Spanish term

vías de socialización

Spanish to English Social Sciences Psychology
This is from a paper on emotional intelligence, which is partly in Spanish (to translate) and partly in English (to proofread)

En especial, el contexto familiar es dónde los niños parecen forjar su base de conocimiento emocional (Mayer & Salovey, 1997) a través de dos vías de socialización (Matthews, Zeidner & Roberts, 2002; Zeidner et al., 2003):
a) Direct effect route: parents transmit emotional abilities to their children explicitly through explicit or informal lessons, conversations on emotional regulation, direct training, coaching, guidance, or reinforcement of expressive behaviour.

The part in English suggests vías is "routes" but there are very few hits for "socialisation routes" or "routes of ..." so I am not really convinced especially since "vías de ..." seems to be fairly common in Spanish.

Any help greatly appreciated.

My worry here was that there might be, as Simon says, an accepted psychological term but perhaps I'm over-analysing ....
Simon Bruni Mar 11, 2013:
Agree with Phil I would say it's not so much an accepted psychological term but more just an everyday usage of the word 'vía'. I have suggested 'means' simply because it's more common in English, but route, channel, path etc. would do.
philgoddard Mar 11, 2013:
I don't think the number of Google hits is particularly relevant - via means route or path, and they've actually suggested route in English.

I would say so - it's not like a route/path that anyone can choose, but is generally an ongoing process.
Note from asker:
This is what I've been thinking of. I would then change the messy "direct effect route" to "direct process"

means of socialisation

From the Oxford Spanish:

2 (medio, procedimiento): lo hizo por una vía poco ortodoxa he did it in a rather unorthodox way o manner; por la vía diplomática/política through diplomatic/political channels; por la vía de la violencia by using violence, by using violent methods o means
