Typosquatting, also known as URL hijacking, is a form of cybersquatting (sitting on sites under someone else’s brand or copyright) that targets Internet users who incorrectly type a website address into their web browser (e.g., “Gooogle.com” instead of “Google.com”). When users make such a typographical error, they may be led to an alternative website owned by a hacker that is usually designed for malicious purposes.Hackers often create fake websites that imitate the look and feel of your intended destination so you may not realize you’re at a different site. Sometimes these sites exist to sell products and services that are in direct competition with those sold at the website you had intended to visit, but most often they are intended to steal your personal identifiable information, including credit cards or passwords.

Il termine typosquatting viene utilizzato per individuare l’attività di accaparramento di nomi a dominio che differiscono da quelli di aziende famose, per uno o più caratteri (ad es.: armmani.com). Tale attività tende a sfruttare eventuali errori di battitura da parte degli utenti, realizzando dei siti graficamente simili a quelli originali. Dal punto di vista pratico si potrebbe parlare di un vero e proprio sviamento della clientela.

Il typosquatter può seguire due strade. Può digitare l'URL di un dominio con grande volume di traffico, come può essere facebook.com e ottenere la lista degli altri domini di primo livello con lo stesso nome (ad esempio facebook.org, facebook.it, facebook.co.uk, ecc.) procedendo quindi a registrare quelli ancora liberi. L'altra strada, invece, è verificare la disponibilità di domini simili a quello individuato ma contenenti refusi (dacebook.com, vacebook.com, racebook.com, facebok.com, ecc.) procedendo poi a registrarli. In entrambi i casi si parla di typosquatting, ma le strategie perseguite sono differenti. Il risultato, invece, è lo stesso: nel giro di poche ore è possibile registrare centinaia di nuovi domini con nomi simili a quelli legittimi in grado di trasformarsi in altrettante pericolose trappole per internauti ignari.
