And then there was darkness.
Absolute, pitch darkness.
No moon nor stars to be seen.
A gentle wind blew through the trees, the noise acting like a decoration upon the darkness.
Abruptly the sound of a human's voice could be heard. It sounded like a young man, but slightly high pitched. "Well, y'know... it's kinda like that, and stuff..."
"Kinda like what and stuff?" another voice asked, seeking more. It sounded even more young than the first, like that of a boy.
Following a slight silence, the first voice rose again. It was quiet, and had a tone that suggested speaker was merely voicing their thoughts aloud as if there were no audience.
"Y'know, I sometimes feel like I'm just some useless, idiotic weakling. Or maybe I'm just a really disgusting human being. I don't know why but sometimes I feel that way. Sometimes I feel like there's no other way to think. But at those times, I think of other things - like the world, or the way other people live - and it's all so beautiful, all so amazing. I hold that feeling close. I want to know so much more about them all. And I think that's why I'm on this journey."

Source text - Japanese 白く光る小さな月が、雲の切れ間から顔を出す。冷たい風が吹く山道を、ひとつの影がゆっくりと進んでいた。
影は黙々と進み、やがて荒野に出た。夜明けとともに現れたのは、馬に乗ったひとりの若者だった。馬には白い布に包まれた荷物が積まれていた。
荒野を抜けた馬と若者は歩き続けた。悲しい涙のように降りしきる雨の中。すべてを焦がしつくすような灼熱の太陽の下。幾日をあり着続けたある日、遥かかなたに大きなアーチ橋が見えた。
何日かけてアーチ橋にたどり着き、さらに何日もかけてアーチ橋を渡り切ると、そこには大きな祠が待っていた。
祠の中には誰もいなかった。魔物の像がいくつも並ぶ回廊を奥まで進むと、そこには祭壇があった。
たどり着いた祭壇を前に若者は馬を降りた。白い布に包まれた荷物を馬から降ろし覆いを取ると、中からは、美しい少女の亡骸が現れた。若者は亡骸を静かに祭壇に乗せた。
Translation - English A small, whitely shining moon peeks out from behind a gap in the clouds. As a cold wind blows, a single shadow slowly travels through the mountain path.
The shadow continues in silence, and finally surfaces on a vast plain. What has arisen with the dawn is a youth astride a horse. The horse is carrying a burden bundled in a white cloth.
The youth and horse continue to walk past the plain. Through a downpour of rain like sorrowful tears; under a sun so scorching it could almost burn away everything.
Countless days of traveling later, an arched bridge appeared on the distant horizon.
Countless days to reach the bridge; countless more to cross it. Once they crossed the bridge, a grand temple awaited them.
There was no one inside the temple. The youth crossed a hall lined with countless monstrous statues. At the end of the hall was an altar.
The youth dismounted the horse in front of the altar. Carrying down the burden from the horse, he removed the white cloth it was wrapped in - from within the body of a beautiful maiden was revealed. The youth placed the body upon the altar in silence.
