I was trying to actually be closer to the original

and to find a good way to translate «идут». I am trying to keep the style of the speech as the author clearly prefers идут to ставятся, показываются и т.п. I think “running” is a great suggestion. No?
If we describe and render the meaning what is in the context by using stage (verb) or perform, it means that you are only giving information about the fact that it is being performed by Soviet and foreign actors, or it is being staged. (this is informative and literal at the same time). But 'stage' as a noun has broader meaning. To be on at Soviet stages not only means information, it also might mean that is welcomed by Soviet and Foreign audiences, but it does not mean it is already popular among them. And we can't say it is popular with audiences as well (as the Misha mentioned), If we say so, it would be conclusion.
Staged has the nuance of preparations to put on a play.
Staging is the process of selecting, designing, adapting to, or modifying the performance space for a play or film. This includes the use or absence of stagecraft elements as well as the structure of the stage and its components. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staging_(theatre,_film,_televi...
In the centuries that followed, Shakespeare's plays have been performed in England, North America, and around the world, in productions that mirror the state of theater in each place and time: from lavish scenes, to surrealism, to stark bare stages.
Theater performance excludes the interpretation of "theater" as a "movie theater"

His plays are popular with audiences in the Soviet Union and beyond/abroad
Explanation: Never mind those stages. It is never a good idea to translate an idiom or set phrase, such as this one, verbatim. This is not engineering or clinical trials. What matters in a text like this is that the meaning be clear and that the text read as if it had been written in the target language. IMHO, this approach applies even if the original text is, well, not of a stellar quality (which, unfortunately, is often the case). In the end, the objective is to make a better product rather than the most minutely accurate translation.
