New Mideast Crude Contract May Test OPEC’s Grip on
Oil
Summary:
 Unsurprisingly, both the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times (see
below) report on the launch of Abu Dhabi’s new Murban oil futures
contract on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).
 As the WSJ author notes, trade was “brisk” on the opening day of trading
with 6.3 million barrels of Murban-priced crude changing hands.
 Prices also rose, as did the pricing of Brent and West Texas Intermediate,
largely due to the news that the Suez Canal had been unblocked and trade
can flow once more.
 As the author also explains, Abu Dhabi’s goal is to attract refiners in
Asia, particularly as Western demand starts to contract under pressure to
reduce consumption of fossil fuels.
 The new Murban contract should enable Asian refiners to hedge directly
against price moves rather than relying on derivatives linked to Dubai
crude, as has previously been the practice.
 Moreover, by allowing prices for different dates to move on ICE, Abu
Dhabi is hoping that it will put the UAE’s Murban output on a stronger
footing to compete with US-produced shale oil.
ADNOC CEO, Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber, is also cited explaining that the new
contract will not affect the UAE’s capacity to conform with OPEC production
limits because Murban can be stored and delivered from its extensive reserve in
Fujairah.
