ethnicity

Explanation:
Are you still working on texts on Mexico? It is common to refer to a person's community in sense of being their ethnicity of origin since ethnic groups have such strong regional identities. Whether you use community or ethnicity may depend on whether "community" will be understood in this sense by your readers.

I don't believe it is referring to "community" in the sense of being the place where someone lives. "Communities" of Mexicans have diasporic qualities because of Mexican migration to the US--someone can be a member of say, a Mixtec transnational community.

Asker:

Asker: I am indeed still working on the same (rather long) Mexico text - sorry for not mentioning it earlier. I think I agree with you in that it is not a geographical reference.

origin

Explanation:
Another solution. Besides, in a list like this, it is normally stated the word origin, to stress any background other than religious, sexual etc.
