В декабре к городу подошла эскадра под флагом Российской Империи. Четырнадцать боевых кораблей — две тысячи белогвардейцев, сбежавших от большевиков. В город пускать их нельзя: кто будет кормить эту ораву? Но уехать они не могут: у них ни угля, ни продовольствия.
«Белый Шанхай» — это рассказ о людях, которым пришлось начинать все с нуля — в чужой стране, где им никто не обрадовался. Пока беженцы сидели на кораблях и ждали решения своей участи, Нина Купина тайком затеяла переговоры с контрабандистами, которые приплыли разведать — не продают ли русские оружие? Она посоветовала капитану «списать» несколько ящиков винтовок, получила с контрабандистов деньги, но капитану отдала только половину: он не говорил по-французски и не понял, о какой цене шла речь.

В обмен она попросила лицензию на открытие русского охранного агентства.
Охранный бизнес приносил хорошие деньги в смутные времена. Великие Державы и СССР по очереди подкармливали китайских милитаристов, чтобы отстоять свои интересы на Дальнем Востоке. Теперь у него были деньги, но его то и дело шантажировали бандиты и требовали, чтобы он выполнял их поручения. Translation - English The year 1922. Shanghai is the richest port in the Far East. Foreigners have built factories and railroads here, and fenced off the best areas for themselves. The government in Peking just suffers in silence; the country has already been divided into semi-feudal principalities for many years, and the Chinese have neither the army nor the money to resist the invaders. On paper, China is a free country, but in reality, it’s almost a colony.
In December, a squadron approached the city under the flag of the Russian Empire. Fourteen warships — two thousand White Guardists who fled from the Bolsheviks. Letting them into the city is out of the question; who will feed this horde? But they can’t leave; they have neither coal nor food.
White Shanghai is the story of people who had to start from scratch in a strange country where no one was glad to see them. Gold digger Nina Kupina and journalist Klim Rogov, the unlucky governess Ada and the bribe-taking policeman Felix, a defrocked priest, a Buddhist monk, former White soldiers and officers — some of them were able to hold out, some broke. The fates of Russians, Czechs, Germans, Americans, Chinese, and Englishmen combined into a complex, variegated picture on the backdrop of one of the most dramatic periods of Chinese history.

While the refugees waited for their fate to be decided, Nina Kupina secretly initiated negotiations with some smugglers who had sailed in to find out if the Russians were selling weapons. She advised the captain to “write off” several crates of rifles and collected the money from the smugglers, but she only gave the captain half; he didn’t speak French and didn’t understand what price had been agreed on.
Nina asked the smugglers to take her into the city, in order to get to Shanghai before everyone else, before its residents had come face to face with the émigrés and had come to hate them for their poverty and wretchedness. Nina settled into the best hotel and opened a phony consulate of Czechoslovakia; the country had only just appeared on the map of Europe, and in China no one had ever heard of it. Making use of diplomatic status, Nina bought liquor duty-free and then sold it at a huge profit. She very much wanted to enter the high society of Shanghai, but the English and French snobs were in no hurry to accept her into their circles. And she didn’t associate with the Russians, who in the end were allowed into the city; she wasn't interested in tattered paupers.
Very few of them were able to find good work or open their own businesses: who needs you if you have no starting capital, no documents, and no knowledge of foreign languages? The Russians couldn’t even find work as manual laborers. Shanghai was steeped in racism; a white man didn’t have the right to compete with the Chinese rabble.
It was a bit simpler for young women; they could join a cabaret. There were plenty of foreign bachelors in Shanghai, and not enough women, so entertainment establishments were very popular. Fifteen-year-old Ada Marshall, American on her father’s side and Russian on her mother’s side, was left entirely alone; all her relatives were killed during the Civil War. She found work as a dancer in a restaurant at a bordello; they paid pennies, but Ada still hoped to save up for a ticket to the USA — the country where her aunt lived, and where everything should go differently.
It happened that she lived in the same room as Klim Rogov, an odd man. A former reporter, a wit and a joker, he helped everyone, arranged others’ fates, but didn’t let anyone into his soul. Over a period of several months he was unable to find work. Ada knew that he was terribly hurt by his wife’s betrayal — she was the same Nina Kupina who had run away from him secretly from the ship.
Klim was helped out by an American woman journalist, who invited him to work at the popular Shanghai newspaper North China Daily News. Things quickly started looking up for Klim, and soon he was given the position of main editor at a fashionable magazine.
Ada was also extremely lucky; she found work in a good house as a governess. Now she no longer had to drink wine and breathe tobacco smoke every night, and she made twice as much money. But a relative of her employers, Mr. Bernard, knew that she used to work in a bordello restaurant, and could betray her to her employers. Ada was very afraid of him, even though he swore he would take her secret to his grave.
Mr. Bernard was a well-known figure in Shanghai: the owner of a large tea company, a sportsman, a patron of the arts, and a sophisticated expert on Asian art. “Beware of him; that man is not what he seems!” Klim warned Ada. But he had his own reasons to hate Bernard. Klim knew that his wife Nina had started a shady scheme with him related to smuggling Japanese art, and this business relationship looked very much like flirtation.
Nina Kupina both amazed and frightened Ada: a strong woman who could make thousands of dollars out of thin air and who feared neither the police, nor fascist raiders, nor sly Jesuits. When the authorities sniffed out the fact that the Czechoslovakian consulate was a scam, Nina was placed under house arrest, but she wriggled out of that, too, by blaming everything on her recently deceased partner.
The police shot down a student demonstration, and a general strike began in the city; the Chinese refused to work for the white colonists. Here, too, Nina figured out how to make a profit; she visited the municipal authorities and promised the city fathers Russian workers who would happily replace the Chinese at the factories. In exchange she asked for a license to open a Russian security agency.
The security business brought good money in troubled times. The Great Powers and the USSR alternately helped the Chinese militarists monetarily in order to defend their own interests in the Far East. The rich poured into Shanghai from all over the country in hopes of waiting out hard times under the protection of English and American cannons. But in the city itself, the Green gang was operating; having gotten rich on the opium and weapons trade, the gangsters had unlimited power over the Chinese. Demand for the services of Nina Kupina’s guards went sky high; they were professional military men with colossal experience, plus they didn’t know Chinese and couldn’t conspire with the Green gang.
All this Ada learned from her fiancé, Felix Rodionov, who served in the colonial police. Felix was a graduate of the Cadet Corps; like all the Russian men, for a long time he couldn’t find work, and when he became a detective, the drug traders tempted him with bribes. Now he had money, but the criminals were constantly blackmailing him so that he would do what they told him. Ada closed her eyes to this; after all, she finally had a beloved man who would protect her from misfortune. When Felix was sent to trial, she spent her entire savings so that he would be sent to serve his sentence in Mexico. On the way he escaped and joined a Russian detachment in the service of one of the Chinese militarists. The White Guardists believed that if they helped the commander rout his enemies, he would help them organize an attack on Soviet Russia.
Klim Rogov found a job at a radio station and became one of the most popular hosts in the city. He didn’t give up hope of getting his wife back, but Nina was too caught up with Mr. Bernard — however, he didn’t return her interest. Soon Klim found out that he dealt not with tea, but with shipments of weapons to the Chinese communists and nationalists. In the South, General Chiang Kai-shek was preparing troops for an attack on Shanghai; he wanted to drive the foreigners out of China and unite the country under his power. Bernard joined up with his army as an advisor on aviation.
The communists and nationalists joined forces and in a short time brought the whole Southeast of the country under their control. The foreigners in Shanghai were seized with panic. It was impossible to make a deal with the communists — they took their orders from Moscow; Stalin was dreaming of turning China into the next Soviet republic. But Chiang Kai-shek was sticking with the Bolsheviks only because money for the war was coming from the USSR. The Shanghai merchants, the gangsters from the Green gang, and the foreigners — people who were infinitely distant from one another during peacetime — decided to work together in order to lure the General onto their side.
Nina accidentally encountered Mr. Bernard; he was returning to the city for aircraft engines. Corruption in the city was such that Shanghai served as a transshipment point for shipments of weapons to each of the warring sides simultaneously. Although Bernard did not ask Nina along, she decided to set off with him to Hankou, where the international detachment of aviators in the service of Chiang Kai-shek was. She didn’t know that not long before her departure, Bernard was captured and sentenced to death as a war criminal.
On the steamship Nina made the acquaintance of Fanya, the wife of head political advisor Mikhail Borodin, who was the leader of the Soviet delegation at Chiang Kai-shek’s headquarters. Fanya and Nina made friends, as far as that was possible — a staunch communist and a White émigré.
The ship was seized by a retreating detachment of Russian mercenaries in Chinese service. When he learned that Comrade Borodina was on board, Felix Rodionov ordered the arrest of all the passengers and crew. To avoid landing in prison, Nina said she was Fanya’s relative, and both women were sent to trial in Peking; they were accused of attempting a coup d’etat. The authorities knew perfectly well that the accusations were absurd; their goal was to blackmail Mikhail Borodin.
At that time Chiang Kai-shek’s troops took Shanghai; no one touched the foreigners, but in one night four thousand communists were slaughtered in the city: the General was staking not on the USSR, but on the West. Felix Rodionov, among other Russian mercenaries, was killed in battle, and Ada inherited his map case, which had several thousand dollars in it.
Nina sent a letter to Shanghai explaining that she had been taken prisoner. Klim set off to help her. In Peking he contacted the underground communists; they had received an order to free Fanya Borodina at any cost. For an enormous bribe of 200,000 dollars, the judge agreed to release the prisoners, but when Klim arrived at the courthouse, it turned out that Soviet embassy staff had taken Fanya and Nina away in an unknown direction.
Klim returned to Shanghai. Several months later he saw a newspaper in which an interview with Borodina had been published. She told about how she and Nina had been secretly sent across the Soviet-Chinese border. Klim realized that he should seek Nina in Moscow and set off for the USSR. At the port he met Ada; her dream had finally come true — she was going to America.

Компания «ЭкоНива» проводит большую работу по размножению и внедрению в производство новых, более урожайных сортов, испытанных и районированных Госсорткомиссией, а так же по производственному размножению перспективных сортов с высокими урожайными и технологическими свойствами. «ЭкоНива» ежегодно предлагает на рынок около 30 000 тонн генетически и технически качественных семян.
Высокая конкурентоспособность реализуемых семян складывается из комплекса факторов. Первостепенные из них: высокая культура агропроизводства и послеуборочной доработки семян, контроль качества и соблюдения технологии в поле, на участках подработки семян и при их реализации. Организацией и осуществлением этих мероприятий в рамках группы предприятий-сельхозпроизводителей ООО «ЭкоНива-АПК Холдинг» занимается отдел экспериментальных исследований подразделения «ЭкоНива-Семена». Пока в него входят три специалиста с высшим профессиональным образованием в сельскохозяйственной сфере: руководитель Вадим Цуканов, агроном-консультант Евгения Стрелько и лаборант-исследователь Ирина Колюбаева.
Ежедневно, независимо от сезона, сотрудники этого подразделения, выполняют кропотливую, но необходимую работу по текущему оперативному контролю качества сельхозпродукции. Начинается она с момента подготовки семян к севу в производственном размножении и продолжается вплоть до момента их отгрузки конечному потребителю. На семенные посевы в семеноводческих хозяйствах группы компаний «ЭкоНива» идут только элита и высшие репродукции сельскохозяйственных культур. При этом строго отслеживаются посевные качества семян, и по сортовой чистоте партии, где этот показатель менее 100% - бракуются.
Посевы культур семенного назначения возделываются по интенсивной технологии, с применением всего необходимого комплекса препаратов для защиты растений от насекомых-вредителей и заболеваний. На период колошения злаковых культур и образования генеративных органов у других полевых культур производится выбраковка некондиционных посевов. На этом этапе исключаются из семенного оборота будущие партии семян, не отвечающие предъявляемым к ним требованиям.
Следующий этап контроля качества - контроль уборки урожая. Это один из главнейших элементов, от правильного осуществления которого зависит потенциальная пригодность семян к дальнейшему размножению. От грамотной организации этого сложного процесса, а также технического вооружения зависит качество и сроки формирования семенных партий без возможности сорного и сортового засорения. Все семеноводческие хозяйства «ЭкоНивы» обладают необходимыми складскими площадями, позволяющими раздельно размещать каждую семенную партию, имеющую индивидуальный номер.
Дальнейшая работа экспериментального отдела направлена на плановый и индивидуальный анализы всех семенных партий в течение периода от послеуборочного размещения до постсортировочной упаковки семян в мешки с индивидуальными этикетками. Этот этап включает 2-х-4-х кратный анализ каждой партии, учитывающий послеуборочное дозревание и индивидуальные условия хранения. Конечный продукт этой работы - предложение сельхозпроизводителям лишь проверенного качественного семенного материала, отвечающего требованиям, предъявляемым как нормативными документами, так и конкретными пожеланиями заказчика.
Работа с покупателями на этом не заканчивается. После заключения контракта, сотрудники агрономического звена готовят весь пакет документов на отгружаемую партию семян, при отгрузке проводят отбор арбитражных образцов с составлением ведомости и акта приема-передачи товара и документации. Арбитражные образцы опечатываются, один экземпляр передается представителю покупателя, другой – остается на ответственном хранении в хозяйстве отгрузки семян. В случае, если покупатель не полностью удовлетворен поставленным товаром, специалисты экспериментального отдела и отдела логистики продаж выясняют причину разногласия. И в процессе переговоров всегда достигают урегулирования даже самых незначительных спорных моментов.
Функционирование системы контроля качества обеспечивается собственной контрольно-семенной лабораторией, расположенной в ООО «Защитное» Щигровского района Курской области. Лаборатория оснащена всем необходимым для проведения анализов оборудованием, инструментами и материалами. Основные из них: сортировочная машина Sortimat, термостат, сушильный шкаф, весы различных классов точности. Планируется запуск в работу канадской мини-сортировки, полностью имитирующей производственный цикл подработки семян в хозяйстве в условиях одной лаборатории. Работа по дооснащению и расширению семенной лаборатории компании «ЭкоНива», а также обучению и повышению квалификации её сотрудников не прекращается и совершенствуется с каждой произведенной тонной семян.

EkoNiva puts around 30,000 tonnes of genetically and technically high-quality seeds on the market each year.
The high competitiveness of the seeds sold is the result of many factors. The most important of these are a high level of agroproduction and after-harvest seed conditioning, and quality control and adherence to technology in the field, in seed conditioning areas, and in the sales process. The organization and implementation of these procedures within the framework of the OOO EkoNiva-APK Holding group of agricultural production enterprises is conducted by the experimental research department of the EkoNiva-Semena division. For now it includes three specialists with a higher professional education in the sphere of agriculture: Director Vadim Tsukanov, Agronomical Consultant Yevgenia Strelko, and Laboratory Assistant/Researcher Irina Kolyubayeva.
Each day, regardless of the season, the members of this division carry out meticulous but indispensable work on current operational quality control of agricultural production. It begins from the moment of preparation of seeds for planting in production propagation and continues right up to the moment of shipping them to the end consumer. Only the elite and highest reproductions of agricultural crops are used for planting at the seed farms of the EkoNiva group of companies. The sowing qualities of the seeds are strictly monitored, and if the variety purity is less than 100%, the lot is rejected.
Seed production crops are cultivated by intensive methods, using the entire complex of preparations necessary to protect the plants from insect pests and diseases. During the period of ear formation for grain crops and the formation of the generative parts of other field crops, culling of defective plants is conducted. At this stage future lots of seeds which do not meet standards are excluded from seed circulation.
The next stage of quality control is monitoring the harvest. This is one of the main elements whose proper implementation determines the potential fitness of seeds for further propagation. The quality and formation time of seed lots without the possibility of contamination with weeds and other varieties depends on the competent organization of this complex process, as well as the technical equipment. All of EkoNiva’s seed farms have the storage areas needed to allow separate storage of each individually numbered seed lot.
The further work of the experimental department is directed towards the systematic and individual analysis of all seed lots in the period from after-harvest storage to packaging the seeds after sorting in individually labeled sacks. This stage includes analysing each lot 2-4 times, taking into account after-harvest ripening and individual storage conditions. The final product of this work is the ability to offer agricultural producers only reliable, high-quality seed material which meets the standards of normative documents and the specific wishes of the customer.
Work with clients doesn’t end there. After signing a contract, members of the agronomical team prepare the entire package of documents for the lot of seeds being shipped; at the time of shipping, arbitration samples are taken and a register and a certificate of transfer and acceptance of goods and documentation are drawn up. The arbitration samples are sealed; one sample is given to the buyer’s representative, and the other remains in secure storage at the farm shipping the seeds. If the buyer is not completely satisfied with the goods delivered, specialists from the experimental and sales logistics departments ascertain the reason for the disagreement. In the process of negotiations, even the most insignificant controversies are always resolved.
The functioning of the quality control system is ensured by the company’s own seed monitoring laboratory, located at OOO Zashchitnoe in the Shchigry district of the Kursk region. The laboratory is furnished with all the equipment, instruments and materials necessary for conducting analyses. The most important of these are a Sortimat sorting machine, a thermostat, an exsiccator, and scales of varying degrees of precision. The introduction of a Canadian mini-sorter which completely imitates a farm’s seed conditioning production cycle in the conditions of one laboratory is planned. Work towards the further equipping and expansion of EkoNiva’s seed laboratory, as well as the training and professional improvement of its employees, never stops and is being perfected with each tonne of seeds produced.

Every morning at eight o’clock, when Father would go to the dining room to drink coffee, he would send his valet for us. Our nannies, Vava and Atya, would bring us. Father was usually dressed in a gray jacket and would sit in the corner on a divan at a small table on a dais.
In the dining room hung an enormous painting by Söderström, depicting the Swedish King Charles XII, who had been killed and was being carried on a stretcher by his guardsmen. Father loved paintings. In his receiving room in the Marble Palace, among other paintings, hung Kuindzhi’s “Night on the Dnepr”; Father bought it when he was a young naval officer. The painting appealed to him and he decided to acquire it. Kuindzhi answered, “It’s not for you, young man”; he didn’t recognize Father. Father acquired the painting anyhow, and when he set sail, he decided to take it with him. When Kuindzhi learned of this, he was planning to bring suit, as he thought that his famous painting would be ruined at sea. But Father took the painting anyhow, and no suit was brought.
