Board of Scientific Investigations

I would translate it as follows:

Superior Board of Scientific Investigations (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, C.S.I.C)

Consejo - Board, Coucil, Commission, Committee.

the (Spanish) National Department for Scientific Research

y justo seguido entre paréntesis pones las siglas originales: (CSIC). Así, la información es lo más completa posible.:)

CSIC

Most definitely, as Agua suggests, leave it as it is.

To avoid unwieldy writing out the original and translating the term what you could is paraphrase the function of SCIC in the sentence, refer to CSIC, and in parentheses put its full title in Spanish.

e.g.

'...the rearch was carried out under the auspices of the Spanish scientific research organisation, the CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas), and was....'

Note that the title is very transparent so there's no need to labour the point by giving its full name in Spanish, then a translation, which could be inappropriate anyway. (CSIC probably have an 'official' English version of their name, and you run the risk of getting up someone's nose!)
