Forum: French
Topic: Traducteur assermenté près d'un tribunal judiciaire vs cour d'appel : quelles différences
Poster: Johann V
Post title: interprète-traducteur = CESEDA = Tribunal judiciaire ; traducteur expert judiciaire = Cour d'appel

It's not really an "opportunity". It's more of a request. The fact that you are requested to undertake a test doesn't mean that you've made it to one of the final rounds of candidates. There may be 20-30 people taking the test. Also, in the past, the agency would have had to spent money paying a reviewer to mark the test, but these days it's possible to mark the test using AI, so you may even be one of 100 people taking the test.
Nevertheless, I need to buy Trados in advance, which is very expensive [I think that I need the desktop version, the online option is not suitable as it does not open projects], so, my question is: how it is the work flow?
All of these are possible:
- They send an SDLXLIFF file, you translate it, you sent back an SDLXLIFF file.
- They send an SDLPPX file, you translate it, you sent back an SDLRPX file.
- They send an SDLPPX file, you translate it, you sent back an SDLXLIFF file.
- They ask you to log in to their Trados server via Trados, you translate the file(s), and click a button.
Considering that I do not use Trados for other apps, and that the pay is really low, I am wondering if I would be even able to cover the costs of Trados.
No, you will never recoup the costs of Trados. Trados is only useful for people who use Trados for a lot of clients or for high-paying clients. The modern version of Trados is a bit of a scam actually, because it's very expensive and translation rates have gone down tremendously in recent years (more so than in previous years).
thank you. That was the sharp answer that I neeeded to get!

Forum: Getting established
Topic: translating for Xerox
Poster: Ana Ferreira
Post title: True OmegaT works
Samuel Murray wrote:
Arjan van den Berg wrote:
If they send you Trados packages you can use OmegaT. It is free and can handle Trados packages very well.
I'm told that the latest version of OmegaT can treat Trados packages (SDLPPX files) as source files, so yes, OmegaT can open Trados packages.

But OmegaT can't create a return package (SDLPRX file), so you have to send the SDLXLIFF files back to the client (this is why you have to ask them if it's okay to do this, because some clients do not want SDLXLIFF files -- they want the return package).

Also, a Trados package often contains a TM and a glossary. OmegaT is incapable of reading a Trados TM or a Trados glossary (although there are free tools out there that can convert SDLTM to TXM or SDLTB to CSV, which you would have to do manually each time).

Finally, a Trados package typically contains the original source file as well, and Trados can use it to generate the final translated version of the file in its original format (and some clients ask that you generate it and then do a format check on it), but OmegaT can't do that either.

Also, OmegaT can't connect to a Trados server (but: I have only ever had one single client that required me to do that).

[Edited at 2026-08-14 08:58 GMT]
Thank you for your help. Yes, it is true that OmegaT works with Trados, I translated some projects using it. But, they told me that I would need to have Trados as a starting point. You can try it for free for two weeks or but the lighter version [web], but I think that there are limits on what you can do with that version, as well.

Besides, you must have noticed that I have a background in literature, and, in fact, I confess to having a controversial love for all 'broken' language writers, such as Beckett, Joyce, or Saramago. But it seems to happen a lot, especially with big companies that work across continents or that get a lot of contracts; this type of work could never be sold in 'bulk'. But, some countries are already goind back with the digital euphoria [France, Sweden], understanding that real books, handwriting, etc are an essencial part of the learning process. The same goes for translating. AI is handy in the supermarket. But, it does not work in some fields such as law or literature or science.

It is a pure statistical pattern which works by biasing word generation:

AI generates text one token at a time by sampling from a probability distribution over the vocabulary. Watermarking modifies that sampling process by combining a secret key with the previous tokens generated. This sampling then partitions the words to be generated into green (preferred) and red (discouraged) lists. The model is slightly biased to favor green-list words. The bias is very small, and the green/red partition is still random and changes with the context, such that the overall output remains close to normal.

The watermark has no physical or digital-object existence. There are no extra characters, no hidden Unicode, no metadata fields, no special bits hidden in the file. What exists is only a chosen statistical pattern of the token/word sequence. The only evidence of the watermark is that those words "happen" to match the secret rule more often than pure random results.

If you change enough words (or their order), the statistical match disappears and the watermark is gone. That means the only way to remove the watermark is by rather aggressive reediting.

[Edited at 2026-08-14 15:11 GMT]
I'd like to correct what I said previously.
Anthropic's watermarking is not the classic greed/red-list approach. It uses actually an opensource technique called “SynthID” from Google DeepMind and implanted in some Google products and Gemini models since 2023-2024. So for those who use Google/Gemini products, their output could have already carried Gemini fingerprint without them knowing it.

Contrairy to the classical dual red/green list, SynthID is a more sophisticated scoring mechanism that uses a g-function to pseudorandom sample tokens. It is more finegrained but the principle is basically the same.

AIs have much less leeway in selecting words and phrases when translating. I’ve tested numerous translations done by ChatGPT and Claude with AI detectors like GPTzero and Grammarly. They’ve always said the text was 100% written by a human.

I’m sure the AI detectors will be modified to look for the telltale pattern once the technique is deployed, so I’ll run another test. It’ll be interesting to see the result.
The watermarking is not perfect. There will certainly be false positives and false negatives, just as with AI detection tools. However, the techniques involved in both approaches are very different. Right now, most AI detection tools are supervised deep-learning or machine learning classifiers. They’re trained on labelled data, basically human-written vs. AI-generated texts, to spot the patterns “out there”, but Anthropic’s watermarking is processed inside the model with a predefined secret rule to modulate token generation. It’s more like laying a digital fingerprint on the model’s output. Translation generated by it will certainly bear that fingerprint, so that Anthropic’s tool can detect it. At least “theoretically,” watermark detection should be more reliable than those neural network recognition by an AI detection tool. People tried watermarking on their model say it works actually rather well.

But with translation, things could become a little bit trickier, because translation is a more “constrained” text generation than free writing. Higher level of constrain reduces what they call “entropy” (freedom of choice) of the model. Lower entropy tends to reduce either watermarking strength or text generation quality. There is indeed an unavoidable trade-off between detectability and output quality, esp. with more constrained text generation.

[Edited at 2026-08-17 12:29 GMT]
