Could you rephrase the question?
Aug 16, 2005
Translating is my main source, or only source of income, as I work full time - but my husband earns at least as much as I do... usually more.
So it is not the family's main source of income, and I'm not sure how to answer the poll!
What have others decided? Cheers! Christine

Exactly the same situation (luckily)
I can't answer as long as the family is kept in the question.

My interpretation

I understand this as "to you" if you are single or only need to support yourself, "to your family" if you are supporting your family. So "yes" means that, whether you are single or in a family unit, translation work represents the main source of income (the largest chunk of money coming in, say 75% or more?); "No" means that there are other sources of icome that make up a large portion of the family budget. If you and your partner contribute 50/50 to the family budget, then I'd say the answer is "no". To put it in other words: could you (as single) or your family unit (if you are not single) live off your translation income alone?
(A couple of days ago I suggested another poll along similar lines, with more defined brackets, but it is not listed in the pending polls list yet) ▲ Collapse

Roberta is right

Hi Roberta
Many thanks - that's exactly what I intended.
A few days ago there was a poll discussing the annual revenues that translators were earning. Many, including Henry, the site founder, and myself thought the levels were quite low.
My question was indeed trying to establish whether a single person or a family unit can survive on a translator's pay.
