Finnish term

Ruska

Finnish to English Other Environment & Ecology Autumn/fall
Here's a topical term. This is a term I have translated in a number of different ways over the years. I would be more than interested to hear what you have used or would use!

Ruska also occurs in a number of English-speaking countries, but I have never heard an accurate translation.
Proposed translations (English)

Grzegorz Mizera Aug 14, 2017:
My (last) two cents At the moment I am on the opposite coast of Gulf of Finland (i.e. southern) and I do not have access to Etymologinen sanakirja, but I found an interesting statement (again Google, sorry): "Sana ruskea on alun perin tarkoittanut punaista, ja sanan vastineet eräissä sukukielissä merkitsevät edelleen punaista, kun taas sana punainen on alkujaan merkinnyt väriä ylipäänsä tai myös karvaa." showing similarity of ruska to Polish word rudy meaning redhead, also occuring in context of colours of autumn and leaves. Thus I would suggest a word along the lines of some shade of red.

A more poetic translation might serve your purpose: the russet hues of autumn?

Thanks. Although an accurate translation, this still does not do it justice. The period I am talking about is a brief high season for tourism in Lapland. The colours are very vibrant if compared to e.g. Central Europe.
Peer comment(s):

agree Anu Carroll : And "fall colors" in U.S. English. "The autumn colours of Lapland" does imply a spectacle of nature, not just leaves turning brown. Maybe you could say the autumn colours of "nature" or even "wilderness" if a place isn't specified.

Thanks. These are all pretty common translations, but none are accurate enough, as the difference between autumn in Central Europe and Lapland is huge.
I am not looking for Google answers, I can do that myself. I need you to think what the best translation could be.
