Slight differences in diction and meaning
All the answers so far mean roughly the same thing and are good English, but they differ in the level of diction. "Perform" is generic and good for written/formal speech. On the other hand "do the trick" and "do the job" are more colloquial (i.e. something you would hear in speech). There's also a slight difference between the last two : "do the trick" means "fulfilled some expected task" (one time) whereas "do the job" means "performs as expected over some period of time". If I use peanut butter to remove chewing gum from the carpet, I would say "that did the trick". I don't think you could say "do the trick" for diapers, but you could say "those new Pampers really do a good job keeping Junior dry".
