Since the vessels or cups were actually used to drink the substance, I cannot figure out what "fingiendo" means in this context. TIA!

Yes, I see your dilemma! I wonder could it mean that they concealed the fact that they were taking these substances by drinking them from the vessels in question (which were normally used for some other drink ... )??

Estoy adivinando, lo único que se me ocurre, es que usaban esos vasos para esconder o disimular que es lo que en realidad bebían, ¿puede ser? A ver si alguien más enterado te ayuda.
