It is a standing joke among men cruising girls (and possibly the reverse, for all I know) that a bird who is too ugly to cruise at the beginning of the evening becomes increasingly more attractive the more you drink, until by the end of the evening you take her home.
I apologize for this coarse and extremely sexist explanation, but I'm trying to convey soemthing of the distasteful register of the remark; I hope I don't need to say that I do NOT personally subscribe to or endorse this viewpoint!
One famous wit is quoted as having said, in reference to the fin-de-siècle Paris demi-monde: "Absinthe makes the tart grow fonder"
