Among coloring methods, there is ‘solid painting’ in which color is applied evenly over the entire area, and ‘blurred painting’ in which it is blurred in areas away from the body. The blurred painting method is done with the light source in mind as shown below. Apply the color of the garment lightly on the side near the light source as the
actual color in the center, and lighter again on the opposite side, while adding subtle shading at the end.

Explanation:
Aus der Überschrift Modeillustration schließe ich, dass es sich um eine Anleitung für Modezeichner handelt. Bemalt wird also wohl nicht der Stoff, worauf auch hindeutet, dass von einer Beachtung der Lichtquelle gesprochen wird.
Ist das Original in Englisch? Der letzte Satz scheint mir nicht ganz verständlich, meinem Gefühl nach müsste es etwa so heißen:
Apply the color of the garment on the side near the light source lighter than the actual color in the center...
