Para impulsar las relaciones de Alemania con Latinoamérica se formó un nuevo consejo económico de los empresarios Alemanes para la región con la función de informar sobre las características y tendencias de los mercados.
A instancias de México se creó la denominada Comisión 2000, entidad no gubernamental de especialistas de todas las áreas para analizar las posibilidades intensificar las relaciones bilaterales.
“Alemania de una gran importancia a sus relaciones con América latina”, expresó a Visión Miguel Berger, primer secretario y director de prensa de la embajada Alemana en México. “Una muestra del interés por estrechar las relaciones es la gran feria industrial Technogerma, una enorme presentación de la industria alemana que se organiza cada tres o cuatro años”. Señaló Berger.
Si bien Alemania se concentró en los últimos años en los efectos de la reunificación, también apunto sus capitales hacia Europa Oriental, incluida Rusia. El otro megamercado que está en la mira es Asia.
Aunque la incertidumbre ocasionada por la devaluación de la moneda mexicana disgustó a muchos inversionistas, para otros la actual situación de México es sólo un bache en el camino hacia los grandes negocios.
En América Latina el Brasil fue para Alemania el lugar elegido para invertir. El segundo país fue la Argentina, “aunque últimamente este lugar fue ocupado por México”. En términos generales Alemania es el segundo socio comercial de México después de Estados Unidos, aunque con una diferencia muy grande en inversión directa. Siempre existió un déficit mexicano en el comercio de México con Alemania y la Unión Europea (UE).
Sin embargo preocupó “muchísimo” a los Alemanes que después de la entrada al acuerdo norteamericano de libre comercio (TLC o NAFTA) las exportaciones mexicanas a Europa hayan bajado un 35 por ciento, excepto en Alemania. Se piensa que fue uno de los resultados de Technogerma.
En 1993 Alemania exportó a México 2,600 millones de dólares en tanto México vendió solo 482 millones de dólares. Pero la crisis financiera del país amenguó el intercambio; hasta octubre de 1995. Alemania había vendido a México 2,218 millones de dólares mientras que le compró por 394 millones. Pese a esto, en América Latina, México es para Alemania “el socio número dos detrás de Brasil”.
En los últimos años la presencia económica de Alemania por inversión directa fue la siguiente: En Brasil, 7,200 millones de dólares; México 3,000 millones; Islas Caimán 1,900 millones; la Argentina, 1,700 millones y Chile, 150 millones.
Aunque ningún país latinoamericano figura entre los principales socios comerciales de Alemania, existen posibilidades de mejorar la relación. “Hace falta un esfuerzo común del gobierno mexicano las posibilidades del mercado europeo”.
“La puerta de entrada a Europa son las grandes ferias mundiales de industria, comercio y servicios”, expresó Berger. “Sin embargo, es algo que los mexicanos todavía no valoran lo suficiente”.
México exporta a Alemania automóviles y sus partes; también máquinas de oficina, productos electrotécnicos, previos químicos y farmacéuticos, zapatos, café y “algo muy importante”: casi toda la miel que consume Alemania es mexicana.
Otros sectores con potencial para entrar en la relación comercial son as maquiladoras. El sector agrícola y el petróleo están descartados. Alemania exporta a México bienes de capital, maquinaria de todo tipo y herramientas, autos y sus partes.
La inversión históric acumulada suma para México 5,200 millones de dólares. Pero la Secretaría de Comercio (SECOFI) registra cifras netas de tal suerte que la cantidad aumentaría en forma significativa si se tuviera en cuenta la reinversiones de las empresas y los capitales que se canalizan a través de terceros países.
Ante los vaivenes de la economía mexicana frente al desempeño del NAFTA o TLC la confianza en México se mantiene.
La mejor muestra para esto es que le UE expresó el firme interés de llegar a un acuerdo económico, incluso de negociar un tratado de libre comercio.
“Se aprecia la estructura macroeconómica sana de México y se tienen muy en cuenta la membresía en la Organización para la cooperación y el Desarrollo Económico (OCDE)”, puntualizo Berger. “Siento que México tiene prácticamente todos los datos que son importantes para el inversionista”.

In bond assembly plants are other potential sectors to go into commercial relations. Farming and oil are ruled out. Germany exports to Mexico capital goods, all kinds of machinery and tools, cars and parts.
Investment to date for Mexico is 5,200 billion dollars. But the Ministry of Trade (SECOFI) registers net figures; consequently, the amount would increase significantly if company reinvestment and capital channeled through third countries where taken into account.
Despite the ups and downs of Mexico’s economy regarding NAFTA, confidence in Mexico still stands.
The best proof is that the EU has expressed firm interest in reaching an economic agreement, even negotiating a free trade agreement.
“The sound macroeconomic structure of Mexico is well appreciated as well as its membership in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCDE) -said Berger. I feel that Mexico has practically all important aspects for investors.”

Translating a passage from one language into another is an effective exercise for bettering one{s command of both the vernacular and the foreign language. In pedagogy, the teaching of a foreign language, through translation, is called the indirect method. A century ago, schools in England taught composition to the students by means of translation and it is evident that they had very gratifying results.
Translation is an effective exercise for learning exact, powerful, vivid words, therefore, in order to achieve his aim, the student must be alert to the exact meanings of the terms. He has to discipline his mind in the art of detecting which is the exact word, the one that fits in. He has to learn the art of using synonyms through which he can secure a pleasing variety in his mode of expression. Synonyms , however, cannot be used interchangeably. No matter how well a given word may express a meaning, it is not satisfactory unless it is accurate and smooth in relation to the tone of the writing and the rhythm of the passage.
The translator should acquire a wide vocabulary in the specific field he is dealing with. Everybody assumes, of course, that a translator is gifted with an extensive general vocabulary; furthermore, that he masters the structure of the languages to be translated by him.

Sin embargo, los sinónimos no pueden usarse indiscriminadamente. No importa cuán bien una palabra expresa su significado, y no será satisfactoria, a menos que sea fluida en relación con el tono de la literatura y su ritmo.

Source text - English Four months and 25 days later though, the pain is not relieved. I wonder, wonder if it ever will.
Such a blessing to have you around, always there doing what is possible: praying, callings, visiting, giving support and even the impossible in an effort to extend life, and offer comfort. Cheering me to keep trying and keep focused on health, becoming health’s guardian thru me.
And then if that is not enough, you carry methrough those strange moments where life slows down in numbness and everything around you falls away into unimportant darkness, hurt, confusion, and gives me consolation, guidance and the comfort you most need. You hold my hand when the world becomes surreal and you are floating in it without seeing or comprehending what lays ahead of you.
Now when I am left alone, staring into the void that surrounds me, when the golden chain of family link is broken and my being is convulsed, you are still there guiding me thru the pattern of pain and helping me look from darkness into the daylight of life, a strong deep person wise enough to allow me to grieve in the depth of who I am, and strong enough to hear my pain without turning away, so that I continue with the thankfulness of having had what I once had, its great memories and its legacy.
I think I may be coming out of the anesthetic, dreamlike state, and I check things out.

There must be something in the air that keeps me going, keeps me breathing, because when I get ambushed by the realization of what I am going thru I still cannot believe it. I cannot breath or believe I am living a life without what had, but I guess I am….you know? all those sad, romantic songs of a missed love are true. It really is when you feel your heart breaking to pieces, the yearning…oh, romantic songs, so rough to listen to them, romantic songs. And oh yes, to listen to a whole bunch of other things in our daily lives as well.
My work contract has also come to an end, so I will no be using my work’s e-mail address. My home address is the one that stays with me.
I think of all of them often, family, friends, the community, you. Always there, always pending, all those e mails and phone calls, how they must also hurt. Most of all I think of the blessing of having them in my life –This is food for my soul –I say to myself.
Still getting a lot of emails, I thank them profoundly, though I will not answer them separately because it will take me years. I am glad they keep writing, I sure fear losing touch with the people that care for me, just like I fear a whole bunch of things nowadays.
I move thru darkness, working, settling the estate, changing account names, putting things in order, the house, the papers, the insurances, the cars, the biography, the albums, the pictures, the stone, the list has been endless and, of course hurting like hell, which takes a toll on my energy level. Little by little everything gets done but for now I’m really happy to be off from work, until the next one comes, to be able to be home and do my thing, maybe pamper myself a bit and do what I want to and not what I have to!!!
But best of some done, I meet the kids in Mexico, have some quiet quality time for a whole week. It is nice to see another place, an enlightening break from darkness. But, as all firsts, thoughts and memories ambush me in the strangest places. We do not go sightseeing, but go to the market, eat out a lot, take walks, enjoy the fresh air and bring to light happy memories of old times. It is a comfort to be with the kids, to embrace them and to just to watch them together, enjoying each other. We used to cherish watching what we had created out of love.
Of course coming back home is a shocker. It hits me hard to realize that I come back to the same pain and all, where every time a turn around I am surrounded by thoughts, by such a close past. Very few times they are a blessing that brings a smile but most, they come full of heartbreak and unanswered questions like why??? Why?? It’s amazing what one can take; must check myself back again.
-You’re living, you are breathing, keep moving! –you say.
A year has passed….. It brings me back to a beginning 30 years ago. A separation never anticipated, never coming close to knowing the real issues that would face me, the narcotic regression in which I was wrapped in the care of others and the gravity and meaning of the occasion. Nor I knew ahead of the fact the unending absence that follows: the void, the very opposite of meaning, my connection vanished, my untargeted thoughts and ideas and, that I would be mourning myself, as I was, as I am no longer, as I will not be anymore, with a life leftover to kill. So I try hard to reconstruct every event of the last year in an effort to change that final outcome, with no success.
I do not want this year to come to an end, I am keeping time by last year’s calendar. What was I doing, where did I go, who did I meet? After tomorrow my past will be only me and I will have to start letting go of that other past, a past that slowly will not be the center of my days seems a betrayal.
One year and nine months pass…I am dreaming of a light that smiles at me.
An angel that comes to my rescue, it moves, it cries. It looks like one of the kids has had a child of his own. And in this dream I fly, it is impossible not to follow the light and I find myself setting up tent in an unknown place.
And there you are again, cheering me to focus on the light, becoming life’s guardian thru me, someone who believes that the sun will rise again but who does not fear my darkness. Someone who can point out the rocks in my way without making me a child by carrying me. Someone who can stand in thunder and watch the lightning and believe in a rainbow.

Y ahora, cuando me quedo sola, mirando el vacío que me envuelve, cuando la cadena de oro del eslabón familiar se rompe y mi ser convulsiona, sigues allí guiándome, por el sendero del dolor, ayudándome a ver desde la oscuridad hacia la luz de la vida. Una persona fuerte y profunda, con suficiente sabiduría que me permite sufrir en lo profundo de mi ser y suficientemente fuerte para oír mi dolor sin darse vuelta, para que continúe agradeciendo haber tenido lo que tuve, sus buenas memorias y su legado.
Pienso que estoy saliendo de un estado anestésico y somnoliento, y me examino a mí misma y a los míos.

-¿Cómo es posible?
Cuando me embosca la realización de los sucesos, es difícil creer su certeza, no puedo respirar. No puedo creer que exista una vida sin lo que en un momento tuve, pero supongo que sí. Debe haber algo en el aire que me mantiene en movimiento, respirando, es difícil comprender. Todas esas tristes canciones románticas de un amor perdido son ciertas; indubitables cuando sientes el corazón quebrantado y ese anhelo. Ah…canciones románticas; duras de escuchar, canciones románticas; tan duras como muchas otros hechos durante nuestra vida diaria.
Mi contrato de trabajo también llegó a un final y no usaré más esa dirección de correo electrónico. La dirección de casa es la que se queda conmigo.
Pienso en todos a menudo, en la familia, en los amigos, en la comunidad, en ti… ¡Cómo están allí, siempre pendientes! Tantos correos y llamadas, cómo deben sufrir también. Pero lo que más pienso es en la bendición de tenerlos en mi vida. “Este es alimento para mi alma”, pienso para mis adentros.
Sigo recibiendo muchos correos y lo agradezco profundamente, aunque no los contestaré separadamente porque me tomaría años. Estoy contenta de que sigan escribiendo. Definitivamente temo perder contacto con la gente que me quiere, así como temo cada instante hoy en día.
Me muevo por la oscuridad, atareada, arreglando el patrimonio, cambiando nombres, poniendo orden en casa -en papeles, seguros, automóviles, la biografía, el álbum, las fotos, la lápida- la lista no tiene fin y, por supuesto el desconsuelo se mantiene hasta el infierno, lo que cobra caro en mi nivel de energía. Poco a poco todo se hace y por el momento estoy contenta de no tener que trabajar, para estar en casa y hacer lo que quiero y no lo que tengo que hacer, talvez mimarme un poco.
Logradas algunas faenas, me encuentro con mis hijos en México, pasamos momentos tranquilos y de calidad toda una semana. Se disfruta otro lugar diferente a la oscuridad, es enriquecedor. Y como cada primera vez, los pensamientos y la memoria me acechan en los lugares más extraños. No hacemos excursiones, pero vamos al mercado, comemos afuera, caminamos, gozamos del aire libre y traemos a luz memorias felices de otros tiempos. Es un consuelo estar con los niños y abrazarlos; el solo verlos juntos, gozándose. Siempre preciamos la creación hecha por amor.
Sin embargo, regresar a casa es traumático, me pega duro entender que regreso al mismo dolor, donde cada vez que vuelvo a ver estoy rodeada de pensamientos, de un pasado tan cercano. Muy pocas veces es una bendición que me lleva a sonreír, la mayor parte de las veces llegan llenos de congoja y preguntas sin respuesta como: ¿Por qué?, ¿por qué? ¡Es increíble lo que el cuerpo aguanta! Y me examino de nuevo.
Un año ha pasado… Mi mente me transporta a hace treinta años. Una separación nunca anticipada, mucho menos comprender el tema real al que me enfrentaría, la regresión narcótica en la que me envolvía en el cuidado de otros y la gravedad y entendimiento de la ocasión. Ni podría conocer la ausencia sin final que viene después: el vacío, el verdadero opuesto al significado, mi desaparecida conexión, mis pensamientos e ideas sin un blanco y que lloraría por mí misma, como era, como no soy más, como seré, con el resto de una vida sin esperanza. Trato de reconstruir cada evento del último año esforzándome por cambiar el resultado final, sin éxito.
No quiero que este ano llegue a un final, vivo a través del calendario del ano pasado. ¿Qué hacía?, ¿a dónde iba?, ¿a quién veía? Después de mañana, estaré yo sola en mi pasado y, tendré que dejarlo ir. Un pasado que lentamente no será el centro de mis días, me parece una traición.
He subsistido un año, nueve meses y 26 días….Estoy soñando con una luz que me sonríe. Un ángel que me rescata, suspira y llora. Parece que uno de los niños ha tenido su propio niño. En el sueño vuelo, es imposible no seguir la luz y me encuentro estableciéndome en un lugar desconocido.
Allí estás de nuevo, animándome a enfocarme en la luz, convirtiéndote en el vigilante de la vida a través mío, alguien que cree que el sol sale de nuevo pero que no teme mi oscuridad. There was a banquet at the house of the Athenian poet Agathon. This man had won the first prize for his drama at the Greek Theater, and he invited his best friends to join him in the celebration of his victory. The guests were discussing one of their favorite subjects, love. Each one, in turn, was trying to explain his own idea as to the meaning of this all absorbing topic young people into heroes.
“Love”, said Phaedrus “is the oldest of the gods, and one of the most powerful. It is that principle which turns ordinary young people into heroes. For the lover is ashamed to act as a coward in the presence of his beloved. Give me an army made up of lovers, and I can conquer the world”.
“Yes”, agreed the next speaker, Pausians, “but you must distinguish between earthly love and heavenly love, the attraction between two bodies on the one hand, and the affinity between two souls on the other. The vulgar love of the bod takes wings and flies away when the bloom of youth is over. But the noble love of the soul is perpetual”. And then, came the comic poet Aristophanes with a brand-new theory about love. “In the olden days”, he told us, “the two sexes were united into one body. This body was round like a ball, with four hands, four feet and two faces. It moved about with amazing rapidity, using its eight limbs like the spokes of a wheel in a continual series of somersaults. Terrible was the strength of this race of men-women, and boundless was their ambition”.
They were planning to scale the heavens and to attack the gods when Zeus hit upon a happy plan. “Let us cut them in two”, he said, “and then they will have only half their strength and we shall have twice as many sacrifices.”
“And so he split them apart into male and female, and from that day onward the two halves of the once-united body have been consumed with a longing to be reunited into one. And this longing for the reunion of the sexes is what we call love.”
This humorous interpretation of love was followed by several other interesting definitions until finally the guest of honor, Socrates, was requested to make a few remarks on the subject.
“After all this eloquence”, began Socrates, “I am turned into stone and struck dumb. For how can my foolishness compete with such wisdom?
And, having unburdened himself of this Socratic preface of ironic modesty, he proceeded to confuse all their ‘wisdom’ with his ‘foolishness’. He tore down their arguments with a series of unanswerable questions. Socrates was the founder of the quiz method in education and then he followed this destructive process with a constructive theory of his own. “Love,” he observed, “is the hunger of the human soul for divine beauty”.
“The lover is eager not only to find beauty but to create it, to perpetuate it, to plant the seed of immortality in the mortal body.” This is why the sexes love each other: to reproduce themselves and thus prolong time into eternity. And this is why parents love their children. For the soul of the loving parents creates no merely children but seekers and partners and co-workers and successors in the eternal quest for beauty.”
“And what is this beauty that we are all seeking to perpetuate through love? It is wisdom and virtue and honor and courage and justice and faith. In a single word, beauty is Truth. And Truth is the way that leads directly to God.”
The guests applauded the speech of the barefoot Philosopher and then they proceeded to the more prosaic business of the evening. They entered into a drinking contest which lasted all through the night. One by one the revelers dropped out of the contest until at cockcrow there were only three left: Aristophanes, Agathon and Socrates. They were drinking out of a large goblet which they passed around, and Socrates was explaining to the two poets, who were half asleep, that the great writer of Comedy should also be a great writer of Tragedy. And first Aristophanes fell asleep; and then, as the day was dawning Agathon. Socrates laid them gently to rest, took a final drink in honor of the wine God, Dyonysius and went off to his daily business of spreading wisdom among the citizens of Athens.
One of the guests at his famous banquet was a disciple of Socrates, a young man who was later to immortalize the mental process and physical endurance of his master. The name of this young man was Plato.

-Si –acordó el siguiente orador, Pausanias-, pero debéis hacer distinción entre el amor carnal y el amor espiritual; la atracción entre dos cuerpos, por un lado, y la afinidad entre dos almas por el otro. El amor vulgar del cuerpo se extiende y se aleja cuando la lozanía de la juventud se acaba. Pero el amor espiritual del alma es perpetuo.
Después, vino el poeta cómico Aristófanes con una teoría nueva sobre el amor. –En los viejos tiempo –nos dijo-, los dos sexos estaban unidos en un solo cuerpo, era redondo como una esfera, con cuatro manos, cuatro pies y dos caras. Se desplazaba con increíble rapidez, usando sus ocho extremidades como rayos de rueda, en una continua serie de volteretas. A esta interpretación humorística del amor le siguieron otras definiciones interesantes hasta que finalmente le pidieron a Sócrates, el invitado de honor, hacer comentarios sobre el tema.
-Después de esta elocuencia –empezó Sócrates-, estoy pasmado y quedo mudo. ¿Cómo puede mi ignorancia competir con tal sabiduría?
Y, habiendo descargado este prólogo Socrático de modesta ironía, procedió a confundir toda la “sabiduría” de aquellos con su “ignorancia”. Derribó sus argumentos con una serie de cuestiones sin respuesta. Sócrates fue el fundador de este método interrogativo de educación y siguió con el proceso destructivo con una teoría propia, pero constructiva. –El amor, -comentó-, es el hambre del alma humana por la belleza divina.
-El amante no está solamente ávido por encontrar la belleza, pero de crearla, de prolongarla, de plantar la semilla de la inmortalidad en el cuerpo. Los invitados aplaudieron el discurso del Filósofo descalzo y prosiguiendo con actividades más prosaicas de la noche. Se organizaron en una competencia de tragos que duró toda la noche. Uno por uno los vividores fueron saliendo del concurso hasta que al alba solo quedaron tres. Aristófanes, Agatón y Sócrates. Tomaban de una gran copa que se pasaban entre si y Sócrates explicaba a los dos poetas quienes estaban casi dormidos, que un gran escritor de Comedia debería serlo también de Tragedia. Aristófanes fue el primero en dormirse; y luego conforme amanecía, Agatón. Sócrates los recostó con gentileza a descansar, tomó su último trago en honor a Dioniso, el Dios del vino, y partió hacia su rutina cotidiana de difundir sabiduría a los ciudadanos de Atenas.

-“Call in the experts!”…
…that is how most marketing managers respond when they have to come up with a bottle, box, can or jar to hold a new product. The experts include artists, packing designers, engineers and production people, market research and advertising specialists and executives from the sales and legal departments.
And no wonder in today’s highly competitive marketplace, package design can often make or break a product. Make a wrong decision, for example, and your product will fail to catch the shopper’s eye. It will get lost on the crowded supermarket shelf while your company loses sales to the competition.
That is why it is so surprising that one of the most successful product packages of all times was designed by mistake. The product is Coca-Cola, and the package is the world-famous Coca-Cola bottle.
Coke has been bottled since 1891, but originally the bottles were quite ordinary. In fact, for years there was no single style of coke bottle at all. Some were white, some brown, and some had arrow designs molded into their sides. But there was some similarity. All had diamond-shaped paper labels that quickly came off when moisture from the air collected on the cold bottles.
Although it was simpler a world back then, company officials recognized the marketing advantages of a single uniform bottle for their product. So they decided to hold a contest among their various bottle suppliers. The prize for the winning design was to be the exclusive contract to manufacture the bottle for The Coca-Cola Company.
One of the bottle manufacturers involved was the Root Glass Company in Indiana Alex Samuelson, the plant superintendent at Root Glass, was sure he could win if he could create a design that had something to do with the two main ingredients in Coke: the cola nut and coca leaf.
Samuelson had no idea what these ingredients looked like, so he sent a friend to the library to get some pictures. By mistake the friend brought back a picture not of a coca leaf, but of a cocoa pod. The two have similar sounding names, but are really quite different. The cocoa pod holds the seeds used in making chocolate and has nothing to do with the coca leaf used in making Coca-Cola. But no matter, Samuelson didn’t notice the mistake. He designed a bottle to resemble the pod, he had several made, and won the contest for his company. The Coca-Cola Company changed the design only slightly: it molded its name into the bottle, thus solving the paper label problem.
The newly designed bottles went into production in 1916, and have been manufactured ever since. The company didn’t seem to mind that its bottle was modeled after a chocolate tree pod. In fact, it liked the design so much that it registered it as a trademark in more than 100 countries. As a result, the Coca-Cola soft drink bottle has never been successfully imitated by competing companies.
The same thing could probably never happen today. Still, it’s nice to know that sometimes great packaging designs are created by average people – even by mistake – without experts, without specialist, and without consultants of any kind.

Y no es de sorprender. En el mercado tan competido de la actualidad, el diseño del envase, a menudo puede representar el éxito de un producto o su fracaso. Una mala decisión, por ejemplo, y un producto fracasará en atraer la atención del consumidor. Se perderá en los abarrotados estantes del supermercado, mientras la empresa pierde ventas frente a la competencia.

On reaching the age of eighty it is reasonable to suppose that the bulk of one’s work is done and that what remains to be done will be of less importance. The serious part of my life ever since boyhood has been devoted to two different objects which for a long time remained separate and have only in recent years united into a single whole. I wanted, on the one hand, to find out whether anything could be known and, on the other hand, to do whatever might be possible towards creating a happier world. Up to the age of thirty-eight I gave most of my energies to the first of these tasks. I was troubled by skepticism and was unwillingly forced to the conclusion that most of what passes for knowledge is open to reasonable doubt. I wanted certainty in the kind of way in which people want religious faith; I thought that certainty is more likely to be found in mathematics than elsewhere. But I discovered that many mathematical demonstrations, which my teachers exhorted me to accept, were full of fallacies, and that, if certainty were indeed discoverable in mathematics, it would be in a new kind of mathematics, with more solid foundations than those that had hitherto been thought secure. But as the work proceeded, I was continually reminded of the fable about the elephant and the tortoise. Having constructed an elephant upon which the mathematical world could rest, I found the elephant tottering, and proceeded to construct a tortoise to keep the elephant from falling. But the tortoise was no more secure than the elephant, and after some twenty years of very arduous toil, I came to the conclusion that there was nothing more that I could do in the way of making mathematical knowledge indubitable. Then came the First World War, and my thoughts became concentrated on human misery and folly. Neither misery nor folly seem to me a part of the inevitable lot of man. And I am convinced that intelligence, patience, and eloquence can sooner or later lead the human race out of its self-imposed tortures provided it does not exterminate itself meanwhile.
On the basis of this belief, I have always had a certain degree of optimism, although, as I have grown older, the optimism has grown more sober and the happy issue more distant. But I remain completely incapable of agreeing with those who accept fatalistically the view that man is born to trouble. The causes of unhappiness in the past and in the present are not difficult to ascertain. There have been poverty, pestilence and famine, which were due to man’s inadequate mastery of nature. There have been war, oppression and tortures which have been due to men’s hostility to their fellowmen.

Cuando se llega a la edad de 80, es razonable suponer que la mayor porción de nuestro trabajo ya esta hecho y lo que resta por hacer es de menor importancia. La parte más seria de mi vida desde mi niñez, la he dedicado a 2 objetivos diferentes que por mucho tiempo se mantuvieron separados y solo en años recientes se han reunido en uno solo. Por un lado, quería determinar si algo podría saberse sin lugar a dudas y por el otro lado, hacer todo lo que fuera posible para crear un mundo más feliz. Hasta los 38 años entregué una buena parte de mi energía por lograr la primera de estas tareas. Me invadía el escepticismo y me vi forzado a admitir que la mayor parte de lo que se considera como conocimiento esta abierta a dudas razonables. Yo necesitaba certeza de la manera que gente busca la fe religiosa. Pensé que la certeza era más fácil encontrarla en matemáticas que en cualquier otra disciplina. Pero descubrí que muchas de las demostraciones matemáticas que mis profesores me exhortaban a aceptar, estaban llenas de paralogismos y que, si la certeza pudiera descubrirse en las matemáticas, sería en una nueva forma de ellas, con cimientos mas sólidos que con los que hasta ahora se habían considerado seguros. Mientras el trabajo proseguía, continuamente recordaba la fábula del elefante y la tortuga. Construí un elefante donde el mundo de las matemáticas se pudiese apoyar. Encontré que el elefante se tambaleaba y procedí a construir una tortuga para prevenir su caída. Sin embargo, la tortuga no era más firme que el elefante y después de unos 20 años de trabajo arduo, concluí que no había más que yo pudiera hacer para que el conocimiento matemático fuera irrefutable. Estalló la Primera Guerra Mundial y mis pensamientos se enfocaron en la miseria y en la insensatez humana. Ninguna de ellas me parece parte inevitable al destino del hombre. Y estoy convencido de que la inteligencia, paciencia y la elocuencia finalmente liberan a la raza humana de las torturas que se ha impuesto, siempre y cuando no se extermine en el proceso.
Con base en esta creencia, siempre he tenido algún grado de optimismo, aunque, mientras he envejecido el optimismo se ha vuelto mas moderado y el tema de la felicidad más distante. Pero no estoy de acuerdo con los que aceptan la visión fatalista que el hombre nació para sufrir. Las causas de la infelicidad en el pasado y en el presente no son difíciles de determinar. Ha habido pobreza, peste y hambruna, que fueron resultado del abuso de la naturaleza por parte del hombre. Hay guerras, opresión y torturas que son resultado de la hostilidad del hombre hacia sus semejantes.

En un discurso en el que habló acerca de Ia• consolidación de Ia democracia a partir de Ia primera
década de este siglo, destacó que todos debemos cuidar las instituciones que hemos construido.
viendo siempre por el interés de Ia Nación antes que por el de las personas, de los sectores o de
los partidos, y éstos, dijo, son principios a los que he procurado ceñir mi conducta durante estos seis anos.
En el primer trimestre del año, el producto interno bruto se incremento 1.9°/o, crecimiento muy inferior al mostrado en los primeros tres meses del 2000 de 7. 7°/o. El sector industrial fue el mas afectado, cayó 1.3°/o, en él se concentran casi el 90°/o de las exportaciones que se destinan a la economía estadounidense. El sector agropecuario, que representa el 5.2°/o de Ia producción, se desplomó en 5.5°/o. Sin embargo, ante Ia evolución aun positiva del ingreso personal disponible, el sector servicios creció en 3.9°/o.
Las exportaciones crecieron solo 4 6°/o, mientras que las importaciones lo hicieron 6.9°/o, ocasionando que el déficit comercial ascendiera a 2 mil 123 millones de dólares, nivel 84 9°/o superior al registrado en el mismo periodo del año pasado.
La desaceleración económica afectó también los ingresos públicos. No obstante que nuestras finanzas publicas registraron un superávit de 13 mil 322 millones de pesos en el primer trimestre de este año, este fue inferior en 6.3°/o al registrado en el mismo periodo del 2000, y resultó menor al presupuestado por un monto de 3 mil 375 millones de pesos.
Ante estos resultados, el gobierno federal presentó el 11 de mayo pasado El Programa para Fortalecer Ia Economía, dirigido a elevar Ia competitividad de nuestro aparato productivo y a fortalecer las finanzas publicas y Ia productividad gubernamental.
Este programa contiene medidas de:
1. Promoción de Ia competitividad del aparato productivo mediante:
• Mejoramiento del marco regulatorio y promoción de Ia modernización tecnológica.
• Ejecución oportuna de los proyectos de infraestructura.
• Promoción de esquemas de apoyo a Ia construcción de vivienda.
• Mejorar los productos y los canales de financiamiento.
2. Fortalecimiento de las finanzas públicas y aumento de Ia productividad gubernamental.
• Adecuación del gasto publico por los 3 mil 375 millones de pesos.
Estas medidas pretenden:
• Mantener los equilibrios fundamentales de Ia economía en niveles manejables, las finanzas publicas y las cuentas con el exterior.
Lo anterior se va a lograr mediante Ia alineación de Ia demanda interna al ritmo de
crecimiento económico, para disminuir las presiones sobre Ia balanza de pagos y
mantener el déficit fiscal de acuerdo al presupuesto.

Democracy in Mexico is decision and determination of many generations

“Democracy is not the result of a sole person, a group, a party (ies), not even a generation’s actions, it is the result of many generations’ effort; of the firm decision and firm determination of the Mexican people to build a democratic political system that may not be reversed”, declared President Ernesto Zedillo during the Democracy Council, where he received books from The Complete Works of Francisco I. Madero.
During the speech where he spoke about democracy’s consolidation that started during the first decade of this century, he emphasized that everyone must care for the institutions created; for the benefit of the nation, before than those of the people, sectors or parties –and these, -he said-, are the principles that I have adhered to during these six years.
In the first quarter of the year the gross domestic product increased 1.9%, a much inferior growth to the 7.7% shown on the first quarter of the year 2000. Industry, the most affected, and which concentrates almost 90% of exports destined for the United States, dropped 1.3%. The agriculture sector, which represents 5.2% of production, plummeted to 5.5%. However, considering the still positive change in personal income availability, the service sector increased 3.9%.
Exports rose only 4.6% while imports reached a 6.9%, resulting in an increase of 2.123 billion dollars, 84.9% higher than the one registered the same period last year.
The economic situation’s slow down affected public income as well. However, our public finances registered a surplus of 13.322 billion pesos in this year’s first quarter, 6.3% lower than what was registered in the year 2000 during the same period, which was lower than budgeted for 3.375 billion pesos.
Facing these results, the Federal Government presented last May 11th, the Program to Reinforce the Economy, aimed to increase competitiveness within the productive sector and to strengthen our public finances and government productivity.
The Program’s measures include:
1. Encourage competitiveness within the productive sector:
• Improve regulations and promote modern technology.
• Timely execution of infrastructure projects.
• Foster residential building support plans.
• Improve financing services and products.
2. Reinforce public finance and increase government productivity:
• Adjust to budget of 3,375 billion pesos
Expectations of these measures:
• To keep public finances and foreign accounts well balanced and manageable through the alignment of internal demand and economic growth, in order to reduce payment pressure and maintain fiscal deficit according to the budget.

1. INTRODUCCION
Síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida (SIDA), conjunto de manifestaciones clínicas que aparecen como consecuencia de la depresión del sistema inmunológico debido a la infección por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH). Una persona infectada con el VIH va perdiendo, de forma progresiva, la función de ciertas células de sistema inmune llamadas linfocitos T CD4, lo que la hace susceptible a diversas infecciones como neumonías o micosis. En algunos casos, estas infecciones oportunistas (infecciones por microrganismos que normalmente no causan enfermedad en personas sanas pero sí lo hacen en aquellas que han perdido, en parte, la función del sistema inmune) pueden llegar a provocar la muerte o el desarrollo en el paciente de diversos tipos de cáncer.
Al principio de la década de 1980 se detectaron diversos fallecimientos debidos a infecciones oportunistas que también en pacientes transplantados que recibían una terapia inmunosupresora para evitar el rechazo al órgano transplantado.
Al parecer, un gran número de estos fallecimientos se producían en varones homosexuales. En 1983, un especialista francés en cáncer, Luc Montagnier, del Instituto Pasteur de París, consiguió aislar un nuevo retrovirus humano en un nódulo linfático de un hombre que padecía un síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida. Por esas mismas fechas, científicos estadounidenses consiguieron también aislar un retrovirus en enfermos de SIDA, así como en personas que habían mantenido relaciones con pacientes con SIDA. Este virus, conocido como VIH en la actualidad, resultó ser el agente causante del SIDA.
Es importante considerar que el contraer una infección por VIH no implica necesariamente que la persona vaya a desarrollar el síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida, aunque a aquellos pacientes a los que se les detecta la infección por VIH se les considera, erróneamente, como enfermos de SIDA. De hecho, se tiene constancia de que algunas personas han sufrido una infección por VIH durante más de diez años sin que, durante este tiempo, hayan desarrollado ninguna de las manifestaciones clínicas que definen el diagnóstico de SIDA. En 1997 se estimó que mas de 30 millones de personas en el mundo estaban infectadas por el virus VIH o padecían SIDA (29,5 millones de adultos y 1,1 millones de niños). La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) estima que desde 1981, cuando los primeros casos de SIDA fueron detectados, hasta finales de 1998, más de 12,9 millones de adultos y niños han desarrollado las manifestaciones que definen el SIDA. En este mismo período se han producido 11,7 millones de fallecimientos por esta causa. España es el país europeo con mayor incidencia de la enfermedad y ocupa el segundo lugar (después de Estados Unidos) en número de casos dentro del mundo occidental
SISTEMA INMUNOLÓGICO
1. INTRODUCCIÓN
Sistema inmunológico, también llamado sistema inmune, es el sistema corporal cuya función primordial consiste en destruir los agentes patógenos que encuentra. Cualquier agente considerado extraño por un sistema inmunológico se denomina antígeno. La responsabilidad del sistema inmunológico es enorme y debe presentar una gran diversidad, con objeto de reaccionar de forma adecuada con los miles de antígenos, patógenos potenciales diferentes, que pueden invadir el cuerpo. Aún no se conocen en su totalidad los mecanismos fisiológicos complejos implicados en el sistema inmunológico, pero la investigación médica continúa desentrañándolos.
2. COMPONENTES
El sistema inmunológico consta de seis componentes principales, tres de los cuales son diferentes tipos de células, y los otros tres, proteínas solubles Estos seis componentes pueden encontrarse en la sangre de diferentes formas.
2.1 Células
Las tres categorías de células inmunológicas son granulocitos, monocitos/macrófagos y linfocitos. Los granulocitos son las células con núcleo más abundantes en la sangre. Estas células fagocitan (ingieren) los antígenos que penetran en el cuerpo, sobre todo si estos antígenos han sido recubiertos en la sangre por inmunoglobulinas o por proteínas del sistema del complemento (descrito más adelante bajo el epígrafe proteínas). Una vez ingeridos, los antígenos suelen ser destruidos por las potentes enzimas de los granulocitos.
Los monocitos constituyen un pequeño porcentaje de la totalidad de las células sanguíneas; cuando se encuentran localizados en los tejidos, fuera de la circulación sanguínea, experimentan cambios físicos y morfológicos, y reciben el nombre de macrófagos. Al igual que los granulocitos, los monocitos también ingieren sustancias extrañas, interaccionan con las inmunoglobulinas y con las proteínas del complemento, y contiene enzimas potentes dentro de su citoplasma. Sin embargo, los monocitos alteran además los antígenos, haciendo que la respuesta inmune del tercer tipo de células inmunológicas, los linfocitos, sea más fácil y más eficaz.
En algunos aspectos los linfocitos son las células más importantes del sistema inmunológico. Existen dos tipos principales de linfocitos: los linfocitos B y los linfocitos T. Los primeros son responsables de la inmunidad humoral o serológica; es decir, los linfocitos B y sus descendientes directos, que reciben el nombre de células plasmáticas, son las células responsables de la producción de unos componentes del suero de la sangre, denominados inmunoglobulinas (véase mas adelante). Los linfocitos T son responsables de la inmunidad celular; es decir, atacan y destruyen directamente a los antígenos. Estas células también amplifican o suprimen la respuesta inmunológica global, regulando a los otros componentes del sistema inmunológico y segregan gran variedad de citoquinas (véase más adelante). Los linfocitos T constituyen el 70% de todos los linfocitos. Tanto los linfocitos T como los linfocitos B tienen la capacidad de recordar, desde el punto de vista bioquímico, una exposición previa a un antígeno específico, de manera que si la exposición es repetida puede producirse una destrucción más eficaz del antígeno.
2.2 Proteínas
Los tres tipos de proteínas que forman parte del sistema inmunológico, y se encuentran disueltas en el suero (la porción líquida de la sangre), son las inmunoglobulinas, las citoquinas y las proteínas del complemento. Hay miles de clases diferentes de inmunoglobulinas, que reciben el nombre de anticuerpos; cada una de ellas se combina de manera exacta con un tipo específico de antígeno y contribuye a su eliminación. Esta inmensa diversidad es la característica principal del sistema inmunológico en conjunto. Las citoquinas son compuestos solubles, responsables en gran parte de la regulación de la respuesta inmunológica Si son segregadas por los linfocitos, reciben el nombre de linfoquinas; si son segregadas por los monocitos, se denominan monoquinas. Algunas citoquinas amplifican o incrementan una respuesta inmunológica que está en curso, otras hacen que las células proliferen, y otras pueden suprimir una respuesta inmunológica en funcionamiento. El sistema inmunológico, al igual que otros sistemas corporales, debe ser regulado de esta forma, de modo que el sistema esté activo cuando sea necesario, pero no lo esté de manera patológica.
Las proteínas del complemento forman una familia de compuestos que, junto con las inmunoglobulinas, actúan para propiciar una respuesta inmunológica adecuada. Una vez que un anticuerpo se une específicamente a su antígeno, las proteínas del complemento pueden unirse a complejo formado de esta forma, y facilitan que las células inmunológicas lleven a cabo la fagocitosis.
3. LA RESPUESTA INMUNOLÓGICA
Los seis componentes del sistema inmunológico actúan como un todo para desarrollar una respuesta inmunitaria eficaz. La investigación ha conseguido demostrar cómo suceden muchas de las etapas de este proceso; otras fases aún son especulativas y están siendo investigadas. Sin embargo, el proceso básico es el siguiente: cuando un antígeno patógeno, por ejemplo una bacteria, consigue superar la primera línea de defensa del cuerpo, por ejemplo la piel, se encuentra en primer lugar con los granulocitos y los monocitos, y es neutralizado en parte por anticuerpos prexistentes y los las proteínas del complemento. Después, los linfocitos y los macrófagos interaccionan en el lugar donde ha entrado la bacteria, amplificando la respuesta inmunológica; se sintetizan anticuerpos más específicos eficaces, debido a la memoria inmunológica generada por la bacteria invasora. En los ganglios linfáticos (véase Sistema linfático) más próximos puede tener lugar una amplificación similar de la respuesta inmunológica, así como en lugares más distantes, tales como el bazo y la médula ósea, donde también se sintetizan linfocitos.
Si todo funciona, el sistema inmunológico supera a la bacteria, de manera que la enfermedad esta ya bajo control. En este momento se ponen en funcionamiento mecanismos autorreguladores supresores que detienen la respuesta inmunológica; las citoquinas tienen gran importancia en este proceso supresor. Si el sistema inmunológico no está autorregulado de una manera adecuada, se pueden originar otras enfermedades de naturaleza inmunopatológica. Una vez que el antígeno es destruido mediante esta combinación de acciones, el sistema inmunológico esta preparado para responder de una manera más eficaz si el mismo tipo de microrganismo invadiera de nuevo el cuerpo. Si dicha preparación es adecuada para neutralizar a una bacteria específica antes de que ésta produzca la enfermedad, se dice entonces que existe inmunidad frente a dicha bacteria.
4. ENFERMEDADES INMUNOLÓGICAS E INMUNODEFICIENCIAS
Ciertas enfermedades de importancia clínica están relacionadas con deficiencias del sistema inmunológico, y otras están relacionadas con un funcionamiento anormal (pero por lo demás no deficiente) de dicho sistema. La disfunción o la deficiencia del sistema puede ser un fenómeno primario; esto es, congénito o adquirido; o puede tratarse de un fenómeno secundario, que aparece como consecuencia de otras enfermedades, tales como el cáncer. La inmunosupresión también puede aparecer como resultado del tratamiento administrado para otras enfermedades, incluido al cáncer.
Por lo general, las inmunodeficiencias primarias son congénitas y varían desde anormalidades benignas hasta deficiencias severas incompatibles con la vida. La disfunción de los linfocitos B y la ausencia de anticuerpos son problemas relativamente comunes, que afectan a una de cada 500 personas, y suelen estar relacionados con la aparición de infecciones recurrentes (sobre todo producidas por bacterias). Con frecuencia, este tipo de problema puede tratarse con la administración de inyecciones mensuales de gammaglobulina, la cual contiene muchos anticuerpos protectores. En los últimos años, la inmunodeficiencia que ha atraído mayor atención por pare del público ha sido el síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida (SIDA).
Las inmunodeficiencias secundarias pueden ser inducidas por drogas tóxicas (como las que se utilizan en el tratamiento del cáncer) o por malnutrición, o ser secundarias a otras enfermedades (por ejemplo, cáncer). Pueden ser benignas o graves, o tratarlas consiste en mitigar el problema primario que las origina.
Muchas enfermedades que suelen clasificarse como enfermedades autoinmunes, se deben a una autorregulación defectuosa de la respuesta inmunológica normal. El sistema defectuoso puede destruir o dañar células y sustancias solubles normales, lo cual conduce a la aparición de una enfermedad evidente desde el punto de vista clínico. Una alergia es una reacción anormal a una sustancia con la que se ha tenido contacto previo, y que suele ser inofensiva para otros individuos.
Translation - English ACQUIRED IMMUNE DEFICIENCY SYNDROME
1. INTRODUCTION
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), a collection of clinical evidence that appear as a consequence of the depressed immune system due to an infection by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). A person infected by HIV, gradually loses the function of certain immune system cells called TCD4 lymphocytes, thus causing susceptibility to diverse infections like pneumonia and mycosis. In some cases, these timely infections (infections by microorganisms that normally do not cause an illness to healthy people, but do on those that have lost part of the immune system’s function) may be a cause of death or the development of different types of cancer in a patient.
At the beginning of 1980, several deaths were detected as consequence of opportunist infections that had also been seen in patients with transplants that were on immunosuppressant therapy to prevent rejection of the new organ.
It appears that a great number of these deaths occurred in homosexual males. In 1983 a french cancer specialist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, Luc Montagnier, isolated a new human retrovirus in a male’s lymph node suffering from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Around the same time, American scientists also isolated a retrovirus in patients with AIDS, as well as in people that kept sexual relations with patients with AIDS. This virus currently known as HIV, was cause of AIDS.
It does not necessarily imply that a person infected by HIV will develop AIDS, although, those detected with HIV are mistakenly considered AIDS patients. As a matter of fact, there is evidence of people infected by HIV for more than ten years without having developed the clinical evidence that defines AIDS diagnosis. In 1997 it was estimated that 30 million people worldwide were infected by HIV or suffered from AIDS (29,5 million adults and 1,1 million children). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that since 1981, when the first AIDS cases were detected, until the end of 1998, more than 12,9 million adults and children had developed the clinical symptoms that define AIDS. The same period of time registered 11,7 million deaths. Within the Western World, Spain is the European country with greater incidence in number of cases, occupying second place after the United States .
THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
1. INTRODUCTION
The immune system, also known as the immunological system is the body system whose primary function is to destroy all pathogenic agents it finds. Any agent considered alien by the immune system is called antigen. Its responsibility is wide and it must be highly diversified in order to react adequately towards thousands of antigens, varied potential pathogens, that may invade the body. The complex physiologic mechanisms included in the immune system are not fully known yet, but medical research continues.
2. COMPONENTS
The immune system includes six primary components, three of which are different types of cells and the other three are soluble proteins. These six components may be found in the blood in different forms.
2.1 Cells
The three categories of immune cells are granulocytes, monocytes/macrophages and lymphocytes. Granulocytes are the most abundant nucleus cells in the blood. These cells ingest the antigens that penetrate the body, specially is these have been coated in the blood by antibodies or by the complement system proteins (described ahead under the protein epigraph). Once ingested, antigens are usually destroyed by granulocytes’ powerful enzymes.
Monocytes are a small percentage of the total blood cells; when they are found in tissue, outside the bloodstream, they go through physical and morphological changes and receive the name of macrophages. Just like granulocytes, monocytes also ingest alien substances, interact with antibodies and proteins from the complement system. They contain powerful enzymes inside its cytoplasm. Yet, monocytes alter antigens as well, creating an easy and efficient immune response from the lymphocytes.
In some aspects lymphocytes are the most important cells in the Immune System. There are two primary types of lymphocytes: lymphocytes B and lymphocytes T. The former are responsible for the humoral immunity response. Lymphocytes B and its direct descendants called plasma cells, are responsible for some components of blood serum production, called antibodies (see below). Lymphocytes T are accounted for cell immunity; attack and destroy antigens directly. These amplify or suppress global immunity response, while regulating other components of the Immune System, in turn secreting a great variety of cytokines (see below). Lymphocytes T represent 70% of all lymphocytes. Lymphocytes T as well as Lymphocytes B have memory ability; repeated exposures to specific antigens produce a more efficient destruction of those antigens.
2.2 Proteins
The three types of proteins in the Immune system are dissolved in the blood serum: antibodies, cytokines and proteins from the complement system. There are many different antibodies, each one is perfectly combined to an antigen thus contributing to its elimination. This immense diversity is the primary property of the Immune System. Cytokines are solvent compounds accounted to regulate immunologic response. If secreted by lymphocytes they are called lymphokines. If secreted by monocytes they are called monokines. Some cytokines may increase, proliferate cells or suppress an immune response in progress. The Immune system as well as other body systems must be regulated in this manner in order to keep active when necessary, yet, not in a pathological manner.
Proteins from the complement system are compounds that along with antibodies provide an adequate immune response. Once an antibody specifically joins an antigen, proteins from the complement system may bond to the structure, thus providing phagocytosis in immune cells.
3. THE IMMUNE RESPONSE
The six components of the immune system act as a whole to develop and efficient immune response. The many stages of this process and how they take place has been demonstrated through investigations; other phases are still speculation and being researched. Nonetheless, the basic process is as follows: when a pathogenic antigen, a bacteria, goes beyond the first defense line, for example the skin, it converges with granulocytes and monocytes and is neutralized in part by preexisting antibodies and complement system proteins. Afterwards, lymphocytes and macrophages interact where bacteria entered, amplifying an immune response. Specific and efficient antibodies are condensed, due to the immune memory generated by the invasive bacteria. Close by lymph nodes (see Lymphatic System) may result in an increased immune response as well as distant places such as spleen and bone marrow where lymphocytes also condensed.
If all goes well, the immune system destroys the bacteria, thus the illness is under control. At this moment suppressing auto-regulating mechanisms go into gear stopping the immune response; cytokines have great importance in this suppressing process. Immunodeficient illnesses in nature can occur if the system is not adequately auto-regulated. One the antigen is destroyed through these actions, the Immune System is ready to respond more efficiently on another given invasion of the same microorganism. There is immunity in face of such a bacteria, only and if the foundation to neutralize it is suitable before it produces an illness.
4. IMMUNOLOGICAL ILLNESS AND IMMUNODEFICIENCY
Some important clinical illnesses are related to deficiencies in the Immune System and others are related to an abnormal functionality (yet not deficient) of the system. Deficiency of the system could by a primary phenomenon, that is, congenital or acquired; or it can be a secondary phenomenon as consequence of other illnesses such as cancer. Immunosuppression may also appear as a result of treatment administered for other illnesses including cancer.
In general, primary immunodeficiency is congenital and vary from benign abnormalities to severe deficiencies incompatible with life. Lymphocyte B dysfunction and the absence of antibodies are relatively common problems that affect one in 500 people, and are often related to recurrent infections (above all, those produced by bacteria) This problem can be frequently treated with monthly gamma globulin inoculations, which contain many protecting antibodies. A faulty function of Lymphocyte B in cell immunity is much less common than deficiencies related to antibodies; these are related mostly to infections produced by a virus or fungus, and are more difficult to treat. Severe primary immunodeficiency consists on a combination of deficient B and T cells, which is fatal in absence of radical treatment, such as bone marrow transplant. In recent years, AIDS has brought the most public attention among immunodeficiency related illnesses.
Secondary immunodeficiency can be induced by toxic drugs (as those used for cancer treatment) or by malnutrition, or be secondary to other illnesses (such as cancer). It may range from being benign to serious, or to illness related to lymphocytes B or T and, the best treatment is to mitigate the main cause.
Many illnesses classified as auto-immune are a result of a defective auto-regulation of a normal immunological response. A defective system may destroy or damage cells and normal soluble substances, which leads to the development of an obvious illness. An allergy is a normal reaction to coming in contact with a previous substance, that may be harmless to other people.
