Dutch term

rondemiss

Non-PRO Dutch to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation

Discussion

Interlingo BV (asker) Dec 3, 2008:
I decided to go with 'podium girl' as 'tour hostess' is more linked to the tour de france, and this is a smaller race. Thanks for all the input!
Interlingo BV (asker) Dec 3, 2008:
A rondemiss is the person who hands out the prize to the winner of a cycling race. She also wears clothing provided by the sponsor and she is in the picture that is taken of the winner. So her main task is to promote the brand of the sponsor.
Ken Cox Dec 3, 2008:
oops, that should read 'such as there are'. Competive cycling is not a particularly popular sport in English-speaking countries.
Ken Cox Dec 3, 2008:
or 'Nergens zijn de hakken van een ronde miss [sic] zo stiletto als in de Giro d' Italia.' Are they even part of cycling prizes (such are there are) in English-speaking countries? And then you need some thing equally colloquial, not the 'official name'...
Interlingo BV (asker) Dec 3, 2008:
De context geeft niet veel verduidelijking, maar dit zijn de zinnen waarin de term voorkomt: " Dit jaar worden de rondemissen gekleed door modezaak.....". "De rondemiss dit jaar is Chantal ...."
Chris Hopley Dec 3, 2008:
Please post context, e.g. at least one sentence in which your term occurs.

tour babe, tour girl

Cf. pit babe, grid girl in motorsport and ring girl in boxing.

"Podium girl" seems to be more common:

-> "Covering Le Tour is no easy-peasy - the days are long, transfers are far, dinner comes after 10PM, and of course this is France… But who's complaining when you get to spend time with the Podium Girls of Le Tour"

-> "It may not be your typical podium girl, but Tim Johnson gets a kiss for his efforts nonetheless."

neutral writeaway : a tad sexist imo /babe in particular

what is? // "Slang. A young woman.", "A person regarded as physically attractive: beauty, belle", so hardly discriminatory in an offensive sense. Where I come from, incidentally, it's a term of endearment used for either sex, akin to 'darling'.

tour hostess

Part of that quartet is 22-year-old Alice Carlier, in her second year as a Tour "hostess", as they are known.

She told the BBC Sport website: "It got a little boring kissing Lance Armstrong every day last time and it's already getting boring this year".
