על מנת לשרוד בחיים הפוליטיים, כל מפלגה מחויבת בהצלחות אלקטורליות מתמשכות. ייצוג עקבי בפרלמנט יאפשר את הישדרות הארגון, ואילו העדרו יגזור על מפלגת כיליון. הקשר הסימביוטי בין הישדרותה של המפלגה לייצוגה הפרלמנטי טמון בעצם הגדרתה. לשיטתו של שומפטר, "מפלגה היא קבוצה שחבריה מבקשים לפעול יחד במאבק תחרותי על השלטון"; לאסוול וקפלן טענו כי "מפלגה היא קבוצה המנסחת מצע בבעיות כוללות ומציגה מועמדים לבחירות"; ואילו חוק המפלגות הישראלי קובע כי מפלגה היא "חבר בני אדם שהתאגדו כדי לקדם בדרך חוקית מטרות מדיניות או חברתיות ולהביא לייצוגם בכנסת על ידי נבחרים".
בניגוד למפלגות גדולות או מתונות, שמהוות סוכני קשר (linkage) לגיטימיים בין החברה למדינה וזוכות לפיכך בייצוג פרלמנטי עקבי ונרחב, מפלגות קיצוניות שרויות בבעיה. הן מתקשות בדרך כלל להפך לסוכן לגיטימי המקשר בין חברה לשלטון. מעצם טבען מדובר במפלגות פריפריאליות, קטנות, עניות במשאבים ובמקרים רבים אף מוקצות. אם כן, כיצד הן יכולות לחצות בכל זאת את המהמורות הללו?

In order to survive in political life, each party is bound to continuous electoral successes. Consistent representation in the parliament allows the organization to survive, whereas its absence leads to annihilation. The symbiotic link between the party’s survival and its parliamentary representation is ulterior in the definition of a party. By Schumpeter’s definition, “party is a group, whose members wish to act together in a competitive struggle over the power”; Laswell and Kaplan claimed that “a party is a group formulating a platform of general issues and brings candidates into elections; on the other hand, the Israeli Political Parties Act establishes that a party is “a group of people who form an association in order to promote by legal means political or social objectives and to obtain their representation in the Knesset through elected deputies”.
In contrast to big or moderate parties, which are legitimate linking agents between the society and the state, hence winning a broad and consistent parliamentary representation, the radical parties have a dilemma. They generally have difficulties with becoming a legitimate linking agent connecting society and government. By their nature, these parties are peripheral, small, short of resources and in many cases even rejected. If this is the case, how are they able to pass through these traps anyway?

The aim of the book “Israeli - a beautiful language” is to examine whether the language that Israelis speak is indeed a Semitic language or a Euro-Asiatic one - both Semitic and Indo-European. The view of Zuckerman, presented in the introduction, is that the birth of Israeli Hebrew is a ‘hybridization’ - Israeli language is a result of crossing between Semitic Hebrew, European Yiddish, as well as other languages (p.12). He also argues that Hebrew and Yiddish are the main contributors to Israeli language, although there was some contribution by other languages as well. The book has three parts. The first part - the beginning of the Israeli language: facts and myths- has three chapters: Israeli and Hebrew languages compared, origins of Israeli language and common myths about Hebrew. The second part - ‘The grammatical influence of Yiddish and other European languages on Israeli language’ - has four chapters: pronunciation, morphology, syntax and vocabulary. The third part - ‘The hidden influence of Yiddish and other European languages on the vocabulary of Israeli language’ - has four chapters: direct translation, phono-semantic matching, phono-semantic matching of Yiddish words and phono-semantic matching of international words. The book finishes with two appendices - Israeli and Yiddish dictionaries and Gershom Scholem’s letter to Franz Rosenzweig. The numerous comments are compiled after the appendices and the extensive bibliography is presented at the end of the book.

Another example of how more attention to Polish sources is necessary in order to understand developments within the Jewish community relates to Israel ben Eliezer, known as the Baal Shem Tov, or the Besht. Generally viewed as the founder of Hasidism, the Besht lived from approximately 1700 until 1760. Jewish sources about him are largely legendary in character, and the question of their utility to history is a controversial one. Depending on the interpretation of these sources, the Besht has been characterized during the last hundred years as both a charlatan and a saint. Some have even questioned whether he actually existed. Now, at last, the tax lists from the town of Międzybóż where he lived have been consulted. Not only do they conclusively demonstrate that he lived, but they show that he probably was not - as is often thought - a social critic and rebel against the officially recognized, organized Jewish community. In fact, the Polish records show that the community gave him (and later his son) a house to live in free of rent and taxes, and even paid a weekly stipend to some of his followers.
