Translation - English The organization calls for more efforts needed to tackle the growing obesity
Obesity levels have risen in most countries over the past five years, with the economic crisis being a factor that has probably contributed, according to a survey by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which highlights the growth of the epidemic in countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland.
"The economic crisis may have contributed to a higher growth in obesity, so most governments need to do more to stop this rising tide," said the expert in OECD Health and one of the authors of the study, Michel Cecchini.
The report shows that the lack of financial resources has increased and families are spending less on healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. The poorest households have had to change their diet to calorific junk food.
A survey, released on Tuesday shows that most people in OECD countries are overweight or obese. This is causing a social and economic consequence which is being described as "dramatic" because it involves exposing a growing number of people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
According to data released, on average 18% of the adult population is obese. We must also take into account that more than one in three adults in Mexico, New Zealand and the United States, and more than one in four in Australia, Canada, Chile and Hungary are obese, which is well above the half.
Meanwhile, one in five children are overweight, however this rate is higher in countries like Greece, Italy, Slovenia and the USA where it affects one in three children. Although some countries have managed to stabilize or even slightly reduce rates of childhood obesity, they are still tackling high rates of obesity in adults.
Overall, "obesity has been broadly stable in countries like England, Italy, Korea and the United States, but has increased between 2 and 3% in Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, Spain and Switzerland”.
Moreover, the report notes that obesity is also an inequality problem, which particularly affects women, even those who are educated. It is therefore observed that "people who are educated are now as likely to be obese than those who are less educated”. This is the case in countries with very high levels of obesity as Mexico and the US.
Statistics in Spain
In Spain the adult obesity rate is above average since one of every 6 adults is obese, and more than 1 in 2 overweight. The latest statistics show that the proportion of overweight adults has generally increased in recent years, although at a slower pace than anticipated by the previous OECD projections rhythm.
We can also see that men who are less educated are 1.6 times more likely to be obese than men with higher education; Similarly, women who are less educated are 2.4 times more likely to be obese than more educated women. However, the prevalence of obesity has increased in the three education groups analysed since 2001.
Rates of children who are overweight are high also in Spain compared with other OECD members, where 26% of men and 24% of girls are overweight, compared with 23% of boys and 21% of girls average in OECD countries.
As for the measures taken by some countries to prevent obesity from rising further, Mexico highlights that it launched a broad government strategy to address the problem in 2013, including advocacy, health care, regulatory and fiscal measures.
"Several countries have developed multi-stakeholder frameworks, involving business and civil society in the development of public health policy actors. The evaluations of the effectiveness of these initiatives are to follow," he says.
Spanish to English: El Aborto General field: Medical
Fotografía: Liz McBurney para The Guardian.
Translation - English Abortion
It was the scariest thing I've ever done’: the Irish women forced to travel for abortions
Every year, thousands of women come from Ireland to England for abortions – illegal at home, and punishable in Northern Ireland by life imprisonment. These are their stories
At least 4,500 women from Ireland travel to England each year for an abortion. Photograph: Liz McBurney for the Guardian
By 10.30am, 10 minutes before her first appointment, Catriona is already grey-faced with exhaustion and so tired that talking is a struggle; her words fall out on top of each other. She is six weeks pregnant and has travelled overnight by boat from a small town an hour outside Belfast to Liverpool for an abortion. She took the boat because it was cheaper than flying and because she had no passport, and didn’t have the money or the time to get one; but it has been a difficult journey and she hasn’t slept. Tonight, after the procedure, she will go back by boat, a second night sitting bolt upright, trying to sleep. This is her first trip to England.
“A lot of bad things have happened to me in my life, but this has been the worst,” says the 28-year-old single mother who, like all the women I spoke to for this article, did not want to use her real name. It’s not the abortion itself that is troubling her; she has two sons already, and no desire to expand her family. It’s the difficulties involved in getting herself, at short notice, to England for a medical procedure considered a criminal offence punishable by life imprisonment in Northern Ireland. In total, the cost of the round trip and the abortion will come to about £570. Over the past three weeks, while saving for the journey, she has cut down on the food for the family and hasn’t bought oil to heat the house. “We’ve been going to my mum’s house, where there’s a fire; she’s been giving food to the boys.”
Catriona hadn’t realised abortion law in Northern Ireland was so restrictive. When she told her GP she didn’t want to keep the baby, the doctor said she couldn’t help her and that travelling to England was the only option; she gave her a piece of paper with a telephone number for the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, who booked her into the Liverpool clinic.
'I didn't tell the children, or my friends – I think they'd be sympathetic, but most are Catholic and think it's a sin'
Northern Ireland’s abortion laws have added multiple layers of stress to an already difficult situation for Catriona – expense, secrecy, stigma and logistical difficulties. “I’m not feeling too well,” she says. “I don’t know if it’s tiredness or the travelling, the thinking what is going to happen, the wondering if it’s a good thing or a bad thing.” Her mother’s boyfriend has made the journey with her, to give her support, but no one else apart from her mother knows she is away. “You feel like it has to be a big secret. I didn’t tell the children. I haven’t told my friends... I think they would be sympathetic, but most of them are Catholic and think it’s a sin, so I never mentioned it. There’s so much negativity about it. They make it out to be so bad. You still know it is right for you, but in your head you are thinking, maybe it is bad.”
