Source text - English The grand tour the future Tsar Nicholas II took to Asia is most notable for what it tells us about the changing focus of Russian imperial interests in the late 1800s. During the first half of the nineteenth century, St. Petersburg's attention had very much been fixed on Europe. Tsarist diplomacy was particularly occupied by efforts to profit in the Balkans and the Near East from the Ottoman Empire's infirmity. When Nicholas's grandfather, Alexander II, succeeded to the throne in 1855, however, his realm was reeling from a major military setback in the Crimea after a conflict involving Ottoman Turkey backed by other powers.

Извержение вулкана на острове Санторин стало причиной невероятного по силе землетрясения. В наступившую позднее микенскую эпоху Фест становится ахейским городом. Матала остается его единственным выходом к морю и большим торговым путям. Для многих ученых остается загадкой, почему фестские владыки еще в глубокой древности перенесли свой основной порт из Коммос в Матала.
Ситуация на острове меняется коренным образом ближе ко второму веку до н.э., когда Крит захватывают римляне. Матала тоже оказывается в гуще событий. Дело в том, что еще в 13-м веке до н.э. город Гортина стал дорийским полисом, подобно Спарте, Коринфу и Аргосу. Полис был своеобразным городом-государством, со своим сводом законов, денежной системой, армией и, порой, даже диалектом. К приходу на остров легионов под командованием Квинта Метелла Гортина уже была столицей всего Крита. Translation - English In the 15th century BC the palace age ended. The Minoan civilization perished overnight. The volcano eruption on Santorini island caused an earthquake of unprecedented power. In the successive Mycenaean age Phaistos became an Achaean city. Matala remained its only exit to the sea and major trade routes. For many scholars it is still a mystery, why in great antiquity Phaistos lords moved the main port from Kommos to Matala.
The situation on the island changed dramatically in about the second century BC, when Crete was conquered by the Romans. Matala found itself in the centre of events too. The fact is that as far back as in the 13th century BC Gortyna city became a Dorian polis, like Sparta, Corinth and Argos. A polis was a city-state, with its own corpus of laws, monetary system, army, and sometimes even a dialect. When legions led by Quintus Metellus came to the island, Gortyna was already the capital of all Crete. The city gave up to the Roman authority and thereby won the honor to retain its dominating status. The new masters of Crete did not like the fact that the only southern port was subject to Phaistos. Besides, Matala harbor was well-known everywhere in the Mediterranean.
