dall’Italia e dal Regno Unito, anche se alcune influenze arrivano dall’America, Canada e Australia. Da un punto di vista commerciale le nostre ceramiche sono una miscela di contemporaneo e tradizionale, poco originali. Gli sforzi dei singoli laboratori per migliorare la situazione non hanno suscitato il giusto apprezzamento, né da parte del pubblico in termini di vendita, né da parte del governo in termini di salvaguardia dell'artigianato e aiuti finanziari. Le attrezzature sono molto costose e le materie prime devono essere importate, il gas e l’elettricità sono molto costosi e l’importazione, specialmente dalla Cina e dai paesi asiatici, non aiuta la situazione, ma noi maltesi siamo persone piene di risorse e continuiamo a combattere ogni battaglia. Continuiamo a rinnovarci secondo le esigenze del mercato, e soprattutto continuiamo a lavorare con la passione degli artigiani, operando per molte ore, cercando di essere creativi e creando oggetti che non potreste trovare in altri laboratori d’Europa, se non di tutto il mondo.
