Si estamos hablando de un regimen democrático, la frase en español "perpetuarse en el poder" significa básicamente que un presidente toma medidas para ser reelegido o bien para evitar un golpe de estado. Todo depende del contexto. "Remain in power" es la opción menos riesgosa de las anteriores, pero los mandatos presidenciales tienen una duración determinada, y no hay nada que puedan hacer para "perpetuarse en el poder", literalmente.

Quizás me excedí un poco con la explicación. Disculpen :)
