The term comes from a Rabbinic Derashah in Mishnah Masekhet Berakhot 30 on Shir HaShirim 4:4. The term originally meant a stepped tower (Migdal Babui BeLifufim o BeMadregot). See Even Shoshan's Millon Hadash under Talpiyot and tbelow that (Tel) Talpiyot.

disagree Eynati : Hardly trips off the tongue as a translation. Masekhet Brakhot & Even Shoshan give the English as 'a central important location'? LOL.
