Nada.
Translation - English A Crack in the Tower
I felt the night close in, enveloping the house. And in some place, at some moment during that endless period of time, I heard the timid little voice of Esperanza, the maid, inviting me in from the door of the tower. It was a warm sunset, and I was telling my cousin just how clearly I could see myself again in the middle of the Claramunts’ living room, just arrived from the south, alone, full of hope and in high spirits, with my ears pricked up to catch the slightest sound in the house. I buried my hands deep into those worn pockets of my old ‘Prince of Wales’ double-breasted suit which sweat and poverty had left threadbare. I contemplated the big portrait of the patriarchal founder and his factories presiding over the family home (the grandfather with his twenty chimneys in the background, seven more than he ever really had, Nuria pointed out, because he was conceited). But let’s get to the important point: what did I know about the misfortune which was already afflicting Montse and that home when I arrived? Nothing.
