Problems with punctuation

English Other Other
I think that in the following sentence a comma should be put either before or after 'service', I do not know where exactly. Does it make more sense to put it before or after 'service'? What do you think?

Sentence:

“As many as 20 makers of 802.11 chips are rushing devices to market as new classes of systems makers and service companies pursue fresh opportunities delivering industrial-strength wireless LANs for businesses and a rising army of public-access ‘hot spots’.”

Thanks in advence.

Now I see that there shouldn't be any comma here, because 'systems makers and service companies' makes perfect sense to me. I was a little hasty in posting this question.
Marie-Hélène Hayles Nov 8, 2007:
You could put a comma after "market", but it's not strictly necessary. You definitely shouldn't put one before or after "service".
DarekS (asker) Nov 8, 2007:
I think now that a comma really isn't necessary here.

I see a couple other problem here:
(1) It should be "system makers";
(2) I'm not sure it's appropriate to call a multitude of "hot spots" "an army".
As for punctuation, I'd stick a comma before "as"

agree Deborah Workman : Yes, to all, though I wouldn't put a comma before "as". Re: the army, one could have an army of hot-spot service providers.

Thanks, Deborah! I would. Otherwise it could be confused for "devices as new classes". Army of providers, yes; army hot-spots, no, in my opinion.
agree Richard Benham : Comma after "as" is strictly optional. I agree on "system makers", although it's ""systems programmers". A comma either before or after "sevice" would make nonsense of the whole sentence. "Army" is wrong and "rising" inappropriate. Rising tide? Welter?

Thanks, Richard! Sure, it's optional. I say "I'd stick" and I would, if only to avoid confusion w/"devices as new classes". Yes, "systems programmers". I used to be one, as well as a "systems designer" at one point.
