O Cerrado perdeu 28 milhões de hectares de vegetação nativa, uma área equivalente ao estado do Rio Grande do Sul, entre 1985 e 2019. Foi um terço de toda a vegetação nativa que o Brasil perdeu no período. Essa área representa, em 35 anos, uma redução líquida de 21%, que é a diferença entre perda da vegetação original e ganho da vegetação recuperada.
Com isso, hoje o segundo maior bioma do país tem 53,2% de cobertura de vegetação nativa, ou 19% do que é registrado nesta categoria em todo o Brasil.
Os dados são da Coleção 5 do MapBiomas (mapbiomas.org), iniciativa multi-institucional que envolve universidades, ONGs e empresas de tecnologia, focada em monitorar as transformações na cobertura e no uso da terra no Brasil, e foram recém-divulgados em um evento para pesquisadores e público em geral no Dia do Cerrado (11 de setembro).
O MapBiomas também mostra que atualmente 44% da área do Cerrado é ocupada por atividades agropecuárias, com um incremento de 25 milhões de hectares em 35 anos: 72% desse aumento foi para a agricultura, especialmente de grãos. “É possível perceber visualmente a mudança, em áreas no sul do Cerrado e no Matopiba (região que engloba o Cerrado nos estados do Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia)”, disse a diretora de Ciência do IPAM (Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia), Ane Alencar. No MapBiomas, o instituto é responsável pelo mapeamento da vegetação nativa do bioma.
Nesta conversão de vegetação nativa para outros usos, as formações florestais sofreram mais, por estarem em áreas com solos mais férteis, enquanto as formações savânicas têm visto o desmatamento aumentar, por causa da topografia.
“Precisamos mudar nossa realidade para que o restante do Cerrado não tenha o mesmo destino do que foi destruído”, disse o professor da Universidade de Brasília Ricardo Machado, especialista em Cerrado, que participou do evento. “Não podemos deixar que o processo simplesmente continue para mostrar para os nossos netos quando determinado pixel foi desmatado, mas devemos provocar mais estudos e políticas públicas.”
Nesse sentido, Machado afirma que o conhecimento hoje produzido sobre a conversão de outros tipos de vegetação nativa além das florestais é suficiente para que se amplie também a proteção do Cerrado. Na mesma direção, o coordenador de monitoramento da TNC Brasil, Mario Barroso, destaca a importância do MapBiomas na busca por soluções.
“Antigamente, porque os dados oficiais olhavam somente para as formações florestais, parecia que o desmatamento só acontecia neste tipo de vegetação. O MapBiomas mudou essa percepção. O que importa é o que está acontecendo no campo de forma explícita”, afirma Barroso. “Para problemas complexos, as soluções também são complexas. Há de se discutir o papel das empresas, mas também a questão da grilagem e da titulação de terra, por exemplo.”

Translation - English Cerrado loses nearly 30 million hectares of native vegetation in 35 years
The Cerrado, Brazil's savanna region, lost 28 million hectares of native vegetation, an area equivalent to Ecuador, between 1985 and 2019. That's one third of all native vegetation that Brazil lost in the period. This area represents, in 35 years, a net reduction of 21%, which accounts for the difference between the decrease of original vegetation and increase of recovered vegetation.
Thus, the country's second largest biome now has 53.2% of native vegetation cover, or 19% of what is registered in this category in all of Brazil.
The data comes from Collection 5 by MapBiomas (mapbiomas.org), a multi-institutional initiative involving universities, NGOs and technology companies, focused on monitoring the transformations of land cover and use in Brazil, and was recently announced during an event open to researchers and general audience on National Cerrado Day (September 11).
MapBiomas also shows that currently 44% of Cerrado area is taken over by agricultural activity, with an increase of 25 million hectares in 35 years: 72% of this increase went to crop cultivation, mainly grains. “The change can be observed visually, in the southern areas of the Cerrado and in Matopiba (the region that comprises the Cerrado in the northeastern states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia)”, said Ane Alencar, Director of Science at the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM). At MapBiomas, the institute is responsible for mapping native vegetation of the biome.
With the conversion of native vegetation for other uses, forest formations have suffered more, due to being in areas with more fertile soil, while savanna formations have seen deforestation increase, due to the topography.
“We need to change our reality so that the rest of the Cerrado does not encounter the same fate as the portion that has been destroyed”, said University of Brasília professor Ricardo Machado, Cerrado specialist, who participated in the event. “We cannot allow the process to simply continue to show our grandchildren when a certain pixel was deforested, but we must instigate more studies and public policies.”
In this respect, Machado states that the knowledge produced today on the conversion of other kinds of native vegetation apart from forests is enough to expand protection of the Cerrado as well. In the same direction, the monitoring coordinator at The Nature Conservancy Brazil, Mario Barroso, highlights the importance of MapBiomas in the search for solutions.
“In the past, because official data only looked at forest formations, it seemed that deforestation only occurred in this type of vegetation. MapBiomas has changed that perception. What matters is what is explicitly happening on the field”, says Barroso. “For complex problems, the solutions are also complex. We should discuss the role of companies, but also the issue of land fraud and land titling, for example.”

They are all examples of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity that UNESCO has recognized since it began anointing such things in 2003, racking up more than 500 different practices and traditions so far.
Italy now hopes to inscribe yet another custom to that list: Italian espresso.
“We know very well how important coffee is to Italians, to Italians living abroad and to people around the world who have learned to appreciate something that is also a ritual and an occasion for encounter” and the dissemination of culture, said Maria Chiara Gadda, a lawmaker with Italia Viva, who spoke at a media launch of the coffee campaign in Rome on Tuesday.
Italians do love their coffee. According to the Italian Coffee Committee, a trade group, there are more than 800 coffee roasters in Italy, and more than 150,000 cafes that make espresso. In 2018, Italians consumed 5.9 kilos, or 13 pounds, of coffee per capita.
But traditional Italian espresso is not just any coffee.
“It’s the only coffee in the world that has a cream,” said Giorgio Caballini di Sassoferrato, the founder and president of the consortium sponsoring the candidacy.
Turkish coffee, which made the list produced by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in 2013, is boiled three times, he explained. American coffee is percolated through a filter, while in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland (which tops the European list for coffee consumption per capita, he noted) coffee is lightly toasted and consumed at the dinner table, “like a beverage.”
“Other products don’t have cream,” Mr. Caballini di Sassoferrato said.
That’s not nothing. Espresso cream, as per the regulations drafted by the consortium, “must be uniform and persistent for at least 120 seconds from the time the coffee has been dispensed without stirring,” according to a news release. The cream, according to the regulations, must also be “consistent, a dark hazel color, with light streaks.”
To be traditional, espresso must also be made using a bar coffee machine, by a trained ‘‘barista,’’ or cafe operator. The coffee must be freshly ground, and brewed for 20 to 27 seconds.
There are also regulations regarding the type of cup (porcelain with a narrow bottom), amount of coffee in the cup (between 13 and 26 grams) and its temperature, between 90 and 96 degrees Celsius.
Stove top Moka espresso machines and coffee capsules do not count. “We have nothing against capsules,” Mr. Caballini di Sassoferrato said. “We aren’t against any type of coffee, we are for our method.”

Os italianos amam bastante seu café. Segundo o Comitê Italiano do Café, um grupo comercial, há mais de 800 torrefações de café na Itália, e mais de 150.000 cafeterias que fazem o espresso. Em 2018, os italianos consumiram 5,9 quilos de café per capita.
Mas o espresso italiano tradicional não é um café qualquer.

“Outros produtos não possuem crema”, conta Caballini di Sassoferrato.
Isso não é pouca coisa. A crema do espresso, segundo regulações traçadas pelo consórcio, “deve ser uniforme e persistente por pelo menos 120 segundos a partir do momento no qual o café foi extraído, sem misturar”, de acordo com um comunicado de imprensa. A crema, de acordo com as regulações, deve ser também “consistente, cor de avelã escura, com riscas claras”.
Para ser tradicional, o espresso também deve ser feito usando uma máquina profissional de café, por um “barista” ou operador de café treinado. O café deve ser moído na hora e extraído de 20 a 27 segundos.
Também há regulações quanto ao tipo de xícara (porcelana de fundo estreito), quantidade de café na xícara (entre 13 e 26 gramas) e sua temperatura, entre 90 e 96 graus Celsius.
Cafeteiras italianas (ou Moka) e cápsulas de café não contam. “Não temos nada contra as cápsulas”, afirma Caballini di Sassoferrato. “Não somos contra qualquer tipo de café, estamos em favor do nosso método”.

A plataforma ressalta que a expressão é nove vezes mais buscada no Brasil do que as do ‘plant based’, termo usado para diferenciais produtos de origem não-animal em países onde esse mercado já está bem desenvolvido, como os Estados Unidos.
O Google realizou uma pesquisa com 4.335 internautas de todo o País em novembro de 2019 por meio da ferramenta Google Survey. A pesquisa mostra que 16% dos brasileiros já se declaram vegetariano ou vegano.
A pesquisa revela também que 57% dos brasileiros entrevistados afirmam estar dispostos a reduzir o consumo de carne pelo menos uma vez por semana.
Entre o público que se mostra favorável a experimentar ao menos um dia da semana sem carne, 39% fazem parte dos chamados ‘millennials’, que nasceram entre 1981 e 1996.
Com a chegada de novos produtos feitos de carne vegetal no mercado brasileiro, espera-se um crescimento ainda maior. Nos Estados Unidos, por exemplo, onde a categoria está melhor estabelecida e apresenta diversidade de produtos oferecidos, as buscas por ‘plant based’ são oito vezes maiores do que no Brasil.
“A oportunidade é gigante e a indústria de alimentos deve acompanhar essa tendência com inovações igualmente grandes para conseguir endereçá-la”, explica Marco Bebiano, diretor de negócios para Bens de Consumo, Tecnologia e Governo do Google Brasil.
Atualmente, as buscas sobre ‘carne vegetal’ no Google se dividem em questões ligadas à conhecimento (37%), como terminologias e conceitos, produtos segmentados (36%) para a substituição direta da proteína animal, receitas (23%) adaptadas ao universo sem carne e lugares especializados (4%), como restaurantes, padarias, açougue e mercados.
No campo do conhecimento, entre as dúvidas mais buscadas no Google pelos brasileiros estão: “O que é carne vegetal?”, “Como fazer receita prática vegana?”, “O que é plant based?”, “O que eu como em um dia vegano?” e “O que é flexitarianismo?”.
Popularização da carne vegetal no Brasil
Algumas redes de fast food começaram a anunciar a comercialização de hambúrguer vegetal no cardápio. No segundo semestre deste ano, personalidades brasileiras se manifestaram sobre o assunto, o que talvez tenha chamado atenção e despertado a curiosidade do público.
Em setembro, Paola Carosella criticou o hambúrguer vegetal. “Se quer comer, coma plantas com gosto de plantas”, declarou a chef no Twitter ao dizer que o alimento tinha muitos componentes químicos para deixar semelhante ao sabor e textura da carne.
Após a repercussão, Paola foi defendida pela colega Rita Lobo. “Tem gente que enxerga no comentário dela crítica ao veganismo. É muita cegueira”, disse a culinarista.
Em outubro, Ana Maria Braga fez questão de cozinhar e experimentar hambúrguer vegetal, ao vivo, no programa Mais Você. “Eu achei que fosse muito pior do que é”, avaliou a apresentadora da TV Globo.

In the knowledge field, among the questions most searched for by Brazilians on Google are: “What is vegetable meat?”, “How to make a practical vegan recipe?”, “What is plant based?”, “What do I eat on a vegan day?” and “What is flexitarianism?”.
Popularization of vegetable meat in Brazil
Some fast-food chains have started announcing vegetable burgers on their menu. In the second semester this year, Brazilian personalities spoke out about the subject, which may have called the attention and piqued the public’s curiosity.
In September, Paola Carosella criticized the vegetable burger. “If you want to eat it, eat plants that taste of plants”, the chef declared on Twitter, saying the food had many chemical components to make it similar to the flavour and texture of meat.
After the repercussion, Paola was backed up by her colleague Rita Lobo. “There are people who see criticism towards veganism in her comment. That’s blindness”, said the culinarian.

Source text - English Information fabrication is not new. As Guardian columnist Natalie Nougayrède has observed: “The use of propaganda is ancient, but never before has there been the technology to so effectively disseminate it”. So, it is important to understand the historical context when examining and reporting on contemporary manifestations of what has been termed a 21st-century ‘information disorder’.
Misinformation, disinformation and propaganda have been features of human communication since at least the Roman times when Antony met Cleopatra. Octavian waged a propaganda campaign against Antony that was designed to smear his reputation. This took the form of “short, sharp slogans written upon coins in the style of archaic Tweets.” These slogans painted Antony as a womaniser and a drunk, implying he had become Cleopatra’s puppet, having been corrupted by his affair with her. Octavian became Augustus, the first Roman Emperor and “fake news had allowed Octavian to hack the republican system once and for all.”
The invention of the Gutenberg printing press in 1493 dramatically amplified the dissemination of disinformation and misinformation, and it ultimately delivered the first-large scale news hoax – ‘The Great Moon Hoax’ of 1835. The New York Sun published six articles about the discovery of life on the moon, complete with illustrations of humanoid bat-creatures and bearded blue unicorns. Conflicts, regime change, and catastrophes then became markers for the dissemination of disinformation.
As one-to-many communications developed in the 20th century, especially with the advent of radio and television, satirical news evolved, sometimes being mistaken as the real thing in news consumers’ minds. Finally, as this guide illustrates, the arrival of the internet in the late 20th century, followed by social media in the 21st century, dramatically multiplied the risks of misinformation, disinformation, propaganda and hoaxes. Both errors and fraudulent content now go viral through peer-to-peer distribution (many-to-many communication), while news satire is regularly misunderstood and reshared as straight news by unwitting social media users. We now inhabit a world with computational propaganda, state-sponsored ‘sock-puppet networks’, troll armies, and technology that can mimic legitimate news websites and seamlessly manipulate audio and video to create synthetic representations of any number of sources. In this environment, where trust becomes polarised around what “news” aligns with their views, many news consumers feel entitled to choose or create their own ‘facts’. Combined, these developments present an unprecedented threat level that can drown out journalism, as well as contaminate it with the implication that there is nothing to distinguish it from false and fraudulent information more broadly.
This learning module designed to be used by journalists, journalism trainers and educators (along with their students) provides historical context for the analysis of the 21st century ‘fake news’ crisis. Relevant case studies and a timeline are designed to better inform users about the causes and consequences of ‘information disorder’– from harassment of journalists by ‘troll armies’ to the manipulation of elections and diplomatic crises. While news media have historically been caught up in disinformation and misinformation, including through news hoaxes, this is not regarded as legitimate in the dominant contemporary paradigm across different news media. This explains in part why contemporary manifestations of disinformation and misinformation are mainly evident in social media systems – with grave risks to authentic journalism and to open societies more broadly.
The current crisis includes the ‘weaponisation’ of information by many governments, as well as abuse by an industry of public relations companies often under contract to political entities and actors. This risks an ‘arms race’ of disinformation efforts, which is arguably a recipe for mutually assured contamination of information environments in general as well as high potential blowback. Where disinformation campaigns have been exposed, the result has been major damage to the actors involved – both the implementing agencies and their political clients (see the cases of Bell-Pottinger and Cambridge Analytica below).

Agora habitamos um mundo com propaganda computacional, ‘redes de marionetes’ patrocinadas pelos estados, exércitos de trolls e tecnologia que pode imitar sites jornalísticos legítimos e manipular perfeitamente áudio e vídeo para criar representações sintéticas e um sem-número de fontes. Neste ambiente, em que a confiança se torna polarizada em torno de quais “notícias” se alinham com seus pontos de vista, muitos consumidores de notícias se veem no direito de escolher ou criar seus próprios ‘fatos’. Combinados, estes desenvolvimentos representam um nível de ameaça sem precedentes que pode silenciar o jornalismo, assim como contaminá-lo com a insinuação de que não há nada para distingui-lo de informação falsa e fraudulenta mais amplamente.
Este módulo de aprendizado concebido para ser usado por jornalistas, treinadores de jornalismo e educadores (junto a seus alunos) fornece contexto histórico para a análise da crise de ‘fake news’ do século 20. Estudos de caso relevantes e uma linha do tempo são concebidos para melhor informar usuários sobre as causas e consequências da desordem de informação – do assédio de jornalistas por ‘exércitos de trolls’ à manipulação de eleições e crises diplomáticas. Embora mídias jornalísticas historicamente têm se envolvido em desinformação e má informação, inclusive através de farsas jornalísticas, isso não é considerado legítimo no paradigma contemporâneo dominante entre diferentes mídias jornalísticas. Isso explica em parte por que manifestações contemporâneas de desinformação e má informação são evidentes principalmente em sistemas de mídias sociais – com graves riscos ao jornalismo autêntico e a sociedades abertas mais amplamente.
A crise atual inclui a ‘armificação’ da informação por muitos governos, assim como abuso por uma indústria de empresas de relações públicas muitas vezes sob contrato por entidades e atores políticos. Isso arrisca uma ‘corrida armamentista’ de esforços de desinformação, que é provavelmente uma receita para a contaminação mutuamente assegurada de ambientes de informação em geral assim como efeito bumerangue de alto potencial. Onde campanhas de desinformação foram expostas, o resultado foi de graves danos aos atores envolvidos – tanto as agências implementadoras quanto seus potenciais clientes (veja casos de Bell-Pottinger e Cambridge Analytica abaixo).

Being born in Malaysia, English was my first language at home and at school. At the age of 11, I moved to Brazil, my mother’s home country, where I graduated in journalism and worked as an EFL teacher. I am now an EN<>PT-BR accredited translator by the Brazilian Association of Translators (ABRATES) and an English reviewer.
My training in journalism and experience in the classroom helped hone my language and research skills, and I pride myself in delivering not merely translations, but well-written texts that communicate efficiently.
Possessing a bilingual and multicultural background is also valuable to my work as a translator. Besides that, as a language enthusiast, I am currently studying Italian, have tried my hand at French and Spanish, and hope to someday recover the Malay I used to speak as a child.
