A successful business only needs one entrepreneur, Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the founder of easyJet, told Times Online last year. "You also need somebody around who knows what they are talking about," he explained.
Recently, however, it has been arguable whether any of the myriad "easy" businesses has benefited from the attentions of even one wholly-committed business firebrand.
Since he floated Easyjet in 2000 and later stepped down as chairman, Stelios has been busy. He has opened a chain of internet cafes, a car rental service, screened films at his orange-fronted Milton Keynes cinema and revealed plans for a pizza delivery service. Meanwhile, he remains heavily involved with his family's listed shipping business and the source of his initial fortune, Stelmar, which he would like to see merged with OMI, the rival maritime company.
Looking to the future, he announced earlier this year that he was on the lookout for a passenger boat to fly the "easyCruise" flag. He is also fitting out a no-frills hotel in west London (which will trade as easyDorm) and launching a fleet of minibuses (you guessed it: easyBus). Add to the mix easyTelecom and easyMobile and you're looking at a rangy and time-consuming conglomerate.
This is not to say easyGroup has abandoned joined-up thinking. The binding ideas behind these disparate ventures have been "brand expansion" (the ubiquitous orange logo and "easy" tag) and "yield management" (the practice of tying prices tightly to demand).
But has the iconic entrepreneur spread himself too thin? Are his businesses growing, evolving and succeeding?
Recent signals have not been good. Weekend reports suggested that the easyInternet chain is to be much reduced, with the leases on some of the less-profitable and larger sites sold off.
A changing landscape stymied the project. In the UK, domestic internet tariffs have never been cheaper. Internet cafes now struggle more than ever to offer anything that many internet users cannot make use of at home.
The City may well have fallen out of love with the affable Greek. To be fair, he set himself a hard act to follow. But Stelios has failed to replicate easyJet's initial success elsewhere.
Costs, as anybody who has availed themselves of the "services" available on an easyJet fight could tell you, have already been cut to the bone. The European competition authorities have shown their teeth as far as preferential deals with airports are concerned. Volatile oil prices have not helped matters.
So, the business community is left to admire Mr Haji-Ioannou's initial golden touch but is bound to observe that it seems prone to tarnish. Perhaps a few more people who knew what they were talking about, and who had the ability to foresee changes in the business terrain ahead, were what were needed all along.
And perhaps, to reverse the maxim, Stelios would be better off limiting himself to one business at a time.

Μια επιτυχής επιχείρηση χρειάζεται μόνο έναν επιχειρηματία, είπε ο Στέλιος Χατζηιωάννου, ιδρυτής της easyJet, στο «Times Online» πέρυσι. "Χρειάζεστε επίσης κάποιο ο οποίος ξέρει για το τι μιλάει", εξήγησε αυτός.
Όμως πρόσφατα, είναι αμφισβητήσιμο εάν οποιαδήποτε από την μυριάδα των «easy» επιχειρήσεων έχει ωφεληθεί από τις προσοχές ακόμη και ενός πλήρης-δεσμευμένου επιχειρησιακού υποκινητή.
Από τότε που επέπλευσε την Easyjet το 2000 και αργότερα κατέβηκε ως πρόεδρος, ο Στέλιος είναι πολυάσχολο. Έχει ανοίξει μια αλυσίδα από Ίντερνετ καφετέριες, μια υπηρεσία ενοικίασης αυτοκινήτων, ταινίες προσβεβλημένες στον κινηματογράφο Milton Keynes με πορτοκαλή πρόσοψη και αποκάλυψε σχέδια για μια υπηρεσία pizza delivery (παράδοσης πιτσών). Οι δεσμευτικές ιδέες πίσω από αυτές τις ανεξάρτητες επιχειρήσεις είναι "επέκταση μάρκων" (το πανταχού παρών πορτοκαλί λογότυπο και η ετικέτα "easy") και "διαχείριση απόδοσης" (η πρακτική του στενού δεσμού των τιμών με τη ζήτηση).

Τα πρόσφατα σήματα δεν ήταν καλά. Σαββατοκυριακάτικες εκθέσεις πρότειναν ότι η αλυσίδα easyInternet πρόκειται να μειωθεί πολύ, αφού οι μισθώσεις σε μερικές από τις λιγότερο-κερδοφόρες και μεγαλύτερους ιστιακούς τόπους είναι εκποιημένες.
Ένα μεταβαλλόμενο τοπίο εμπόδισε το πρόγραμμα. Τα εσωτερικά δασμολόγια διαδικτύου δεν ήταν ποτέ φτηνότερα στον ΗΒ. Οι �Ιντερνετ καφετέριες αγωνίζονται τώρα περισσότερο από πάντα να προσφέρουν οτιδήποτε που πολλοί χρήστες διαδικτύου δεν μπορούν να χρησιμοποιήσουν στο σπίτι.
Η Πόλη μπορεί καλά να έχει ξε-ερωτευτεί τον ευπροσήγορο Έλληνα. Αμερόληπτα, ο Στέλιος ήθελε να ακολουθήσει μια σκληρή πράξη. Αλλά ο Στέλιος δεν κατάφερε να επαναλάβει αλλού την αρχική επιτυχία της easyJet's.
Όπως θα μπορούσε να πει οποιοσδήποτε έχει ωφεληθεί από τις διαθέσιμες «υπηρεσίες» σε μια πτήση easyJet, οι δαπάνες είχαν κοπεί ήδη στο κόκαλο. Ίσως ανέκαθεν απαιτήθηκαν λίγο περισσότεροι άνθρωποι που ήξεραν για ποιο πράγμα μιλούσαν, και οι οποίοι είχαν τη δυνατότητα να προβλέψουν τις αλλαγές στην επιχειρησιακή έκταση.
Και ίσως, για να αντιστρέψει το αξίωμα, ο Στέλιος θα είχε περισσότερη επιτυχία αν περιοριζόταν σε μια επιχείρηση τη φορά.

Source text - Greek Οι χαμηλής πυκνότητας λιποπρωτεΐνες (Low Density Lipoproteins, LDL) παίζουν οχι μόνο σημαντικό ρόλο στην έναρξη και την εξέλιξη της αθηρωματικής διαδικασίας αλλά και η μείωση τους έχει άμμεσο και αποδεδειγμένο κλινικό όφελος. Έχει αποδειχθεί ότι τα κλινικά επεισόδια μειώνονται όταν μειώνεται η πυκνότητα των LDL στο πλάσμα. Ενώ είναι γνωστή η ετερογένεια των LDL, δεν έχει σαφώς διευκρινιστεί η λειτουργία και η κλινική σημασία της.
Έχουν αναγνωριστεί 15 υποπληθυσμοί των LDL, οι οποίοι μπορούν να ταξινομηθούν βάσει της δομής και του τρόπου μεταβολισμού τους σε 3 μεγάλες ομάδες: α) ελαφρές, μεγάλες LDL, β) ενδιάμεσες LDL και γ) μικρές και πυκνές LDL. Οι μεγάλες LDL αποτελούν πρόδρομες μορφές των ενδιάμεσων και των πυκνών LDL. Οι μεγάλες και ενδιάμεσες LDL έχουν μεγάλη συγγένεια με τους LDL υποδοχείς και παρουσιάζουν μεγαλύτερη αντίσταση στην οξείδωση. Αυτό οδηγεί στο συμπέρασμα ότι η κάθαρση των μεγάλων και ενδιάμεσων LDL γίνεται μέσω μη αθηρογόνου οδού. Αντιθέτως οι μικρές LDL δύσκολα προσκολλώνται στους LDL υποδοχείς. Η κάθαρσή τους, γίνεται μέσω των υποδοχέων των μακροφάγων και του σχηματισμού στη συνέχεια των αφρωδών κυττάρων τα οποία σηματοδοτούν την έναρξη της αθηρωματικής διαδικασίας. Γνωρίζοντας ότι κάθε μόριο LDL είναι συνδεδεμένο με μία απολιποπρωτεΐνη (apolipoprotein, apo) Β, ένας έμμεσος τρόπος υπολογισμού του μεγέθους των LDL είναι η μέτρηση της apoB. Το μέγεθος των LDL μπορεί να καθορίζεται γενετικά (οικογενής συνδυασμένη δυσλιπιδαιμία) ή να επηρεάζεται από τα επίπεδα άλλων λιπιδίων όπως τα τριγλυκερίδια.
Γίνεται έτσι κατανοητό το αποτέλεσμα πρόσφατης ανάλυσης της μελέτης CLAS (Cholesterol Lowering Atherosclerosis Study) που έδειξε ότι η ευνοϊκή δράση της χολεστυραμίνης περιορίστηκε μόνο στα άτομα εκείνα με τριγλυκερίδια > 190 mg/dl. Στη μελέτη STARS φάνηκε ότι η υποστροφή των αγγειογραφικών βλαβών συσχετίζεται με τη μείωση των μικρών LDL. Ασθενείς με συμπτωματική στεφανιαία νόσο έχουν σε μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό μικρές και πυκνές LDL συγκριτικά με υγιή άτομα. Αυτή η διαφορά καθιστά σαφή τον αυξημένο κίνδυνο που εγκυμονεί η παρουσία των μικρών LDL στο πλάσμα που οφείλεται στο ότι οι μικρές LDL διαπερνούν ευκολότερα το αγγειακό ενδοθήλιο συγκριτικά με τις ενδιάμεσες ή τις μεγάλες LDL και οξειδώνονται ευκολότερα όταν βρεθούν στον έσω χιτώνα. Με τη σμίκρυνση του μορίου (μικρές LDL) μετακινείται η apoB δυσκολεύοντας ακόμα περισσότερο τη σύνδεση των LDL με τους αντίστοιχους υποδοχείς. Έτσι έχουν περισσότερες πιθανότητες πρόσληψης από τα μακροφάγα. Επιπρόσθετα οι μικρές LDL διεγείρουν τη σύνθεση και έκκριση της θρομβοξάνης από τα ενδοθηλιακά κύτταρα, ευοδώνουν θρομβωτικά φαινόμενα και αυξάνουν τα επίπεδα του μεσοκυττάριου ασβεστίου με αποτέλεσμα την αύξηση του αγγειακού τόνου και δυνητικά την πιθανότητα του σπασμού. Σ' αυτό συμβάλλει και το ότι εξουδετερώνουν τη δράση του "ενδοθηλιακής προέλευσης παράγοντα χάλασης" (EDRF). Υπεύθυνα για τη δυσλειτουργία του ενδοθηλίου δεν είναι μόνο το μέγεθος των LDL αλλά και ο αριθμός τους. Δεν είναι τυχαίο το ότι ο Austin ονόμασε τις μικρές πυκνές LDL "pattern B phenotype", θέλοντας μ' αυτό τον τρόπο να δείξει ότι πρόκειται για ξεχωριστή οντότητα ίσως και ξεχωριστή νόσο.
Translation - English The low density lipoproteins (Low Density Lipoproteins, LDL) play not only important role in the beginning and the development of the athiromatic process but also their reduction has immediate and proven clinical profit. It has been proved that the clinical episodes are decreased when the density of LDL in the plasma is decreased. While the heterogeneity of LDL is known, its functionality and clinical importance have not been explicitly clarified.
There have been recognized 15 LDL subpopulations, that based on their structure and way of metabolism can be categorized in 3 large groups: a) light, large LDLs, b) intermediary LDLs and c) small and dense LDLs. The big LDLs constitute early forms of intermediary and dense LDLs. The large and intermediary LDLs have close kinship with their LDL receptors and present bigger resistance to the oxidation. This leads to the conclusion that the purification of the large and intermediary LDLs is done via non-atherogenetic way. On the contrary the small LDLs attach with difficulty on their LDL receptors. Their purification is done via the macrophages� receptors and via the subsequent formation of foamy cells, which signal the beginning of athiromatic process. Knowing that each LDL molecule is connected with a B apolipoprotein (apolipoprotein, apo), an indirect way of calculating the size of the LDLs is the measurement of apoB. The size of LDLs can be determined genetically (family related dyslipidemia) or can be influenced from the levels of other lipids such as the triglycerides.
Thus the result of a recent analysis of the CLAS study (Cholesterol Lowering Atherosclerosis Study) that showed that the favorable action of cholestiramine was limited only to those individuals with triglycerides > 190 mg/dl, becomes comprehensible. In the STARS study it appeared that the wearing of the angiographic damages is connected with the small LDLs decrease. A larger percentage of patients with accidental coronary illness have small and dense LDLs, comparing with healthy individuals. This difference explicitly states the increased risk that indicated by the presence of small LDLs in the plasma, which is due to the fact that the small LDLs penetrate more easily the vascular endothelium comparing with the intermediary or the large LDLs, and they oxidize more easily when found in the inner membrane. Due to the diminution of the molecule (small LDLs) apoB is moved, thus complicating even more the connection of LDLs with the corresponding receptors. Thus they have more probabilities of engagement from the macrophages. Moreover, the small LDLs stimulate the composition and thromboxine secretion from the endothelial cells, advance thrombolytic phenomena and they increase the intercellular calcium levels, having as result the increase of vascular tone and potentially the probability of convulsion. This is added to the fact that they neutralize the action of "endothelium derived relaxation factor" (EDRF). For the endothelium dysfunction not only the size of the LDLs is responsible, but also their number. It is not accidental that Austin named the small dense LDLs as "pattern B phenotype", wanting to show that it is a separate entity, and perhaps a different illness.
