Geographically, "vorderes" seems to be "northern". FWIW
writeaway Mar 1, 2009:
are you sure it has to be translated?

upper Ötztal Valley

The Ötztal valley is comprised of five municipalities (from north to south): Sautens, Oetz, Umhausen, Längenfeld and Sölden. The main industry in the valley is tourism: the mountains around the Ötztal valley are popular with mountaineers and skiers. There are ski resorts in the upper part of the valley at Sölden, Hochsölden, and Hochgurgl.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "In future translations I will use your idea of northern and southern, I had thought about this myself...but then in the rush of thing and with a non-collaborating CAT tool... Kim, the Wiki ref you gave has the word "quaint" I am sure that's the translation of "urwüchsig" or something like that in German -- to me it has a rather negative connotation though and don't know if it would be best translation here..."

Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : no one would be able to find that on a map. (see their own map: MORE DETAILS Download Resort Information vorderes Ötztal (pdf) ). When I proofread this sort of unclear indication, I usually put it back to the German original.

Nonetheless I hold a different view. Allthemore so because Ötz is also a place name, so everybody will find also the valley on the map
neutral Helen Shiner : With rivers one usually speaks of 'upper' and 'lower', i.e. whichever is nearer the source - upper being nearer. Ötztal I would leave in German.

sorry, but I dont agree with leaving the term untranslated, i.e. Ötztal instead of Ötz valley. In most cases, there appears the proper name and the word valley, are translated, just let me quote the Engadine valley.

Ötztal is not translated. If you want to add a sub-region, then you can add "Northern". . . (see Vinzenz)

agree Helen Shiner : or even upper?

agree Kim Metzger : I'm convinced vorderes is northern and hinteres is southern in this case. http://www.feuerwehrverband-tirol.at/pages/Bewerbe/technisch...
