I know this is some kind of tree, but can't find its English equivalent in Ragazzini or anywhere else. Does anyone have a more sophisticated dictionary?

Assuming that you need the translation into English ;-), here's what I found. There are different kinds of "carpino", a common one being "carpinus betulus" > "European or common hornbeam". Another one is "Ostrya carpinifolia"; the common English name for this one is "Hop hornbeam". If your text does not ask for too much detail, I would simply translate it as "hornbeam"

Grazie Maurizio, anche per la precisazione sulla pronuncia (non si sa mai)!
