...due to the high entertainment value. I estimate I have already spent over 20 hours (a large portion of which I would otherwise have spent working) watching debates in the House of Commons, reading Brexit-related news articles and perusing lunatic Brexiteer posts in online forums of British media outlets. It's like watching a train crash in slow motion.
So far, the effect has been positive (meaning more work): these last days I have been translating good-bye letters from some EU programmes sent to their UK counterparts, but after all this Brexit mess who knows what is round the corner? Who knows what kind of Brexit deal will be reached, if any? Who knows what is going to happen in the next months? More than three years on from the referendum, will the EU give a further extension? Can anyone come up with an answer to these interrogations? | | | Kay Denney France Local time: 15:44 French to English
It makes me bite my nails, obviously. I have already had to translate a file explaining that documents of UK origin have to be removed from EU databases in the event of Brexit so I've earned about €20 off it...

But to be perfectly honest, life will actually continue if it does happen..... | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 15:44 Spanish to English + ...
Not really, but it is kind of affecting my mental well-being. I just get so angry about it all, as I remember how hard it was for people like me to work legally in Spain before it joined the EU. And because the vote was won by cheating and manipulation of the terminally gullible by repulsive, self-serving (and tax dodging) vested interests. Better not get me started on that, then | | | Angus Stewart United Kingdom Local time: 14:44 Member (2011) French to English + ... Yes and it is negatively affecting my health too. | Apr 6, 2019 |
I fear that Brexit will affect demand for my translation services. I have encountered a marked decrease in translation requests since the start of the year and I wonder whether all the Brexit related uncertainty is the cause. In common with Neilmac it has negatively impacted my mental well-being and at one point I was so stressed out by it that I ended up in hospital. My general impression is that Brexit is fuelled by a politics based on xenophobia and hate. I am pinning my hopes on... See more I fear that Brexit will affect demand for my translation services. Personally, since a great part of my translation activity is for international organisations, in particular the EU, I have received many projects to be translated in connection with Brexit. Before, it was mainly related to terrorism. Topical issues that provide work in our profession.

I'm out of the orbit on this side of the Pond. The international organizations I work for are based in the Americas and/or use US English. Most of my assignments come in Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. I also get documents from Angola, Mozambique, and São Thomé, but not from Spain or Portugal. I used to spend time following these political issues (and the situation in the US), but I eventually realized that I would be better served by focusing on translation. Bett... As the dreary business drags on it becomes clearer day by day to more and more people that Brexit was a bad idea and should be cancelled. The last poll to show a majority in favour of it was in August 2017. That's why the Brexiters are so rabidly opposed to a second referendum: because they know they will lose it. It will still happen, though, and there will be a clear majority (>60%) for remaining in the EU. Then we can start to put this miserable period behind us. I doubt that the UK will ever... I doubt that the UK will ever recover the prestige and trust it has frittered away over the last three years, though. That may be an overoptimistic view, but for those who share it, time is on our side. ▲ Collapse | | | Mario Freitas Brazil Local time: 10:44 Member (2014) English to Portuguese + ...
