German term

zentralnervöse Injektion

German to English Medical Psychology psychopharmacology
This phrase is used repeatedly in my article, but it sounds strange to me to leave out the word "system" ("injection into the central nervous system..."). There are very few google hits for the phrase without "system," and most are from non-English-speaking countries.
Is this OK in German but not in English? Is it OK in English, unbeknownst to me?

Thanks!

Discussion

Susan Welsh (asker) Feb 6, 2020:
Where do they inject this stuff? I find "intrathecal injection", which goes into the cerebrospinal fluid, similar to Cilian's proposal. But really, I have no idea where they inject the oxytocin. I was hoping there would be a doctor in our ranks who would know. I hesitate to close the question without a better understanding of the procedure.
Steffen Walter Feb 6, 2020:
Thank you That's no typo, then.
Susan Welsh (asker) Feb 6, 2020:
addendum 2 They're injecting oxytocin. More quotes:

philgoddard Feb 6, 2020:
Steffen I don't think they'd make the same typo multiple times.
I agree that it would be useful to see a couple of examples, but "injection into the central nervous system" seems fine to me.
Steffen Walter Feb 5, 2020:
What ... ... is being injected here? This may be a very long shot since you indicate psychopharmacology as the relevant subfield, but my first thought when reading your term was "zentralvenöse Injektion" (central venous injection). It would be helpful to read the complete German sentence.
Susan Welsh (asker) Feb 5, 2020:
addendum The article also uses the phrase "werden psychische Prozesse zentralnervös gesteuert," which sounds equally strange to me in English -- "central nervously controlled"?? I would say "controlled by the central nervous SYSTEM."

CNS injection (specifically, intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection)

As far as I know, it's ICV, but this is almost an overtranslation. Your text says only "CNS injection".
Note from asker:
I forgot to add: Thanks to everyone!
Peer comment(s):

agree cloudhunter (X) : This is correct. OT is injected intracerebroventricularly.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I am selecting this because one physician and one medical translator think it's right. Of course it's more or less the same as what several others suggested (specifically Cillie Swart), but without "agrees" from others or this level of professional experience. The editor of the journal for which I am translating thought "central nervous injection" was fine, but I'm not convinced."

Maybe that's what it is. Apparently that's often done in the context of experiments with rats and mice...

Does that not do the trick?

On first occurrence, maybe spell it out, i.e. administration/injection to cerebrospinal fluid. After that, cerebrospinal injection may suffice. Unless too specific/restrictive.

No harm in using “central nervous system injection”, but in the context, “central nervous system” is understood.

“The central actions of oxytocin are mediated via oxytocin receptors (OTRs) distributed widely in the brain in a remarkably species‐specific fashion.”

“ Another study employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to detect the locations of oxytocin‐responding brain regions ...
In this report the authors tried to visualize oxytocin‐responding regions following the central injection of oxytocin into lactating rats (compared with noninjected control animals).“
