Source text - Spanish El primer desarrollo de la investigación sobre el impacto psicosocial del desempleo tuvo lugar en la década de los 30, en el contexto de un aumento sin precedentes de las tasas de desempleo provocado por la crisis económica del 29. En las investigaciones realizadas en este período, las consecuencias del desempleo fueron descritas, generalmente, como un deterioro significativo de la salud mental, una disminución de la autoestima, una pérdida del sentido del tiempo y una gran apatía, que tuvo sus manifestaciones tanto en la disminución de todas las actividades cotidianas como en la inexistencia de una respuesta política al desempleo por parte de los desempleados.
Tras el paréntesis histórico de las décadas de los 50 y los 60, la recesión económica de 1973 y sus hondas repercusiones en el mercado laboral hacen que el desempleo vuelva a convertirse en uno de los mayores problemas sociales y económicos de los países occidentales. La creciente preocupación por las dimensiones psicológicas y sociales del desempleo promovió un nuevo desarrollo de la investigación psicosocial sobre el tema. Si bien la investigación sobre el impacto del desempleo fue inexistente en nuestro país durante los años 30, esta situación ha cambiado en la actualidad, comenzándose a desarrollar a mediados de los 70 los primeros estudios sobre las consecuencias psicosociales del desempleo.

Translation - English The first developments in research on the psycho-social impact of unemployment took place in the 1930s—a time in which there was an unprecedented increase in unemployment, brought on by the economic crisis of 1929. In the investigations carried out during this period, the consequences of unemployment were described generally as: a significant deterioration in mental health, a decline in self-esteem, a loss of the perception of time and extreme apathy, (which manifested itself both in the reduction in all daily activities carried out and in the lack of a political response to unemployment on the part of the unemployed).
After the historic respite of the 1950s and 1960s, the economic crisis of 1973 and its profound effect on the jobs market once again made unemployment one of the main social and economic problems faced by Western countries. Growing concern over the psychological and social factors of unemployment fostered new development in psycho-social research in the area. Although research on the impact of unemployment was non-existent in Spain during the 1930s, nowadays, the situation is different, with the first studies on the psycho-social consequences of unemployment starting in the mid-1970s.
