Dutch term

papil (pupil?)

Dutch to English Medical Medical (general) Ophthalmology
In een rapport van een oogarts over een patient met bloeding in het oog staat: "OS geen ischemie, enkele collateralen op papil". Ik ben vrij zeker dat dit "pupil" moet zijn, maar zou het toch graag even van een ander horen.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 the papilla (optical disc)
5 +4 papilla (plural: papillae)

Tina Vonhof (X) (asker) Dec 12, 2006:
If you propose this as an answer, I'll accept it (your link does not work but I found another one).
Kate Hudson (X) Dec 12, 2006:
The appearance of the optic disc, called the papilla, tells the physician whether there is a problem in the eye or not. Papilledema is an acute emergency

the papilla (optical disc)

The optic nerve forms the whitish/yellow knob that the physician sees through the ophthalmoscope or the slit lamp at the back of the eye. Physicians call it the "optic disc" or in Latin the "papilla".

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks very much Kate. You put me on the right track - I even found a few documents where both optic disc and papilla were used with the same meaning."

Actually, I was set off on the wrong foot, as I thought these were papillae, but on closer inspection, in the adsence of any more context, I found that this is the macula (gele vlek):

Thanks for taking the time to send me a note, Tina It was confusing, but at least you got the right answer, eventually; which is more important than getting KudoZ!
Note from asker:
Re first half of your answer: this is what I had found myself but felt it didn't fit in the context. Re note added: could be but I wasn't convinced because none of those references use the term papilla. Nevertheless, many thanks, I appreciate your time and effort to try and help me.

agree jarry (X) : from the French "papille": Petite éminence à la surface du derme ou d'une muqueuse qui correspond à une terminaison vasculaire ou nerveuse (Papilles gustatives). Marijke, you can safely omit the "sir" bit, certainly considering our past encounters.
