I had a very active network strategy when I started out some 35 years ago (at first in-person as it was before the Internet age and then online), but nowadays having a solid client base my approach to networking is rather passive. I enjoyed it for a while as I was a very social person but age changed me and I became more of an introvert…

When I started as a mere translator, I had to master some tricks and different CATs, diversifying to copywriting, rewriting, transcreating, new fields, and the rest. However, I was lucky to switch to interpreting soon, making many useful contacts and enhancing my biz skills.

While I still work as a translator sometimes, I'm glad that I don't have to participate in CAT-wars and spam greedy prospects, renegotiating "discounts" and begging for "a little better rates".

Real biz requires real people--and mutual trust. That's why there's big money for owners of virtual socialization means, but not for participants--even if there seem to be zillions of like-able "friends" and electronic "partners".

I really enjoy being with colleagues, which was one of the advantages of working in international organizations with large teams of translators. In the office setting, we supported one another in solving problems. Many of these relationships have led to lifelong friendships. I also enjoyed belonging to the American Translators Association. Like Teresa, I no longer spend much person-to-person time with colleagues.
