My experience - long hrs at the computer made no difference Aug 26, 2005

I've been short-sighted from an early age, with steep worsening between 14-18 yrs old, then levelling off at -7 diopters at age 18.

I've been using the computer for an average of 8 hrs/day since the age of 27. Now, after 17 yrs of intensive computer work, my sight is pretty much the same (actually, it improved slightly, I'm now down to -6 thanks to the post-40 far-sight effect!)

[In fact, to clear my brain and "rest my eyes" after long hrs at the computer, I knit and crochet miniature doll-house items in scale 1/12...)

I've also been shortsighted since my early teens. The rapid decline (by 0.25-0.5 dpt each year)lasted till well into my late 20s. Now, about 15 years later, I need -6.0 to -6.5 dpt, with a change of -0.25 dpt in the 5 to 7 years as a translator. I have now increased the regular check-up intervals from 1 year to about 2 to 3 years and hope that one day, when everybody else my age needs glasses, the "verdict" will be: the 40+ effects match the shortsightedness now, so you don't need glasses anymor... the past three years before I started as a freelance translator, I was responsible for the web site of a weekly news magazine, i. e. working on the computer approx. 8-10 hrs / day. My eyesight hasn't deteriorated yet. And even before that I worked with the computer quite a lot (4-5 hrs) for 5 years. Doesn't make a difference.

Has the staff's eyesight been affected too? Aug 26, 2005

Regardless of the state of my eyesight I find it somewhat sad that a site for translators posts a poll on its front page with incorrect grammar in the actual poll subject. I can't imagine the reaction of potential new outsourcers when they read something like this here.

The poll question should read "Has your eyesight been affected ..." or "Have your eyes ...".

This is not a criticism of the originator of the poll but a request for a little more "quality assurance" on t

Apologies in advance for any typos

Eyesight, no - eyes, yes Sep 12, 2005

My eyesight has stayed the same. Like Ms Robertson, I've been a mole since the age 7 and lost my left eye by the time I was 35. The other is a -7.00. This hasn't improved, despite the 40+ bonus

My eyes, however, are being affected by the continual use of the laptop. They are itchy, dry, and burning after just an hour of reading. Because I hammer-type in both languages, I look at the keyboard more than at the screen, s

My eyes, however, are being affected by the continual use of the laptop. They are itchy, dry, and burning after just an hour of reading. Because I hammer-type in both languages, I look at the keyboard more than at the screen, so my eyes don't hurt that much when typing - but reading is a major pain in the neck.

I have been translating for 22 years now, and I have to admit that the paper/ink combination and even the typewriter were gentler on our eyeballs than the LCD screen.

Oh, yes, please remember to blink.
