Portuguese term

luso-brasileiro e pêlo-duro ,

Non-PRO Portuguese to English Social Sciences Anthropology terminology -
Is there a formal translation for the above terms within the below historical context.
I suppose "pêlo-duro", could be translated to "hard or thick skinned".
I know these terms are or were used in reference to emmigrants' regional identities, especially in respect to the Italian-Guacho relationship.
Context as follows:

A categoria gaúcho será utilizada metonimicamente querendo englobar nela também o luso-brasileiro, o pêlo-duro , , indígena, o homem campeiro, entre outras diferenças presentes no mundo considerado “dos brasileiros”, da América e que foi sendo conhecido e reconhecido ao longo do processo colonizador

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Muriel Vasconcellos Dec 16, 2010:
Re: Kinky-haired I was not sure of the meaning in Portuguese. If it is not about miscegenation with blacks, then my answer is incorrect. If it IS about blacks, then 'kinky-haired' is the anthropological term.

Re: Luso-Brazilian In response to your question, I am not at all familiar with the term 'Portuguese-Brazilian'. I have always heard 'Luso-Brazilian'. It is used extensively in anthropology and linguistics.

refering to ethnic/ hair types it is COARSE-HAIRED http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=107
Marlene Curtis Dec 16, 2010:

Luso-Brazilian and kinky-haired

I assume this is similar to "cabelo ruim" - am I correct? If so, this is the expression in English. It's used in anthropology and ALSO in slang - an interesting combination.

Note from asker:
Thks yr research Muriel, yes this is an anthropological artical, and note yr comments re kinky hair (interesting!), in England we are probably more apt to use the term "fuzzt haired"as in Fuzzy Wuzzy (but that is a bit insulting/racist even.) What about the "Luso-Brazilian" may I translate that as Portuguse/Brazilian??
Peer comment(s):

disagree Marlene Curtis : No connection with black people here, but with Portuguese and Brazilian natives.

Thanks, Marlene. I wasn't sure about the meaning of the Portuguese. So this is not equivalent to "cabelo ruim"?

Luzo-Brazilian and hard-haired.

User:Ninguém is only an user who is since the beggining saying that "The overwhelming majority of Brazilian Whites are of Portuguese colonial descent" (his words). He already claimed to be of "colonial Portuguese descent" and even used a strange expression (pêlo-duro, something like "hard animal hair" because pêlo means animal hair and duro hard in Portuguese). I never heard about that "pêlo-duro" expression. It seems an internal expression used to describe people of colonial Portuguese ancestry.
