Source text - Russian Подводя итоги проведённого исследования, можно заключить, что ориентационная метафора часто используется для выражения идеи движения, при этом, движение вниз метафорически чаще выражает деградацию, упадок, негативные изменения. Также исследование инаугурационных речей показало, что для политического дискурса характерны такие метафорические модели, как: «ДЕГРАДАЦИЯ – ЭТО ДВИЖЕНИЕ ВНИЗ», «ПОДЧИНЕНИЕ ВЛАСТИ ОРИЕНТИРОВАНО ВНИЗ».
В большинстве случаев ориентационные метафоры английского языка, выстроенные на основе концепта «under»/«низ», представленные в форме фразовых глаголов, являются стёртыми и, вероятно, не воспринимаются реципиентами как метафоры. Это может быть оправдано той установкой, что изобилие ярких образных средств лексического уровня способно привести к излишней эмфатичности инаугурационной речи, что будет негативно воспринято, а также сделает выступление несерьёзным или непонятным существенному числу населения. При этом количество свежих метафорических образов, выстроенных на основе пространственных концептов, в инаугурационных речах является незначительным по сравнению с устоявшимися ориентационными метафорами, которые зафиксированы в лексикографических источниках. В связи с этим можно предположить, что ориентационные метафоры прочно вошли в состав английского языка, активно используются говорящими и понятны для аудитории. Существование набора проверенных временем метафорических моделей позволяет создавать новые ориентационные образы на их основе.
Сопоставительный анализ американских инаугурационных речей и их переводов на русский язык позволяет сделать вывод о том, что пространственная метафоризация на основе концепта «under»/«низ» свойственна обоим языкам. Переводчик по возможности стремится передать идею движения вниз, но в случаях стёршихся метафорических образов ориентационная метафора в переводе может опускаться.
Translation - English To sum up the results of this research we may conclude that orientational metaphor is often used to express the idea of moving. The idea of moving down often reflects degradation, decadence and negative changes. Moreover, the analysis of inaugural addresses shows that such metaphorical models as DEGRADATION IS MOVING DOWN and SUBMISSION IS ORIENTED DOWN are typical of political discourse.
In most cases, orientational metaphors in the English language are created through the concept “under”/“низ” and are reflected by phrasal verbs, and they are not understood by a recipient as metaphors. It can be explained by the assumption that plenty of vivid imagery means on the lexical level may add extra emphatic quality to the inaugural address, and thus it can be interpreted in a negative way or seem frivolous and obscure to a greater part of the listeners.
In inaugural addresses the number of fresh (new) metaphorical images created with the help of spatial concepts is insignificant compared to established orientational metaphors which are included in dictionaries. Due to this fact, we may suppose that orientational metaphors are part of the English vocabulary because they are used by speakers and their meaning is clear to the audience. Existence of many constant metaphorical models contributes to creating new orientational images and thus to appearance of new lexical units which in the course of time may be added to the lexical fund of the language.
The comparative analysis of American speeches and their translations into Russian makes it possible to conclude that spatial orientation based on the concept “under”/“низ” is a characteristic of both languages. This proves the idea that many conceptual metaphors originally developed because of basic human experiences, and that is why they occur in so many languages, even when the languages are not related. In many cases, the translator tries to preserve the idea of moving down, however, in cases when he deals with trite metaphor sometimes it turns out to be omitted.
English to Russian: The Perceived Effectiveness of Mindfulness Meditation as a Metacognitive Practice in Conversational English Performance of Russian Adults for the ESL Online Classroom (Research conducted by Dr. Marshelle Lee Machtan) General field: Other Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English Risks: The guided mindfulness meditation method associated with this study is low risk due to its short duration and guided practice. Hence, this study is not associated with any long-term or unguided meditation health effects. However, it has been reported that meditation may induce some physical and psychological discomfort. For example, some knee and back pain from sitting in an uncomfortable position. Hence, participants are encouraged to practice in a comfortable body position that may be maintained for 6-8 consecutive minutes, such as sitting in a chair or lying down.
As the purpose of mindfulness is to increase attention and self-awareness, participants may encounter some troubling thoughts and feelings with which they are presently dealing or suppressing. Furthermore, some participants may encounter the sensation of “depersonalization” that involves disconnection, ennui, emptiness, and possibly fear.
Participants with pre-existing mental health issues may be at an increased risk for anxiety and depression. It is not the intention of this study to utilize meditation for therapeutic or clinical treatment. The occurrence of individuals who possess such pre-existing conditions and participate in this study is coincidental and any negative side-effects unintentional. Moreover, this mindfulness approach is not meant to repress, pacify or disempower individuals by encouraging them to gloss-over serious issues occurring inside or outside the Self.
Benefits: Practicing mindfulness meditation, even in short-form, assists in increasing metacognitive skills – the awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes – which correlate with a student’s cognitive skills – how knowledge is acquired. Improved metacognitive and cognitive skills affect not only academic performance, but also other aspects of a person’s life. Hence, both student SRL skills in the online classroom and professional soft skills in the workplace may improve with mindfulness meditation practice. Here, conversational English is the dependent variable that is being tested for change utilizing the independent variable of daily guided meditative practice. Hence, an improvement in conversational English in the classroom should subsequently transfer into the student’s communication skills in the workplace.
Translation - Russian Риски: Метод медитации, направленной на самоосознание, применяемый в рамках настоящего исследования, обладает низким риском благодаря свой короткой продолжительности и выполнению под руководством наставника. В связи с этим, предполагается, что настоящее исследование не способно вызывать продолжительные побочные эффекты и бесконтрольно воздействовать на здоровье участника. Тем не менее, известно, что медитация способна вызывать некоторый физический и психологический дискомфорт, например, небольшую боль в колене или спине из-за нахождения тела в неудобном положении. Таким образом, участников призывают заниматься в удобном положении, которое можно сохранять в течение 6-8 минут, например, сидя в кресле или лежа на горизонтальной поверхности.
Так как целью курса по развитию самоосознанности является повышение внимания и самосознания, участники могут испытывать некоторые тревожные мысли и чувства, которые у них в настоящий момент есть, или под воздействием которых они находятся. Кроме того, у некоторых участников может появиться чувство деперсонализации, апатия, ощущение пустоты и, возможно, страх.
Пациенты с ранее диагностированными психологическими проблемами могут подвергнуться более высокому риску развития тревожности и депрессии. Целью настоящего исследования не является использование медитации для терапевтического или клинического лечения. Присутствие и участие лиц с такими ранее диагностированными отклонениями в настоящем исследовании является случайным, а любые отрицательные побочные эффекты – непреднамеренными. Более того, данный подход к самоосознанию не ставит целью подавить, усмирить или лишить лиц веры в собственные силы, заставляя их маскировать серьезные проблемы внутри или вне Себя.
Преимущества: Даже в течение короткого времени занятия медитацией, направленной на самоосознание, помогают развить метакогнитивные навыки – осознание и понимание своих собственных мыслительных процессов, находящихся во взаимосвязи с когнитивными навыками обучающегося, которые отвечают за процесс приобретения знаний. Усовершенствованные метакогнитивные и когнитивные навыки оказывают воздействие не только на показатели в обучении, но также на иные аспекты жизни человека. Таким образом, навыки самостоятельного обучения на онлайн-курсах и навыки межличностного общения в профессиональной сфере способны существенно улучшиться после прохождения практик по медитации, направленной на самоосознание. В данной ситуации разговорный английский представляет собой зависимую переменную, которая подлежит тестированию на предмет изменения с использованием независимой переменной (ежедневной медитационной практики под руководством наставника). Таким образом, улучшение разговорного английского на занятии должно впоследствии привести к развитию коммуникативных навыков студента в профессиональной среде.

My name is Irina.

I graduated from the university as a linguist in 2004.
In 2004, I was offered to work as a teacher at the Department of Linguistics and Crosscultural Communication in that University. I grew from an assistant teacher to an associate professor. In 2008, I obtained my PhD in Philology (Linguistics). My thesis was based on the translation analysis.
In 2012, I left University for the Oil and Gas company where I worked first in the position of First Category Expert and then as the Deputy Head of the Linguistic Department. I dealt with translating, copyediting and proofreading.
It should be mentioned that I have a certificate in TV Journalism (a two-year course during my senior grades at school).
I always do my best to organize translations in well-written, coherent, high-quality texts, while my attention to detail allows me to discover every subtle spelling, grammar or stylistic mistake.
