I don't translate into Italian, but do have to communicate with my Italian clients. I thought of using this expression in an e-mail but failed to find any suggestions amongst my numerous resources.

fanne tesoro
If you say something like "OK, maybe what happened was bad to you, but PUT IT DOWN TO EXPERIENCE", in Italian you would say "OK, forse quello che è successo è stato spiacevole, ma FANNE TESORO"
The meaning is PUT IT DOWN (this bad thing) and transform it in EXPERIENCE (a treasure, a "tesoro")

attribuire a
to put it down to something in Italian is usually "attribuire a", this obviously will have to be adapted to your text.
I agree that more context would be necessary to be sure to translate appropriately.

trarne insegnamento
Or "trarre insegnamento da X". It depends on how you're articulating the sentence it's used in.
Example sentence:
Purtroppo non possiamo fare niente per cambiare ciò che già è stato: possiamo soltanto trarne insegnamento, per non ripetere più gli stessi errori.
Sono convinto che l’importante è non nascondere i propri errori, sperando che nessuno li tiri fuori a tempo debito, e trarne insegnamento.

Servire da lezione
This expression might be a good translation, but again, it much depends on the context.
Discussion
It's impossible to help with no context...
